First minute, kinda crazy. Like, you know “what extends the lives of people who would have otherwise died?”.. continuous advances in medicine and technology. So incredibly coincidental that right when brain death became a thing, there was a huge demand for organs viable for transplant…
And just wondering, so is the hypothalamus considered part of the brain? Cause if it is, lots of murder going on in hospitals if “whole brain death” is required in the U.S. But, what does it matter if hospitals are making money, and surgeons are getting paid thousands of dollars per surgery, and also get more experience in surgeries?.. I admires donors, but the whole process and lack of public debate on the ethics as well as lack of stringent data about outcomes for “brain dead” people is even discussed. 4:50 that’s a pretty big asterisk. “CORRECTLY DIAGNOSED” well, according to recent (unknown if you’re not looking for them) studies-a majority of hospitals in the U.S. don’t actually follow the recommended guidelines (this isn’t conjecture, there’s data in peer reviewed papers from the last decade that reflects this)-plus if you decline organ donation then the machines sustaining you are turned off in all but two states.. so we just see the occasional but very real cases of people “waking up from brain death, when their organs are about to be procured”. Buuuut it’s just attributed to “not following the proper guidelines and procedures”.. kay.. well most hospitals don’t though? These few were just the lucky ones who happened to regain consciousness within 24-48 hours while OPOs were doing all their tests.. Idk. I think organ donation is an amazing gift, but I think if the public was aware of these realities and some I didn’t even mention… people would be pissed and rates would go way down. But how ethical is lying by omission? We need synthetic organs at this point. But harvesting from people who have a low chance at recovering and may always need support is probably cheaper to the government and insurance companies than developing synthetic organs along with supporting people who may or may not ever recover…..
So theres obviously a couple of glaring issue with this. The first is making the ridged defintion of brain death " IRREVERSABLE ceasation of all brain, and brain stem function" The reason this is a problem is by including "irreversable" in the defintion you are creating a false certianty where none may actually reside in the reality of things. What i mean by that is you can have a patient who exhibits a state identicle to brain death in all examinable ways for a period of time, only to recover from it, and for neurological function to continue on. And despite the state they recovered from essentially being brain death, they are not classified as a brain death patient, but a trauma, or coma patient, all because "irrevesable" is the qualifier for brain death diagnosis. This is why at the end of the video they can say with confidence that nobody who has been correctly diagnosed with brain death has ever recovered. Well duh. If by the defintion of the diagnosis they can't ever recover, then ofcourse everyone ever "correctly" diagnosed with it, indeed never recovered. This is a game of words, and defintions being played, and should have no place in the medical field.
Oh certainly not! You know doctors are there to help people not harm! The organ procurement companies make a million off of one persons so they have enough money already and as you know like any billion dollar corporations they get really nice & never need more 🤭😉
