@@americanpig-dog7051 This isn’t the sport for you if you think that way. In a sport that is this globalized supporting more than one national team is pretty commonly accepted. Mexico fans are also huge Brazil fans and tend to root for them or other “American” countries like Colombia when their teams gets knocked out of international competition. So them cheering for the US should be no surprise, especially bc a lot of them are literally dual nationals, or have family that are full on American citizens. In fact USMNT fans are some of the biggest two team fans in the world bc a lot of Americans are descendants of European immigrants. US fans love to cheer for Germany, Ireland, England, or Italy bc that’s where their great great grandparents were from 😂.

@@americanpig-dog7051 There’s inconsistency in your logic. You just agreed that Americans have second teams, so why aren’t non Americans allowed to root for the USMNT as a second team? Are Americans the only human beings allowed to root for second national teams? It’s ironic because the USMNT could use all the help it can get in terms of attention and fans. A lot of Americans don’t even care about the sport, and some actually shame people that follow it. It’s unwise to turn away the people that help give a little extra relevance to the national team. It seems like you are advocating for less support of your own national team and have a preference for lower attendance and reduced relevance on the international stage. Fans from other countries like Brazil, Mexico, Japan, or Morocco for example in the last World Cup, love getting support from foreign fans who show appreciation and love for their football. They understand and love the sport, and embrace multiculturalism. People like you are proof that a lot of Americans still have no idea what this sport is all about.

@@luisrg6544 It irks me when someone leaves a country they don't even want to live in and show more loyalty to that country than the one they actually want to live in, like the Turks living in Germany who make German home games against Turkey look like away games. Nobody's saying you can't root for any other team, but I grew up watching US-Mexico games with people who were born and raised here and hated the US and were loyal to Mexico. Then again, my people can create societies that people actually want to live in, so maybe that's why I don't get it.

He may not articulate himself in the best way but that doesn’t mean his point in principle isn’t accurate. There was definitely a “mercenary” feel during the Jurgen era where you just knew some of the players coming were purely taking advantage of a career opportunity and wouldn’t have cared whose colors they were doing it in. Especially over more deserving players. Nobody is saying dual nationals or mixed cultures are bad. It’s just being obtuse to try to make it one or the other. You absolutely understand what he’s saying if you watched the team for any amount of time in that era.
@JC_2311

and the fact is Landon basically hinted that those players made it known during camp how they felt about the opportunity. If they had performed then it wouldn't have mattered, but they evidently didn't which leads to Donovan feeling he was "right" to question their effort which is what he was doing.

regarding the “my other team is mexico” thing, i’ve always believed that you should root for your rivals. when you aren’t playing them. or root for the team who knocks you out in a tournament. cuz you want to be going against the best. so if i’m messi, and barcelona and real madrid are on opposite sides of the champions league bracket, i root for real madrid the whole tournament so that we can meet our rivals in the finals, and beat them. if i’m costa rica in the 2014 world cup, after losing to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals, i root for them in their next games. because if i’m going to be beaten, i want it to be by the ones who win it all.

@terrancehall9762 I kinda understand what you mean, in that, how can Landon know that someone like Julian Green or Aaron Johansson were going to flop massively before they got a chance to prove themselves on a big stage? Just keep in mind that he never said he should be the one to make those decisions, he merely pointed out that some other players that have ties or opportunities with other national teams may not care as much as someone that leads his country with over 50 goals, and the most assists in international football history. I didn't get the impression that he was saying he knew he was right the whole time. To me, it sounded like his hunch ended up coming true later, which led to him feeling vindicated for his initial response. He also specifically pointed out how Jermaine Jones was not an example of what he was trying to say and that there are multiple exceptions. People are just looking to be offended and make a mountain out of a molehill. This isn't a sports TV analyst that never played a match or represented his country, it's Landon Donovan. Kate Abdo really got on my nerves when she was pressing Donovan on his comment that some of the Germans that Klinsmann had recruited for the USMNT clearly didn't really care about their "American heritage". Other than Jermaine Jones, it was obvious that these other "ringers" didn't really care. So it varies from individual to individual, some people feel a connection to a country that they weren't born in but that one of their parents is from, and some don't, and you can tell by their actions, how they talk, etc. At the same time, I will say that Landon doesn't seem to have the emotional intelligence to make it very very very clear, with emphasis, exactly what he was saying. He wasn't saying that it's impossible for someone who is a dual national to serve on the national team on another country, and do so honorably and authentically. He wasn't saying that. He's saying that one or two or three specific individuals who Klinsmann recruited gave him (Donovan) the impression that they didn't really care about the USMNT or America and they didn't care to try and integrate themselves into the team and really try and be "American". This should not offend anyone.

