O'Malley claims that every woman he's ever spoken to has had a purely self-serving interest in the infantry.
"I want a chance, I want equality, I want better job outlook." But not one woman has ever said, 'I want to make us better at hunting and killing other men.'
O'Malley says that while there are women who can do it, the inclusion of women in the infantry will not make our Marines and soldiers better at hunting and killing other men.
What else matters more than combat effectiveness?
If the study proved that women make infantry units less effective, why are they there?
Does the inclusion of women in the infantry make us better at fighting wars?
Let's allow that question guide our decision.
When asked if his views were a little primitive and outdated he responded with, "war is the most primitive scene of humanity, and always will be. So it's ok to have stances and attitudes that are primitive."

Yes. I don't understand this mindset. I'm a woman and I know my limitations. I could train and become the most fit and strong version of myself and still not be truly qualified to be a combat soldier, firefighter, or police officer. I can't take down men. Men...my human counterpart...the people with significantly more muscle mass and bone density. What are these women trying to prove? I swear I don't get it

Frank N'Beans Military in general should have high PT standards (if for no other reason to have cheaper medical care and less chance of breaking down physically) Combat MOS', however should be even higher

Not exactly. There are some nations that have woman on the first line that had to pass the same tests than the man ( with a man standard, not a lowered standard] and they're as good as any other man. The key is the training. In fact, for example, the best sniper in the Spanish army is a woman, the only woman that had passed the Special Forces school in the Spanish Army.

leah hugie Yes but you must remember it’s not powerlifting, 30 pound vest, 80 pound ruck and 7 pound rifle. You have to be able carry said weight for at least 17 miles in a single day for multiple days on end. Marines and Soldiers endurance is incredible. Also note they will also take the occasional getting shot at.

CR7NEYMAR I used to fully agree with that statement, but then I realized that I can kinda see why there are some alterations to the physical fitness expectations. I have seen a lot of women shorter than me, I think I’m around 5’9 or so, and if they had to carry 60+ pounds, I can kinda see how that would be pretty difficult. I agree that most of the physical tests should be mostly equal to men, even doing full pull-ups, but I do also see some limiting factors. Also, I just wanna throw it out there, I think that they should also have their heads fully shaved for basic training. If men are forced to have their heads shaved, at least have that for the women as well. To the women that already shave their heads, nice!! 👍

Dexter Schray I NEVER SAID THAT. I said that I can see why they have lower physical requirements due to some limiting factors such as their height. Imagine a short woman trying to reach a pull up bar and do a full pull-up or carry 60+ pounds. My point with the shaved heads was that if men are gonna be forced to get their heads shaved, they should do that as well for women. That is something that can be easily done for both sides. Next time, try to actually read the comment.

Thats because the cops are told to take the guy. I called the cops on a girl once. They were reluctant to take her, were trying to find every reason to let her go but I had to many witnesses. My platoon in the 82nd Airborne division was always male only. Then, they started letting women in. They were not strong enough to carry the equipment we did and the men had to end up carrying what the women could not. I personally was on a mission with a female who was 5'4" and maybe 150 lbs. At 5'11" and 205, I ended up carrying all the heavy equipment including basic camo nets and poles to camouflage our vehicle. She worked hard but was physically incapable of doing the same things. After the mission she got an award for outstanding service in the field. I got nothing. I did the majority of the work and she got an award. Typical of this type of bullshit.

Sorry to hear brother.I am here in the 10th mountain!. Same thing. Even when they make it through the same process, they are just not as strong as the men . This is what I have been trying to tell everyone. The loads,distances just get higher and longer. I am 5'11 and 155 pounds. These women can't keep up with the men.They are shorter so they end up slowing us down and they don't have the endurance and the strength from what I have seen. They put in effort , no doubt about that brother!. But this is a difference in the design of the body and nothing can change that. Contrary to popular belief it is always army and marine infantry units that do the most difficult and physically demanding tasks out there. Not special ops lol! They shouldn't be in combat arms

Everyone else in this comment section is acting like the Military is the adult version of boy scouts, and thus should only be reserved for men. Of course women can join it, but they have to be judged equally to men if they actually want to pass training. Don't put your own soldiers at risk just because you want to make it easier for women to pass training, and to be politically correct. Political correctness has no place in any army. No matter the country.

