I love this lady!! Her music has meant everything to me in my coming out years! Her powerhouse voice is truly missed. I know you're in heaven Donna. Just know that all of your fans love and miss you. Sincerely, Billy C.
Many thanks for getting that recorded and sharing it with us. Wonderful that Bruce shared a bit of their personal and professional life together in his speech and brought a lot of sincerity to it. You can tell he misses her deeply and knows her fans do too.
I know the purists will hate me for this, but Donna Summer was one of the only Dance/Disco artists who made a conscious effort to incorporate rock riffs and hooks into her work. She LOVED rock and roll. So, despite the naysayers, I truly believe she deserves her place in the RRHOF.
Best concert I ever went and saw in my life was donna summer donna rocked that stage will never forget that fun times at those concerts ravinia festival and star rock
they waited too too long for that induction. I wish she had been alive to receive it. she rose & shined in a genre of music where no one could top her. yes, she belongs in there folks. GO DONNA!!!
Donna got a bad riff because of the title bestowed on her and if anyone REALLY listened to her ALBUMS, not her hits, they would see she did NOT just do Dance/Disco, in fact she was a Pop Artist but she did Pop, Rock, Electronica, R&B, Disco, Country and Dance, except for maybe her 1st 3 or 4 albums, all her recordings after, consisted of the various genres... this is ONE woman, a Black woman who did it all greatly, to make her the best among some of the rest. So she definitely deserved this win, in a time in the 70's when not many star lining solo female acts were writing or co-writing , she did on all her hits and album cuts. Her music, paved the way for other artist after her, as many paved the way for her before..So for those who gave thumbs down, I guarantee they know nothing about her except "Disco Queen"...lol..
Mike, clearly you have no concept of what criteria a RnRHoF recipient should have. First and foremost, RnR should not be pigeon holed into just Rock. You should be an innovator, and cross genres. Give I Feel Love a listen again, and see how Donna makes her VOICE an instrument to the arrangement. You also, clearly, are not a fan of Donna Summer and ONLY know her as a DISCO queen. If you were a fan you would be aware that her library crosses MANY genres of music. Once again, that should be the first criteria of a RnRHoF recipient! Not some formulaic repetitive hit machine. Were you even aware that she won the FIRST female vocal RnR Grammy?!? She beat out PAT BENATAR. Now that says something to me. We know what a legend Benatar is, and what a voice she has (I’m a huge fan of hers too)! That alone gives her an induction! Bruce Springsteen wrote a song for her too (Protection: give it a listen). She was the first to inspire the “all star choir” (Band Aid / We Are The World), with State of Independence. So you see the RnRHoF, fortunately, is not judged by narrow minded, color blinded, and possibly gender biased MEN like yourself. If that’s the case, and we confined our nominees to RnR ONLY artists then we would have to eliminate jazz, blues, and reggae artists that have been nominated thru the years. We would loose A LOT of artists that have influenced RnR over the decades. RnR is NOT just a screeching guitar. It’s not James Taylor to Judas Priest. It’s everything in between, and everything before and after! And personally, I think that Donna is a way bigger ROCKER than James Taylor! If you disagree, then you need to listen to Hot Stuff a couple more times!
