It's excellent music, and reminds me of Lukas Foss's String Quartet no. 3.

Thanks for sharing this. Searched for this composer after listening to the podcast; so glad it brought me here first. Incredible!

This is incredible. Heard it for the first time on Nadia Sirota's podcast and have come back here repeatedly for this performance. Thanks!

What I enjoy most is the ability to sing along...there's nothing like a great melody.

@@joelster7455 You know as well as I that when you get old you want a tune and some warm harmonies to go with it. We did enough angry music when we were younger

@@stephenjablonsky1941 Haha well I'm only in my 30s so wouldn't call myself old just yet but when I am I hope I can still enjoy a range of music. I wouldn't call this music angry at all. Energetic, dramatic, driving - and just plain fun! - but not angry.

@@joelster7455 I just tuned 79 so I've heard more music than you and seen many styles come and go. Let's talk again when you are my age. ^ _ ^

@@stephenjablonsky1941 What about this music is angry? If you're talking about the emotion that's being expressed, then I can see what you're talking about, but that'd be quite inaccurate wouldn't it? Beyond the seemingly nervous surface this is a very meditative piece about gradual growth, it's very gamelan-esque in a way. If you're talking about it's lack of melody or odd harmonies, then that's even more inaccurate. Music that's angry because of it's place in culture needs to have an objective, usually the musical tradition, something to revel against, something to avoid. But this piece is full of consonant harmonies and traditional ideas, unlike something like, say, total serialism, which is an 'angry' system that seeks to eliminate any conventionalism from the music. This, to me, seems like a look inward into the very fabric of music: Harmonics, not as a response to anything in particular. That doesn't mean that you're wrong or that you're a sallower person for disliking this. You actually seem to be incredibly knowledgeable from what I've read from you in other comment sections. If after all you've listened you still decide that your taste is on the more conventional world of consonance and hummable melodies, then all the power to you! I whish I had my priorities as clear as you. I'd still recommend you to keep your ears wide open, even at your old age, and to understand that maybe other people hear something that you don't, and that it doesn't have to do with young angst or anger. Greetings from Spain!

The title of this work should be 'How to Induce a Splitting Headache'. A truly terrible piece of music.

Missing the point. I love all the little details that are there but so easy to find yourself tuning out. I love the play with tuning systems and the 'inaudible' ascent of the violin part towards the end. And I love the constant sense of motion and that all three players are basically hammering away for over 10 mins...maybe a bit of a joke on Donnacha's part?

I got here from the composers setting of He Wishes His Beloved Were Dead, which is beautiful. I don't get the point of this at all. But kudos to the performers for keeping the energy up.
