Denise SEVIER-FRIES yep nowadays they are a cabal. The same handful of people write the songs and are seeking a certain look. Technology will fill in the blanks. That’s popular music in this age. That’s not to say there aren’t talented people out there, there are, they just have a harder time breaking through.
@@danapaul3216 so true friend. Good heartfelt singers nowadays are few and far between. Its all about flashing lights pyrotechnics fire and booms . True singers can still be found in the folk and blues songs .. I live in Wyoming now and have for over 30 years , born in the Mississippi delta . Im a white man raised up listening to delta blues and southern bluegrass. I call it my roots my heritage. Lost BB King a few years ago one of the best blues guitarist ever .Brother Ray Charles could send chills down my back once he really got into a song . Georgia on my mind or seven Spanish angels with Willie Nelson. True singers
Actually they did have a type of autotune back then. At least for studio albums. It is a very old trick of studio engineers. They would record multiple vocal tracks and overlap them to smooth out sour notes. It's still done today.
You're absolutely right!! G-Man@ but he's better than that Michael McDonald doesn't only sing!!!!! He paints a masterpiece he doesn't only paint or draw a picture or draw a landsape or paint a landscape. or even still life on a canvas he makes a recipe he cooks something delicious so everybody can hear his beautiful valuable golden pipes he's not only a soul he's an old soul!!!!!!!! This is the time when singing is actually singing there was no garbage crap autotune like today's music today's music is garbage crap and rubbish there's no value in the music it's not valuable there's nobody that sings good in today's era everybody is garbage today believe it or not pepe today Welles some don't use autotune & believe it or not i Do know some of themes anyway cars is also garbage they say that they want to keep you safe but they're all made from plastic back then is pure Steel and there was no plastic involved and also crashes are less common.
I'll never forget listening to Aja by Steely Dan and hearing his voice for the very first time as a backup vocal and I had never heard a voice like that before. You can't mistake it. I was a huge Doobie Brother fan before he joined the band and Minute by Minute came out and every song was a gem. He made the Doobie Brothers even better if that was possible.
Jamel, you're such a beautiful soul. You have to do things the right way and that may not always be what everyone wants but you do it right. Don't stop being you. Ever.
60's, 70's, into the 80's. No way you can discount the 60's for one reason alone, the Beatles. They changed everything. But I agree that the 70's brought us such a variety of great music. It's funny because I pay every month for SiriusXM in my car and 99% of the time, I have it on the 70's channel.
@@abc456f lol hey dont feel funny about listening to the 70ies channel i do same thing .. Dont get much better than John fogerty and CCR jamming while im driving down i80
I listened to this as a young boy in the 70's and just heard this again after more than 40 years....I am blown away how incredible the artistry and beautiful this music is! These guys are fantastic!
I have McDonald, Sting, Lutha, Sade', Boz, and Stevie Nicks on that unique voice list. Steve Perry was on it until the group found a dude that sounds almost just like him.
Michael McDonalds voice is just delicious. He is from an era when all musicians had to know their craft because there was nowhere to hide when performing live, and vocalists existed that could produce such top quality beautiful sounds. We now live in a world where a lot of mediocrity is classed as entertainment and image and deluded egos are rewarded and have become the norm.
As a former bassist, and an "old" guy, I know where Jamel is coming from. With Auto tune, computerized instrumentation that's always "perfect" and quantified drum tracks, I have to borrow a lyric from Rush. "All this machinery playing modern music..."
Being an 80s kid MM was everywhere but JAMEL you sir have made me a fan! This cut is amazing his voice is full of soul! Thanks for giving him your flowers!
@@alphajava761 i agree about fakebook/Facebook i deactivated my Facebook account almost 4 years ago . I dont miss it especially with this an election year . I can imagine the bickering going on ..
Michael McDonal's "Shine Sweet Freedom" from the move "Running Scared" featuring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines, you will LOVE this song and video, tons of fun. 👍😀
@@bradsmack1 Hands down, my favorite Michael McDonald song, written by the late funky brit Rod Temperton. And that video with McDonald, Hines and Crystal in the bar always brings a smile to my face, as they look to be having so much fun.
I know what you mean. Bob Seger said it best. "Today's music ain't got the same soul." Once you get a taste of real honey, the corn syrup you've always known is permanently pushed aside. And you said it. Sink or swim. The rare ones that we didn't like didn't make it. We were filthy rich with good music. Hope your day is blessed man.
Seeing Jeff "Skunk" Baxter work those strings was an added bonus. I was blessed coming of age in the 60s and hearing and seeing all these great groups and performers in the 60s, 70s and 80s.
