i think with older asian millenials (late 20s-early 30s) especially from california, we grew up in ethnic enclaves. where im from, it was mostly asian, black, hispanic, and the trailer trash/hood whites. in these ethnic-specific communities, we were able to develop a sense of pride without even being aware of race in a deeper sense. if you grow up in an asian community for example, you dont "see" asian guys or asian girls, you just "see" regular guys and girls because you're used to be part of the majority. so when some non-asian person calls us a "ch*nk" or something, we dont get offended, we just say some shit back because we dont have a "minority mentality." we dont get as pumped up about representation either because we've been representing ourselves and the community we live in has been representing us for our entire lives. on the other side, if someone grew up in ohio or missouri or some shit, they have a "minority mentality" and are hyper aware of their race but dont have much pride. they have an "asian trauma" because they live in non-asian dominated communities (usually white) that bully them on the daily. so whenever there's good asian issues, they go super hard on it but whenever theres bad asian issues, they get very sensitive to it. which is why they're more likely to talk mad shit about white people because they live in racist white communities. also, because of how big the topic of race is now, us older asian millenials are getting pulled into re-examining who we are as asian without the trauma of actually being asian. but for those that are younger millenials and gen z (early 20s-teens), they didnt have as much of a foundation or community in the way that we did because we hung out at the park on bikes and fighting with other kids and shit. whereas younger people only have online spaces now. they dont get the same foundation that we did back then so when someone tries to come up on them, they dont know how to react. in my opinon, i do think younger asian people and a lot of asian people in general need to toughen up and shit talk back to non-asians or not be so sensitive about every little thing but at the same time, i can understand where they're coming from because of how different they grew up and where they grew up.