Standards are just the first hurdle to get past. Even after that you still have to weigh whether it's worth it to integrate the sexes in combat roles. Men are gonna react differently to the sight of a woman injured than another man. It's just biology. Can't get rid of it, nor should we. It's a useful evolutionary trait. So even if we never lower physical standards for women (it will never happen), it is still problematic to integrate women into the infantry.

Our defense policies isn't based on catering to the tiny minority that might be able to hack it. Our legal system is based "we'd rather let guilty people go free than to wrongly convict someone innocent". It works because it is in line with our value of individual liberty. The criminal who got off will likely offend again, and get convicted then. So it's a self correcting system to a certain extent. Whereas the innocent man wrongfully convicted will lose valuable years of his time that he can never recover. When it comes to the matter of protecting our nation, it does not work in accordance to the principle of individual liberty. Nor can it, if you want a competent fighting force. Doesn't it seem ironic to you that we are supposed to defend our capitalistic society which prizes individual liberties and egalitarianism using the tool of the military (which is in its nature a socialistic and authoritarian organization)? This is because there is a difference between the kind of society we'd like to build and live in (civilian) and the kind of society that is effective at killing other people (military). If you've never thought of it like that, I'd say that your views of what is good and fair in a society, and what kind of values should be a priority in a given environment is short sighted and skewed. Not trying to put you on blast, just wanted to explain it fully and clearly.

Gino C I know most females won't make the training and I do think the requirements should not be lowered for females it should be the same for both genders. But what if a female and yes it would be rare does finish training and meets the same requirements for men? I understand what you're saying and I absolutely respect what your saying, and I'm not saying your opinion is wrong and I'm not saying you have to agree. It's just NOT ALL will be like like what people are assuming and I recognize their concerns. But that doesn't mean I can't try to train like hell too and make it. Is it likely no but I'm still gonna train by myself before I try to join and if I can't meet the the same requirements as men by the end and I don't think I can train any further then I'm not even gonna go to a bootcamp.

You know, as (female) paramedic, in the state I moved to, we had to be dual certified as a firefighter and paramedic. Well, I went through the fire academy and passed by the skin of my teeth. And, never once in my career fought a fire. I am an excellent paramedic and would be a rotten firefighter. Just because I Can, doesn't mean I Should.

32 year Army vet - 21 of them flying Apache helicopters. I was an Apache driver before AND after women were allowed to occupy the busiest COCKpit in the free world. Are there women who can do the job? Sure - but they are the exception, NOT the rule. As a matter of fact, the standards for successfully getting through flight school were changed at the same time this anomaly manifested its ugly head. And statistically, those who were successful is APPALLING - we are spending millions of dollars getting women through Ft Rucker IOT validate some warped social experiment and the end is still the same - a WEAKER Army. There are only two VALID questions when it comes to women in combat roles: do they make us a stronger fighting force AND are we short of able bodied young MEN? Sorry, SJW's the answer is and has ALWAYS been an emphatic NO!!!

The AVERAGE civilian male is not capable of surviving in the military, but the average is CLOSER to being capable than the AVERAGE female IS. My original point was that, yes, the AVERAGE civlian female is DEFINITELY not capable of military service, but that's also true, although to a lesser extent, for civilian males. The military is about EXCEPTIONS to the average for BOTH genders. So why make it impossible for exceptional above average females to join if the military is ALREADY about exceptional above average males joining in the first place? Hopefully you understand my point now.

This Marine is absolutely correct! In my combat experience as a Marine In Fallujah I witnessed first hand , well trained male Marines become utterly useless!!! Iv always said to those that ask “what is it like” I put it simply, no one knows what kind of person they really are until you are shot at or start seeing bad shit happen. You want to know the measure of a man? You will only see it in raw first person combat!! Most average men couldn’t deal with it let alone females and even trained females. A small percentage? Yes. But as a unit and real lives at risk? I say keep them out

10 year Infantry vet here and I can only speak of my personal experience with female soldiers. We had 3 females attached to my company in support roles. One of them was a medic with my platoon. As a Grenadier and a team leader I carried about 80 lbs of gear at any given time and she carried a medical pack that was just over 70 lbs. I never once heard her complain about how hard anything was. She kept up with us and when we got in the shit she was right there with us return fire and doing her job. She was awarded several accommodations for her actions and it was not a token award she very much earned them. All and all she was an excellent soldiers IMO. That being said the other two females almost immediately got pregnant by sleeping with officer's in their chain of command (one of whom was married to someone eles) and not only effectively removing themselves from the combat zone but made huge disruptions in the logistics of our chain of command. Im torn....... It's not a black and white issue at all. Lots of grey.