Michael has such a smooth voice. It's like creamy peanut butter. Jamal I just noticed there is never any negative or ugly comments on your post. 💝 to your followers and posters.
I come here for the music reactions. I stay for the SuperLove!!! Everyone down for music, sharing great, personal stories related to the individual tunes & sharing this young Brother’s musical journey. No political nonsense. No racist bullshit. No ageism. No superiority complexes. No exclusions. A gathering of like-minded little geniuses feeling & sharing one of the greatest things about being alive.....music! Y’all are the best people I have never met in person. I truly have love and respect for each one of you. Health, Happiness & SuperLove to all y’all!
I think today, music executives are more concerned with physical appearance than musical ability. With all the technology, they can make anyone sound good, but they can't make anyone look good. This is also my favorite era of music. It's all so original and authentic. It comes from the heart, not a machine. There a few artists today that transcend, but not many.
Your feeling about today's music is how I feel. I RARELY listen to mainstream. My 23 year old niece wishes she grew up in the 80s for the music. I'd rather listen to anything prior to about 1995 and I'm a very happy woman! Glad you're discovering all the good stuff :)
I always say that I am stuck in a time warp. Sure do not feel bad about that... radio is finally catching up to us, we can listen to the 50s-80s music whenever we want.
Who doesn’t love the Church of Michael McDonald! He is pours his soul into every song he sings. Thanks for playing the live video to witness his keyboard skills. Their sound is tangible!
You so right!! No autotune! 50's, 60's, 70's best music ever! I was lucky enough to grow up to this fantastic music!! Wish I could go back! Music these days is just not the same.
I went to see Doobie Brothers 3 times and just was blown away. I miss my generations music, when no frills and thrills going on stage just performance solid syraight up talent.
Yaaasss!!! Michael Mc!!! Master!!! Doobie Brothers the band on a while. The group itself ona whatsinever ever! I know I had the album. Im a 64 year youngn' black hippy. These songs never die. Never. These guys, Journey, Boston, EWF, Van Halen, The Eagles etc. RAW talent artists and MUSICIANS.
That voice! One of the most unique in history! Anyone can recognize a mile away! The feel of this band was never surpassed. They had a couple incarnations and all good.
I keep thinking "Man, this man has done so many reactions to songs. I know a lot if them have been pulled, but your soul has been so enriched with hearing these. It's a win win situation for you. Thsnk you for making us realize how great our past was!
Wow I am in my 60s when I here youngsters say they like our music from my day we’ll blow me away your the best you and the king boomer love you brother 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🏴🏴🏴
Willie Nelson and Ray Charles seven Spanish angels. 2 of the greatest. Brother Ray could sing with anyone willie did sing with just about everyone those two together wow!! Great song
You can’t go this far down the Doobie Brothers rabbit hole without reacting to the TV Show “What’s Happening” - What's Happening S2 E16 Doobie Or Not Doobie - Its generational time stamp moment that so many of the 45 and older crowd remember.
Jamal Speaking of Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, he has an interesting second career after Doobie Brothers, Jeff does classified work for national security and government. Stuff that are off limits for those who don't have top to ultra top clearances.
So proud of being a kid who grew up in the seventies and eighties and having music like this and similar to this to be the background of the story of My Life. A time when real singers, with real talent were making real music! So glad I was there to see it, listen to it, and experience it firsthand! This type of music has definitely lasted and stood the test of time...and still sound Fantastic... lol! 🤗🎶 With all the music reviews I see younger people, such as yourself doing these days, it gives me hope that future generations will be able to learn again with real music sounds like and to be able to experience it within their own generations music! 🙂
As a 42 year old musician who has spent 25 of them playing guitar and bass and piano and singing (not all at once lol), I applaud you for instantly noticing NO AUTOTUNE! Autotune was created for engineers in the early days of digital recording to help with situations where a track wasn't in tune with another track and no way to re-record. It has been exploited in a way that is as bad as lip-syncing your own concert and passing it off as real (I think brittany did that a few times...a friend of mine overheard miley cirus talking to someone at resturant about how her sound engineer is the best with autotune). Some people are only interested in a show, and its our job (yes OUR job) to keep the masses from being asses. Autotune IS NOT AN INSTRUMENT. Its called CHEATING! Its been awhile since I've felt a positive feeling from people about music. I'll start writing my own again, sometime soon maybe, because....all the haters can suck it.
