I grew up in Dallas & lived there most of my life since the late 70's. I moved to El Paso last year. After about a year & a half living in El Paso there are some aspects of Dallas I miss. Unfortunately, I could no longer stomach paying over $10K in property taxes to stay in my home that I had owned free & clear for over 20 years. People are being gentrified out of their homes. Old homes that had a unique charm are being torn down to build tasteless, soulless McMansions. While I do recognize El paso has a higher property tax rate than Dallas, the lower property values still result in me paying less than half what I was paying in Dallas. I don't miss the humidity, but I do miss access to White Rock Lake which was a gem. I kind of have mix feelings. On one hand Dallas is no longer the Dallas I remember from the 80's when I was growing up. But after living in El Paso maybe people are friendlier in Dallas. Then again, I haven't really met people here yet. Maybe I haven't met the right people. Who knows. El Paso feels more like New Mexico than Texas. At least we don't have severe weather. No tornados. Sometimes I miss having trees for shade. But we do have beautiful views of the Franklin Mountains & other surrounding mountains plus Cloudcroft is only a couple hours drive and is about 30 degrees cooler during the Summer. Dallas will always have a place in my heart. It's just too bad property taxes were allowed to become so untenable for many people. Homes are now way too expensive in Dallas to even consider moving back.

@tritsac Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's clear that Dallas has a special place in your heart, with many good memories. I gre up in Dallas in the 70's as well and it has changed a lot since then! White Rock Lake and the friendly people in Dallas are really special. Moving to a new place can be hard, but it seems like El Paso has a lot to offer. I hope you meet some great people soon and feel more at home. Thanks again for sharing your story. I hope both Dallas and El Paso continue to be special to you!

People move here when they cant find a job elsewhere. It's the bailout city. Dallas gets all the washouts.

@user-rg9xd9mu5r Thanks for sharing your opinion. Dallas does attract a lot of people because it offers many job opportunities and a vibrant community. It's a city where many find new beginnings and chances to grow.

You're right it gets really hot here! Fortunately the winters are pretty mild so we don't have the extreme cold.

@@LifestylesEastofDallasTx Yeah. That too. Had a car totaled in 2012 from the hail. There were no windshields left and dents 1.5" deep all over the body. Back speakers shattered to pieces too. The only good thing was insurance payed more than I spent on the car when I bought it in 2009
