In real life he was closer to Sonny Black, he said a couple of times if I wasn't an agent I could see myself hanging out with Sonny, not being involved in crime, but having beer or having dinner with him. He thought Lefty was a pain in the ass, but at the same time, realizing that Lefty knew the life. Joe said that Lefty was an expert in mob politics. He said anything that Lefty said was going to happen did happen pretty much like he said. No one was smarter then him when it came to the mob.

@@MJoy4Fun What gets me at the end is how the mobsters didn't believe he was undercover, even with the official word on the fact. He was that good -- and likeable.

It is his greatest performance for my money. He was able to tone down his usual bravado and confidence. The thick glasses and the follower mentality. It's all new turf for Pacino, but he pulled it off beautifully. Your heart breaks for this mass murderer by the end

In real life it was “Sonny Black” , Dominick Napolitano who was murdered for bringing in Joe Pistone aka Donnie Brasco in to La Cosa Nostra. This hurt the Bonnano family for a long time. The family almost made an undercover fed. After it came out that Donnie was really a federal agent, Sonny was eventually called for and he knew he wasn’t coming out alive so he gave his jewelry to his favorite bartender who worked in the bar he lived upstairs from. He also gave him keys to the apartment so his pigeons could be cared for. He was driven to a house where “the meeting” was to be held in the basement. Sonny was pushed down the stairs and grazed by a bullet. Sonny then told them “Hit me one more time and make it good..” He was then shot several more times killing him.

If Im correct, the real Lefty was picked up by the FBI before making his destination for his "sit down" saving his life. Far as Sonny Black, I believe his right hand was missing when they'd found him, a message was sent how that was the same hand that shook Pistone's.

In a weird way it ended up kind of benefitting the Bonnanos, because they got kicked off the Commission and barred from deals with other families right before the era of RICO prosecutions cranked up. The other families got hammered while the Bonnanos flew under the radar setting the stage for their resurgence under Joe Massino.

One of the few movies that depicts Italian mobsters in the right way: not funny people with despicable habits, not tragical anti-heroes, but a bunch of paranoid sociopaths that don't trust anybody and care only about themselves.

I think he showed he could act, way before this film. "Edward Scissorhands" in 1990, "Benny & Joon", "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" both in 1993, "Ed Wood", "Don Juan DeMarco" both in 1995. All before this film in 1997.

Lefty's final scene where he removes all his valuables is heartbreaking. Very difficult to feel that way for a character who you know is a ruthless murderer.

Pacino plays that scene masterfully as he does in every scene of this movie. What a performance. Even just that shot of him watching the nature show on TV is incredible, how he's sitting. What a controlled, disciplined, crafted performance; absolutely no hint of the normal "Pacino In The 90s", chewing up the scenery, hollering and yelling.....his best performance of the 90s, bar none. I put this as his best post-70s performance, actually!

Real life Sonny Black and Bruno Indelicato were part of the hit team on Carmine Galante. After the hit, both of them were made capos. Unfortunately for Bruno, his dad, Sonny Red wanted to overthrow Phillip Rastelli, the boss of the bonnanos. Eventually, Sonny Black lured Sonny Red, Domminik Trinchera and another caporegime in a trap and did the infamous "3 capos murder". After this, the FBI had enough evidence to endite them all but Sonny Red and Tony Mirra were whaked for bringing in Brasco/Pistone.

I am so glad more and more reactors are starting to react to this film. It is definitely a wonderful well-made movie. I will say, though, you can rest assured, in reality Lefty did not actually die. It was Sonny Black who paid the price for Donnie’s infiltration and who got killed. Actually did those same exact actions that Al Pacino did with leaving his ring, his money and his keys, except he gave them to a bartender leave them in a drawer in his house. Lefty was apprehended on his way to a meeting, which was presumably his own hit. But the FBI intercepted him before he could make it, and he spent the rest of his life in jail.

When I was a kid I grew up around people like this and I was good friends with two rival drug dealers and they use to tell on each other to the cops every chance they could. It was insane.

In real life it was Sonny who told his girlfriend if you talk to Donnie tell him " Im glad it was him and he was better than us".. also Lefty (Al Pacino) was picked up on his way to the meeting he would be killed at by the FBI and refused to talk and went to jail and was released cause he had cancer. ..and Sonny was really killed by his family

The book this is based on is one of the most fascinating non-fiction thrillers I've ever read. This is a pretty good adaptation except that the scenes with his wife drag things down for me.

Great movie. But Lefty isn't the one who got whacked. Hollywood changed that part. Lefty went to prison. It was Sonny Black who ended up geting whacked for vouching for Donnie.

At last!!! Thank you! 25:41 Marion blew me away with that remark, I never thought of that: both Pacino and Johnny Depp are in the same exact situation. Great reaction! Well worth the wait! Obviously The Godfather Parts 1 & 2 and Goodfellas (and Casino) are the undisputed greats of the mafia movies.....but after that, "Donnie Brasco" is next on my list. It's not as cinematically impressive as those other films, but it definitely has the acting, the script and a fascinating, compelling story. Probably my favorite Johnny Depp performance (along with Ed Wood), and my favorite 90s Pacino performance, bar none.

The real life story of Joe Pistone and his undercover work is insane and Hollywood could have never written a bigger story. Pistons single handedly brought down almost an entire family, and he was actually submitted to be made guy meaning to be mad a boss and they were going to open the books to him which would have been an epic unfolding of the criminal underworld of the MOB both operationally and symbolically but the FBI finally pulled him out when that came about out of fear he was in too deep and that his cover would finally get blown. Pistons had some of the biggest pair of bal*s never to do what he did for as long as he did.

Great movie. I liked this so much I saw it multiple times in the theater. I think Lefty was actually arrested on his way to meeting that would most likely have been the death of him. He died in prison.

Depp is absolutely chilling. That scene at the dinner when he asks about the "secret family recipe" -- and when he is told it he "threatens" the guy. Depp is absolutely astonishing in "Black Mass". "The Departed" is a joke in comparison with "Donnie Brasco" and "Black Mass".

"The Departed" is a REMAKE of a Hong Kong movie, mixed with a mishmash of "Whitey" Bulger history. Vastly superior is not only "Donnie Brasco" but also even more so "Black Mass," about Bulger's ACTUAL history, also with amazing Johnny Depp.