Loves this version, what an amazing talent, the whole band is awesome. This is Michael earlier years with the band, when he was replacing the original vocal that was ill Tom Johnston. Thank you Jamal I enjoy watching you watching such beautiful music.
I once heard someone say that Michael McDonald has a voice that women want to make love with. He didn’t actually say “make love with”, but you get the idea!
Jamel’s comments are 100% spot on. In the 70’s, many featured recording artists played their own instruments and could sing just as well in a live concert as they did on the record. ( just as M. McDonald did here). So glad that Jamel used the live concert video for this song! Being able to perform at this level required undergoing a ton of musical training, commitment, and thousands of hours of practicing. Much respect to these musicians and singers from a previous era.
Yes some Throwbackness. 🎧🎶. Michael McDonald at the helm. This live version sounds so good. Thanks Jamel. Real talent for real! The sink or swim analogy is perfect
A little Michael trivia. In 1974, McDonald became a member of Steely Dan's touring band, singing lead and backing vocals. He also became one of the many in-studio adjunct members of the band, providing backing vocals on tracks for 1975's Katy Lied. He appeared on subsequent Steely Dan recordings including 1976's The Royal Scam and 1977's Aja. He also played keyboards on some Steely Dan tracks. McDonald continued to provide backing vocals for Steely Dan through their 1980 release, Gaucho. In 2006, he joined Steely Dan on the band's summer tour, both as the opening act and as part of the band.
My favorite song by the Doobies, they are my favorite band still listening in 2024 and I turn 74 this year! Michael McDonald is my favorite male vocalist
My Love’s Leavin’ - breathtaking heartbreak. While You See A Chance (100%, Winwood) - If you’ve heard this song, you’ve watched the sun come up Higher Love - Some Chaka Khan in the background. Takes over the song at the finish.
Yep, Winwood has a GREAT blue eyed smooth soul voice. While You See a Chance, Arc of a Diver, Low Spark etc. And don't forget his great stuff from the Go project with Stomu Yamashta, ie Crossing the Line, Winner/Loser, great progressive rock.
I remember hearing this song around 80/ 81 and right in the middle of the song, it was interrupted by a Sunsweet Prune Juice commercial. It was one of those hysterical moments in history 😂
That intro he plays sounded like the intro to “Minute by Minute”. Auto-tune ruined music. Everybody sounds good using A-tune. Therefore, the music industry didn’t have to find real talent like Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers. That’s why most of today’s popular music sounds like crap.
I love your reference too a old soul.Young people have old souls. They can see things and feel things. U gotta live ur life, no ones going anywhere. Appreciate all the good vibes u spread. And the positivity. Have a great day.
Let's not forget that a lot of these auto tune performers use a ton of backing tracks live as well. Remember when Milli Vanilli was a scandal? By today's standards, that was tame. Business as usual even.
That is why I love Grace Vanderwaal, the 12 year old(Now 16) who won America's Got Talent....she writes her own music and refuses to lip sync or use auto tune....she is special and I hope Jamal will listen to some of her stuff some day. Check out her channel. It has stuff from the AGT show up to her newest....some really good stuff there in her latest EP album ru-vid.com/show-UC2qc1KM4zgRoOpysqVEaNbw
Michael has what you term a year in his voice! Those who do.. like Selena, Angelina Jordan..Whitney ... their voice hits you in that tender spot! So great!!
GOD his voice is SO beautiful!! I can't figure out what makes his voice so unique, but I think it may be because he can somehow sing with power, yet with a breathiness that makes it feel not only srong, but 'warm and fuzzy' at the same time -- Ya know? This may be the first time I've seen him sing live when he was with the Doobies -- He looks younger here than I've ever seen him. Great song too!
Yeah, you know what I have been a Doobies fan for 44 years and I still get that feeling of awe when I listen to them, Michael McDonalds voice is so pure and clean and yes without the auto TUNE involved. Awesome.
This is the music I grew up with!! Amen! Born in 65, so I got to experience the best music from the 50's (from my parents) then 60's-late 80's. Best music ever. Growing up in that era was the best. I wish my grandson was Growing up then!! All of the technology is a bit much. We played outside all day and listened to music at night. Also, great TV on(that your dad chose) Barney Miller, Archie Bunker, Hogan's Heroes, Carol Burnett show, Sonny and Cher show, Laughin...Best years ever!!!!
Yes, we sure miss when talented, actual MUSICIANS made real music. I am so very glad I was in this time. No social media, gross aggressive ads. There were no cell phones at this time it was just absolute pure talent and glorious. Class of '79. It was good🥰
