Imagine it is 1977 and you’re listening to this song for the very first time... It must have been overwhelming. 43 (!!!) years later this masterpiece is still breathtaking. One of my all time favourites.

Oh It was overwhelming. I bought the 45 of IFL as soon as I heard it on the radio and was dancing to it at the disco when the song was at the top of the charts in 1977. Everyone would jump on the dance floor when it came on. No one had ever heard anything quite like it. Definitely a musical game changer.

I remember very well, when I first heard this track on the radio. I was already a Donna Summer Enthusiast by the time but when I Feel Love came up as a "Neuvorstellung" New Entry into the German charts, I was in a trance. It totally blew my mind. I was in a cheer natural HIGH. And hearing this from my favourite singer was just awesome!!!

I am so glad that Donna Summer is finally getting reactions from reviewers. For those who don't know, Donna Summer sold more Disco records than any other female artist in the Disco Era. She was second only to the Bee Gees in record sales, the biggest act ever in disco, but Donna was close on their heels! A man named Georgio Moroder did all of the music for Donna and they collaborated on the songwriting as well. Georgio was at the forefront of synthesized music starting in the early 70's and had a minor hit with a song called Baby Blue. But he stopped touring because it was difficult to tour with these high tech, bulky - second generation synthesizers and he also had to take electronic technicians with him on tour in case one of the synths broke down. You couldn't just go to the radio shack and get a new one! They weren't available for sale to the general public at that time. So he quit touring and began looking for other artists to collaborate with. It was Georgio who ran across Donna Summer and the rest is history. In case you haven't heard, much of the disco music that was released as singles were shortened versions of a much longer musical track. For example, Donna Summer's Love To Love You Baby is almost 17 minutes long on the album but the single consisted of the last three minutes of the album version. This was common during the Disco Era. The longer versions of most disco hits can be found by typing the phrase Disco Purrfection (spelled correctly) Version after the artist and song. If you type in Disco Purrfection Version on it's own, it will give you a huge list of suggestions to pick from. These extended versions first began in the 1960's. The earliest example I can find is by Martha & The Vandellas/Dancing In The Streets (1964) and listed as Soul Purrfection Version. Then another is the Archies/Sugar Sugar (1969) listed as Bubblegum Purrfection Version. There are also two other categories called Funky Purrfection Version and just simply Purrfection Version, which was reserved for pop songs after Disco died. An example is The Police/Every Breath You Take which has an extra set of lyrics not included on the single or the album versions. These extended versions were sold on 12 inch "singles" that usually played at the same RPM's as a regular long play album but certain 12 inch "singles" we're also made that played at 45 RPM's just like a 7" single 45. Donna Summer with the musical backing of Georgio Moroder had many #1 and top 10 hits and in the early 80's had hits that were more pop oriented Like Cold Love and The Wanderer. Some of their #1 hits are - MacArthur Park, Hot Stuff and Bad Girls. Donna had become so popular by the late 70's that Barbra Streisand teamed up with her for a #1 hit called (No More Tears) Enough Is Enough. You have opened a big can of worms with Donna Summer - with Big Fat Ones in it!

You sell Donna short, Donna was pop music first female mega star. She was the first female to dominate the Billboard charts. She was first black artist and first female artist to bring 3 albums to the top of the charts consecutively. She sold over 20 million albums and had 10 gold singles(1 million) 2 platinum singles (2 million), and the first gold maxi-single, in the US market at the end of the 70s. She was the first female artist to repeat having the #1 single and #1 album on the pop charts simultaneously ( 3 times in 8 months). She was the most commercially successful female artist of the 70s. Being a top 10 artist on the worldwide pop charts for 4 consecutive years 76,77, 78 & 79. She was the first female to scored 3 #1 singles, and 5 top 10s and /or 5 top 5 singles in a calendar year (79) Billboard. She had 9 consecutive top 5 singles that sold over 1 millions copies or better, a physical sales record. She kicked the door down for artist to build careers on dance music, especially females. Named the Diva De Tutti Dive, by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the first true diva of the modern pop era.