11 year Marine infantry officer here. I don’t give a shit about the less than 1% that can physically handle it and that may perform well. The infantry is a brotherhood. A “he-man woman hating club.” A treehouse where only boys are allowed. It has to be. Women in the mix will always disrupt that shit. Think of the unit cohesion that was absolutely destroyed by those two females. It’s not the politicians or the feminists that are going to have to deal with that shit. It’s the officers, SNCOs and NCOs. If you want to create all female units, go right ahead. But integration will never work. I was in the front of a bus when my Marines were talking about one of the Marines “banging a fat chick” over the weekend. They were laughing and joking and you know, MALE BONDING. Now imagine if a female were there with a chip on her shoulder and decided to claim sexual harassment. What do you think that would do to unit cohesion? Keep in mind, we served in Iraq and Afghanistan against a far inferior enemy. Now imagine what Marines past had to go through in Iwo Jima, Frozen Chosin, etc. In the words of General Robert Barrow, 3 war veteran and more combat experience than the entire modern military leadership, “women in combat will do to the Marine Corps what no enemy has been able to do in over 200 years. It will destroy it.”

Women often work attached to infantry units in roles such as dog handlers,medics, radio operators, intelligence analysts and so on. But the contributor has a point when he says wars are humanity at it's most primitive. The enemy doesn't care about gender when it sees a uniform, male or female a bullet comes flying. If women want real equality, then they must accept the risks of being in combat without complaint.

Women tend to want to get emotional and what happens if their time of the month comes around... a hormonal woman with an AR15 in harsh conditions under fire? Men have higher levels of hormones that promote muscle gross and fat loss, (probably not you because you're clearly a soyboy) and their natural limits for muscle growth are higher. Also, being able to push a baby out of you wouldn't exactly help in combat. Fyi, women may have higher pain tolerance but are more likely to die from a gunshot wound.

There have also been women in ranger school that have met the exact same standard as men. 3 women to be exact, and by all accounts outperforming many of their male peers. SPC Monica Brown, who was awarded the Silver Star for running through enemy small arms and mortar fire to protect and treat wounded infantrymen, SGT Leigh Hester, also awarded the Silver Star, who personally led an assault to clear enemy positions during an ambush in Iraq resulting in 27 enemy KIA. I challenge you dumbasses to justify why these Silver Star winners should be excluded from serving in combat, given that they already have proven courageous and competent under fire. I love how the US is the only country that has a problem with women serving in combat. Canada, Israel, Germany, Australia and Norway have women in the infantry. Have there been any problems with their combat effectiveness? None. Because if there were, they would have changed their policies immediately. As a matter of fact, it's been shown that women have superior discipline, motivation and marksmanship. If a woman with exceptional abilities and toughness can meet and even exceed the standards currently set for male troops, there is absolutely no excuse to deny her the job.

There are plenty of women throughout history who have made and it and excelled in combat. However, those are almost entirely in times when they were given little option. With the draft, or total war, you get people in combat who are from all walks of life. The good the bad. Since there are more good people than bad generally in the world, you get a better standard of man at the expense of a better soldier. Having no draft, you get those who want to fight and kill. The standard of man changes.

