You were bummed that it ended so soon, but in the day, most songs were about that long, and there was so much good music, we didn;t even think about it. We were spoiled, man. From all the reaction videos I've seen, it's clear - we were given some of the greatest music on the planet, and we didn't even know it.
Michael and Patti Labelle did a duet together called “On My Own” which is absolutely beautiful…I feel you would appreciate it!! Great reaction!! Peace ✌️
this song is about a guy who had it in his head that this girl loved him at one time long ago and she's gonna come back to him. but she never felt that way about him. he's delusional in his thinking remembering something that never was. love the lyrics , so profound. NO Wise man has the power to reason away what seems to be. what a fool believes, he sees.
According to songfacts dot com: "Michael McDonald's concept for the lyric was a scenario where two people meet in a restaurant - two people who had a passionate relationship long ago. To the man, the affair was the best thing in his life; to the woman, it was fun, but it was time to move on. In the conversation, the man makes a complete fool of himself. When the woman excuses herself to leave, he doesn't get the message, believing he still has a shot and that their affair was much more meaningful than it actually was. Love makes a man a fool, and even a wise one can't reason it away."
Michael "McDonald I keep Forgettin",is one of my personal favorites. Also his backup vocals really break through on Steely Dan's "Peg". Love him with Christopher Cross on "Ride Like the Wind".
Harry…..you’re one of the few reactors among many who gives thoughts not only on the music, but your insight on the lyrics, as well. I’m having a great time going through your archive of reactions. This great song deserved the Grammys that it was rewarded.Cheers
Loved these guys in high school then afterwards in 73’ saw them first time. Early 74’ next time. Time has been very good to the Doobies, thank God !!! For the band members who’ve passed on, thank you and thank God for you! Keep rockin!
Harri, the original lead singer, Tom Johnston, was gone. Your boy Michael was his replacement. (Although Tom did return some years later, so they did share time together in the band.) I think the best McDonald-era Doobies' track is, "Takin' It To The Streets", so I recommend that one next. As always, start with the studio version. Then, in a separate reaction down the road (or the next day), react to the song live. There are at least two killer live performances, one from '77, and one from '82...you can't go wrong with either of them. But again, studio first.
@@Fizbin1701 Years of touring played it's toll on Tom Johnston, whose health suffered leading to emergency hospitalization for a bleeding ulcer. Fellow Doobie, Skunk Baxter, having known Michael McDonald from the Steely Dan side, brought in Michael to fill Tom's absence.
@@Fizbin1701 You are correct. McDonald was brought in as temporary, initially to just finish the tour. But with Tom taking a long time for his vocal chords to heal McDonald then stuck around. Tom was never "gone" as the poster states. He was on medical for bleeding ulcer as well.
By the way I am a major Doobie Brothers fan now, and I realized I even was back in the days when their hits around the radio. But I was very young being bored in 1970 and now as I hear their music again it brings back great nostalgia
Thank you. You did actually get most of it right, surprisingly. Nearly all of those doing first reactions to this song didn't even listen to the lyrics or got it completely wrong. I danced to this in 1979. Yes I'm old now but it's still great. Fantastic lyrics, harmonies, melody, beat. It really has everything a good song should have but then on top of that we hear Michael's velvet vocals. I've watched videos of The DB's performing this live on stage and it's just as good as the record. I can't help asking myself how many contemporary groups or artists could actually do that today.
McDonald’s done backup vocals for some of my favorite bands. He’s so amazing because he’s this superstar who’s willing to support & uplift other people’s music. Check out “Ride Like the Wind” by Christopher Cross and “The Best of Me” by Toad the Wet Sprocket.
Your face was priceless! Pure joy and sorrow all within 5 minutes. I've just found your channel and the comments seem to have you up to date on all the info. But, I feel that the girl hasn't moved on because there was never anything to move on from. She was a casual acquaintance that he fantasized about and still hasn't let go of that fantasy.
Some of the Doobie songs featuring Michael on lead vocals: Takin' It To the Streets; It Keeps You Runnin' ; You're Made That Way; Little Darling (I Need You); You Belong To Me; Nothin' But a Heartache; There's a Light; Here To Love You; Minute By Minute; Open Your Eyes; How Do the Fools Survive?; Dedicate This Heart; Real Love; One Step Closer; Keep This Train A-Rollin' ; One By One. These weren't all necessarily singles or hits. And some of them may have been album tracks. Also, I don't know if there are RU-vid videos of them.
Micheal McDonald and Skunk Baxter came over to the Doobie's in 1974 from Steely Dan, Tom Johnson got sick and was in the hospital and the Doobies needed a replacement lead vocal. They got Micheal to join and the rest is history, he really put a new fresh sound for the ban and created some of the best songs the Doobies created.
"The chorus, the chorus" IKR? I used to have this on a 45rpm and would play it over and over. Gorgeous. EDIT: It's true. Doobie is USA slang for a spliff, joint, reefer!
He is still touring today and sounds as good! He sometimes plays with the Doobs and other times with Kenny Loggins. Kenny and Michael wrote What a Fool Believes together and when they sing it together it is still one of the best songs anyone will ever hear!
I am watching this for the second (maybe third) time ... because I love your reaction. Then I realized, I always like your reaction; I like your comments; I like your taste; I like your humor; I like your views on life ... I really like YOU! I believe you are the best (no pun inended) reactor on YT! So I wanted you to know that. You are such a good human being and I thank you.
the way the chorus leads straight into the next verse is so unique. Michael McDonald is always astounding and the other band members are top notch too - the material, the song. No wonder this song is still heard by millions every day, nearly 45 years later
Written by Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins. This won the Grammy Song of the Year for 1979🏆 MM sang with Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Steely Dan, Toto, Patti Labelle and late James Ingram, RIP.
There is another song by the Doobies that Patrick Simmons sings he plays guitar and sings background, it is my favorite. It’s called Southcity midnight Lady. Tom Johnston was lead singer in the beginning left the band M. M. Sang lead for awhile then Tom came back.
Don't forget about Pat Simmons. He was the lead singer on Black Water and was the only band member there from the beginning to the end. He is singing backup but continued to sing lead on many other songs. Yes, the story about the band's name is true.