I find it so funny that Landon is so ahead of the rest of them yet to me it feels like (especially Kate by assuming he „just likes to be different“. I found that a bit childish and bit of a disgrace towards this legend.) they are unwilling to grasp what he‘s trying to state in terms of no borders and that we are all just human beings. If you take turkish soccer (I‘m turkish) as an example. I will support teams like Israel or Azerbaijan or any other closer country if we‘re not making it bc I consider them close to myself and it sheds a good light on that area in terms of soccer and attention for it’s sports. You as well can‘t deny that Mexico is also a big part of the US and it‘s culture/economy etc. So there clearly is a link that‘s not only based on rivalery. And also on club level. I support Besiktas Istanbul but will be super happy whenever a turkish team is successfull in the Champions League. And ironically, I will support Galatasaray at the Champions League but I‘m going to hate them so hard and want them to be crushed in the league. So it is, like he said, an ambivalence between realism and idealism. We love our nationalteam, I support other nations that I consider close to myself and my identity. Tho at the same time I believe that we deep down are basically all the same human beings, which isn‘t that hard to understand. In the end it is all about swinging between those feelings and trying to find a place comfortable in that limbo.

Landon’s opinion on attitudes and agendas of certain specific dual nats may get criticism, but he is consistent. He doesn’t want a player to come in and only be about themself. Like when David Beckham joined the Galaxy, he went off on loan to AC Milan just months after arriving. LD called him out publicly for only being about himself and not being loyal to the Galaxy. That said, the USMNT really really needed LD in 2014.

It’s crazy to act like what Landon said about some of those folks was at all controversial. It’s not about being a dual national or an immigrant or anything. It’s about some folks being committed to the national team and caring and others just doing it wholly for themselves. It’s not that complicated. When folks say “how can you tell???” they’re being disingenuous. It was obvious for some

Agreed! 100%! To have to explain such a simple comment (and it is simple), is silly. Kate was trying to make something out of it, but it’s nothing. Some people naturalize, and it means more to them than other people who’ve naturalized.

also its not talked about but he had arguably world class vision and soccer IQ. his long passing was off the charts. he wasn't the best dribbler, but that's ok. but his vision and soccer iq....check out his assist highlight reel. not just his set piece delivery, but passes IN a game. early on he had a no-look one touch assist with the outside of his foot in the assist video. Against china I believe. It was mind blowing.

Jermaine Jones played all games for the *German National Team* at youth level. He later changed to the USMNT. Following Donovan’s mantra he isn’t "American enough" to play for the USofA, oh wait, because he "delivered" it was acceptable. Donovan is confusing Jermaine's aggressiveness with effort. Jermaine was known all over the World for that attitude at club level, so fully matching the American poster child of a warrior. So no big deal that Jermaine wasn’t constantly waving the US flag. Got it. To the contrary Julian Green (at that time was barely 19yrs of age and playing for Bayern München), a guy with potential, who had to prove himself and Jürgen Klinsmann that a mix of "native" (and therefore being blessed to be more patriotic) Americans and Dual-Nationals would help the team until the MLS will provide several layers of homegrown talent (hasn’t Julian shot a goal in the 107th minute for the USMNT in his first game at the World Cup?). And yes, you’ll find a bunch of 100% patriotic American players who will fail to have multiple calls in the future, simply for the reason that someone else will be better, bc of injuries, etc pp…

I've seen the two parts of this interview & you can kind of tell why LD was left out of the team in 2014. He never was the guy to reach to other players in camp. I'm actually stunt that he never made a relationship with Clint Dempsey. They were arguably the two best players for that era! I enjoyed LD in the 2002 WC, but with time Clint represented the real US essence of the team. With LD it always felt like he left so much to desire with his career & I feel like he does feel the same way. Nonetheless, he did deserve a spot in 2014 regardless if he was fit or not.

Kate nailed it right on that archaic American discourse of 'not feeling/being American enough'. Americans always are: 'half Italian 3/4's German, 1/64 African, etc...' but when someone else, outside of the country, truly is a double or triple national, then they are not 'American enough'. I have a total respect and admiration for Landon Donovan, and recognize the huge impact he's had on football's development in the US, but he won't sit at the same table as Clint, Maurice, Bocanegra, Tim Ream. Yes, Klinsman favoured 'German-Americans', but Landon's comments are simply out of touch.

I agree that we are a country of many origins and immigrants, that actually is fine, because many of them would absolutely represent this nation with all of their heart.
