My hunting and scouting a year combine 12 ish days a year. I do one trip a year back home to Michigan to see my friends and family… and hunt. But my success rate last few years is 100x what it used to be. I have been blessed with getting multiple deer a year last few years when my success used to be a deer a year if I was lucky. Some years two some none. And now I’m getting 2-6 deer a year. And the years I have gotten 2, it’s because I have passed tons others. Since I have gone mobile and worked on my woodsmanship, my success rate has gone through the rough. I missed opportunities each of the last two years at 130plus size bucks. So definitely getting better and I put some work in when I’m up there hunting. And it pays off.

@@SamkoTradBow when Michigan banned baiting I really dove in to learn what I can about deer. I’m always trying to learn something new about the behavior of deer and I try to look at what I see in the woods to try and break down what I have learned to try and make a “guess” at what I’m looking at. My success has gone up 10 fold and I’m starting to not only get on bucks, but I’m passing and seeing more deer than ever. And I’m not stuck or limited to just one or two trees.

I used to leave work at 4:30pm in the early 1980’s at Coolidge an 8 mile rd and be in a stand by 6:30pm in Fowlerville. Shot a lot of bucks like that. But by 1995 I’d leave work at 4:30pm and I wouldn’t even be to Novi by 6pm because traffic got so heavy with everyone moving out to Howell Brighton area by late 80’s. Guys need to know that big bucks are the ultimate survivors. You cant expect bucks like this to walk up to a treestand and lick your boots on your schedule. If you are going to work, work to create the lifestyle you want. Otherwise, just accept you cant succeed in the woods like those who put in the time, effort and sacrifice. Its your choice.....no one else's. You don't have any difficulties that others do not face in other ways. Just be realistic. If you choose to spend time with your family, then do it with all your might. If you choose to work long hours, then do it with all your might. There is time to be a father, husband, worker and all the other stuff and there is time to hunt. The opportunities to create a lifestyle to support your passions are yours. Most people spend their whole lives living up to the expectations of others without consideration of living up to their own expectations. Find a way to make the plan and then work the plan

Work extra during winter and summer to pay and offset time with family and woods during spring and fall. Money helps but I have less then I ever have now at 50yrs old yet I’m happier then I’ve ever been as I’ve made my life simpler. I have to cheap lock ons and sticks on public land that are 10min from work so I tend not to go in mornin* but after work I can slip in and hunt for 25-30min. I work to live but don’t live to work. Good women, kids raised right and you’ll have people in your life that will understand what hunting means to you and what it does for you. The woods are a mental reset for me so without it I’m not the best me!!! My girlfriend of 10yrs and her kids don’t hunt at all but all have been out to set cams and bait the bear baits and for day trips to north country to call some moose in just to see some of what I enjoy. They have no interest in the hunting itself but they luv me and know what it means to me so they come and see me in my church. They also understand that might mean we have to drive an older car or look for sales for new cloths but to have the best me that’s worth it to them.