Donna Summer is NOT all about disco!! In fact she didn’t like singing them and she was trying to steer away from it but Casablanca Records is steering her back to it. Yes, it made her famous but she wrote some great ballads and she can really belt out. Check out the ballads on the Bad Girls album such as On My Honor, There Will Always Be A You, All Through The Night, and My Baby Understands…all written or co-written by her!!! Neil Bogart of Casablanca Records didn’t like the Bad Girls album because the album didn’t sound like disco and more of rock. She and Bogart had a falling out after this. She moved to Geffen Records and Mercury Records and recorded more pop/rock albums. She made hits afterwards, such as Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger), She Works Hard For The Money and the under rated State Of Independence. She made more hits during the Casablanca era, I agree, but my point is she’s not only all about disco! She’s way more talented than that!!! Watch her live performance on 1999’s VH-1 Live and More Encore. Highlights for me were Someone To Watch Over Me, Nobody, Riding Through The Storm and If There Is Music There!

I was dancing to “I feel love” when it was first released in 1977. We had never heard anything quite like it and yes, it was the birth of electronic music as we know it today. But there are a few other Donna Summer songs that were in a way, follow ups to “I Feel Love”. Several months later after Donna and Giorgio Moroder releases “I feel Love”, Donna’s next album also in fall 1977, included yet another 2 electronic masterpieces back to back called “Now I Need you” and “Working the Midnight shift”. “Now I need you” is such a trance hypnotic song that it must be played with headphones to hear every single synthesizer layer on it and Donna’s voice is haunting to say the least. Seamlessly “Now I Need You” merges into “Working the Midnight Shift” (Donna’s original ode to working girls, not “Bad Girls”) and we are taken on yet another synthesizer masterpiece while Donna delivers melancholic lyrics about working the streets at night. I urge all of you electronic music lovers to give Donna Summer’s “Now I Need you” and “Working the Midnight Shirt” a listen and keep in mind these were recorded in 1977.

I Feel Love - Changed the course of music history. It is in the Library of Congress because it was an enormous influence on music & and therefore our culture, and is considered an important song in our history. This song is still sampled and borrowed from and influences music around the world... still. This song came before Sylvester. Deborah Harry of Blondie LOVED Donna Summer and said Donna Summer was one of her favorite singers that she listens too. Debbie Harry loved this song and told her band that she wanted a song like I Feel Love... the result was Blondie's song HEART OF GLASS. The music of this song has enough going on, which is why Donna sings in her "upper register" and doesn't try to compete with the music - the vocals and the music compliment each other and are one. Donna recorded this song in one take, but ALL of the backup vocals are also Donna Summer, and Keith Forsey played the kick drum, but other than that, it is all electronic. This was far different from anything "disco" at the time too. Donna's music was more "Eurodisco" and had more of an edge and later had more of a "rock" feel such as Hot Stuff (which has a great electric guitar solo) and Bad Girls (the entire Bad Girls album, actually). It was Brian Eno who worked with Bowie who told Bowie about the song and said, "I have heard the sound of the future".

Fantastic reaction, Dereck! Thank you so much. It was actually quite moving to see you enjoy the song so much. I Feel Love is a masterpiece really. It's hypnotic. When you listen to it, you don't want it to end. And when it does, you want to hear it again. It's a song you never get tired of. A characteristic of a truly exceptional record that has stood the test of time. It was also the first song with a backing track created (almost) completely by a synthesizer, a kick drum being the only other instrument on the recording, apart from Donna's voice of course. Groundbreaking. Apart from that, Donna Summer is an incredibly talented singer. She could sing anything with ease, mostly in one take. That's how she recorded her vocal for I Feel Love as well, in one perfect take. You should check out her other songs as well, like her incredible powerhouse performance on MacArthur Park, preferably the full 18-minute long MacArthur Park Suite. Breathtaking!

