I don't understand why y'all always use the word gifted, you think they were just born with it? What you don't see is the insane amount of hours they poured into honing their art

If anyone who put in the hours could be a Tatum or Bechet, well we'd have 100s of thousands of them running around. He's referring to the bit that goes beyond the effort - that considerable time has been committed to the craft is obvious to even a small child. But working hard isn't the part that really, deeply impresses us is it? Millions of musicians work hard. For some, there is an inexplicable part that cannot be accounted for that puts a musician at the next level, that rare echelon of the top 1%. And in that sense it is said to be 'given', aka gifted. By God or otherwise. That's not to say someone couldn't arrive via brute force (say, Coltrane who tirelessly practiced the basics as well as constantly addressing his weaknesses), but many of those that 'make it' have what can only be described as a 'gift'. Hope that makes sense.