The military should NOT have to adjust itself to females being in combat and infantry roles. The females are the ones who should have to do the adjusting and if the can not adjust themselves good enough to do the same job as a man then the females do not belong there. I personally do not believe females belong in infantry/combat roles because they might be able to pass a one time fitness test but the day in day out grueling, physical requirements of these roles will proved too much for the female body, it will break down sooner, more easier than the males.

as a combat veteran myself & fighting along side women. I would say women have no place in combat, zero in fact they shouldn't be in the same country a conflict is happening. downrange they are the number cause for sexual assaults & guys for some reason want sex, so rapes & assaults happen. & in combat I personal had to carry there equipment along with my own. then we had to slow the mission progress due to the fact that one had there period. so that HvT escaped when we were literally about 2 capture them.. so my brothers in arms died 4 no reason during that operation. war is not for women, and it's not for men either tbh.. these are a few examples just a few

Yea, this guys words hit. I was a volunteer fireman. The firewomen made excellent leaders at times, but not a single one could effectively haul their buddy out of the burn building, perform forcible entry under a minute without assistance, or properly take the weight of the hose when I was on the nozzle. I was 145 pounds when I started in fire. My assigned partner in Fire 1 was 250 pounds, 300 pounds with full gear. FDNY had no mercy on me during RIT drills when I had to find my buddy in a blacked out mask, tools, full gear, and half his weight. They shouted and screamed at me to drag his ass out and I did it. The two girls in class tried their damndest but took an eternity to get their partners, both around their own weight class, out the door. And the instructors didn't yell, they just said good job. Sorry. But this ain't a participation sport. You can't do the job, you shouldn't get the cert.

In the 1960's I served 10 years in the Royal Marines. I joined before my 17th birthday. With the benefit of hindsight I realised that there was one element of my young life that I needed more than anything. That was the comradeship that other Marines can give you. Nowadays it is known as 'male bonding'. I don't know of any other job or career that can give you that comradeship like military service can. Would it work the same if your recruit training squad comprised say, 30% women? Probably not. Here in the U.K. for the first time, women are now able to apply to serve in the S.A.S. the S.B.S. and the Royal Marines. I shall be watching with interest to see how it works out.

I once fought in a mercenary group in Syria, and there was one woman in my platoon. She was as tough as a rusty nail. She was shot three times in one year, and always made it back to the front line. Does she have my respect? Yes. Did I want her beside me on the front line? No. This isn't World War 2. We are blessed to have special military equipment and technology, and her putting all of our lives at risk for her own personal satisfaction isn't helping us. When she gets shot, we are required both by morals, and by code to go retrieve her. She fell in hot enemy fire, and now all of us have to rush into that same hot enemy fire. She was slower, weaker, and more uncoordinated than all of us.

I still blame the males, especially the barracks' boys who feel special. I find it's usually the ones who've never seen combat and will later claim PTSD for playing "Call of Duty" for three years. They made us feel like we weren't soldiers, so we wanted to be in combat so that we felt better. I even went through this but stayed in support roles. After you've been on the ward or in the graveyard, you expand past yourself. Due to soldier worship, many have big egos and think that they matter more than everyone else.

Damn shame they lowered the standards so women can be in the infantry. I was just in the signal Corp and knew I couldn't do all that infantry stuff. I was scoring 270-280 on my PT test at 6'00" tall 160-180 pounds. I was in good shape.

The reality is that when a man gets captured he goes through hell. Now when woman get captured it's beyond hell in every way for them. No one would wish this on their family as in mum, sister or girlfriend. Saying that as a ex Grunt I do everything in my power to protect anyone overseas but in combat roles on front line if a woman goes down then every single male on the battlefield go to help because let's face it guys we don't want to see anyone in that situation. When this happens you lose the mission. We are here to protect people and we care about people that much we don't want to see woman suffer as we do. They will one day or already do have children of there own so we are just trying to protect them from suffering as some of us do.

The standards have been lowered for women. Co-ed units have been proven ineffective. All male units surpass co-ed units by far. Women handicap the unit in many ways.

Females can do stuff that most males cant like tank operator or pilots (height average)and they are just as important ... I feel like we need to implement females I the military the right way. And if females meet the standard in infantry than so be it.

I wholeheartedly agree with him. Women, even in peak physical condition cannot keep up with men in peak physical condition. To incorporate women into a platoon is to make that platoon less effective, and render the women as the weakest link. While women may execute other functions well, strength and endurance are paramount.

I think women should be allowed in combat if they are in their own platoon and are able to carry each other, there's no way a woman's going to drag a man off the Battlefield who is wounded..