Donna was TRULY amazing and ahead of her time with this dance music. A little history that I read on this song is that the instrumental was recorded first and Donna came in and wrote the lyrics in about 10-15 mins. She then recorded ALL the back up vocals before recording her main vocal. She did it all in one take too! She was truly an amazing singer as she would often record her songs in one take. It's sad to hear the rumors about her supposed comments on the gay community STILL follow her in death. Being a HUGE Donna fan, I've read several things about it and watched some interviews with her denying these comments. I think it was the New York Post or something like that that tried to reach out to anyone who could back these claims of her alleged remarks, there was not ONE person to confirm these. Even asking about the remarks she supposedly made at her concerts, not ONE person came forward to support this. She had many gay friends in school and throughout her career, even being a big supporter of Elton John's AIDS Foundation. I don't believe the accusations myself. If I did, I wouldn't be such a strong fan. In all the interviews I've seen her in, including comments made by other celebrities, she never appeared to be anything but a loving and not judging kind of person.

I first heard it when I was on summer holidays and although being gay and even then it was disco I wasn’t into disco more Bowie, Queen etc. But Donner just blew my mind, I couldn’t stop dancing to it and had to buy it. It got to No 1 here in the U.K. and rightly so just fantastic an amazing song. As you say 5 minutes long so was fairly new too have a long disco song last that long. I beg you please listen to 1982s version from Patrick Cowley’s 15 minute disc, wow simply wow didn’t think this song could be improved but it was and was played all spring/summer in the large gay clubs. There’s plenty of remixes of “I Feel Love” all of them unique but as a teenager in 1977 this song had a huge impact on my gay life. Thank you for playing and your reaction to it priceless mate just priceless.

And you can thank this song and Giorgio for what we listen to these days in the Dance Genre. This song can be played still in any club and still sound fresh. From the concept album "I remember Yesterday" as this song presented us with what the future of music was supposed to sound like... Well, all I gotta say THANK YOU DONNA AND GIORGIO

There was nothing like this before this 1977 sound on your headphones like you said. Otherworldly at age 17. I can relate to what you are experiencing with the musical layering. The 80's Disco/Dance movement was so revolutionary that 'some people' hated and reviled it. Yes, those same people and off spring who act that way today. Donna was amazing. Follow her discography! Great Reaction. Keep it up D!

Yep, way ahead of its time just as youve stayed. I Feel Love’s fingerprints can be felt on pop to this day. You should check out the Patrick Crowley mix which was the version that was used in the disco’s when released. I realize it is nearly 16 minutes long but it uses the album version with added synths, reverb, blips and beeps. It will take you to another planet entirely.

Love your reaction. I was 15 years old sitting in my grandmother's car when this came on the radio and my reaction was the same as yours. I could not believe what I was hearing. And just FYI those are ALL her vocals the only ones reportedly that were in the studio was her and Giorgio. Take a listen to the original full studio version. In the full studio version you can hear her vocals layered as each verse goes on and by the third verse you hear three different levels of her voice. I also suggest MacArthur Park if you don't have time to listen to the whole Suite look at the live video clip on RU-vid. Thank you so much your reaction.

Her follow up album after I Remember Yesterday in 1977 was 1977 Once Upon A Time, its great and has some great synthesize tracks like Now I Need You and Working the Midnight shift. Its a great double album. Giorgio moroder was the man behind her creating those great tracks for Donna. Listen to his solo work during that era like the Chase all instrumental track. Donna made some great dance floor hits in the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s.

I was 9 years old when my dad gave me that cassette when we went to Miami in September 1977 and it was the first cassette I ever owned. I adored Donna Summer, she was the most beautiful singer I listened to and that song above all was a hit, it was heard everywhere. All the music was obtained through synth boxes and sound effects, something totally innovative at that time, making the sound totally different from anything heard at the time and was very different from the rest of the songs on that LP (which It was traditional disco music, with violins and orchestral arrangements). Besides, the melody was catchy and the rhythm made you dance all at once. A few years later in Venezuela I bought the album of their greatest hits, but the North American version had a very different intro than the version published in my country. Even today, that song is heard today. It has not aged with time.

You cannot believe how very very different this sounded in 1977 compared to everything else. As an 11 year old at the time it expressed feelings and emotions I did not have words for. This track definitely confirmed I was not like other boys 🤩.

There are songs released over the last 50 years that truly are 'landmark' moments in pop - and this is one such song. Absolutely amazing, ground breaking, and no one had heard anything like it before it came out. It basically led to disco. But it somehow manages to blend industrial synth with street dance music. It's just perfection. A one-off track which once you hear you never forget it.
