The Doolittle Raid was the launch of a bombing raid from the Japanese coast on April 18, 1942. The attack - intended to serve as propaganda and response to the attack on Pearl Harbor - was planned by Lieutenant-Colonel James Harold Doolittle, and was made possible by the observation technician, Captain Francis Low, who stated that 2-engine planes could be launched from aircraft carriers. Subsequent tests proved that a B-25 Mitchell could be launched with a reasonable bomb load, hit targets in Japan, and then land in China.[1]
