A step-by-step Walkthrough of Unholy Temple (Doom 64, Map23) for the PC, played through Steam, on the Watch Me Die! difficulty setting. 100% Kills, 100% Items, and 100% Secrets. MAP23: Unholy Temple is the twenty-third map of Doom 64, designed by Tim Heydelaar. It uses the music track "Relentless Coil".

Quick probability fact in this map for any math fanatics like me: the color coordinated puzzle operates on the rule that you can use each color only once in the 3-color code. Thus, there are 3•2•1=6 possible codes you can enter. 3 are correct, and 3 are wrong. So even if you do the puzzle by trial and error, you probably won’t be in trouble if you have enough ammo to deal with the hellknights. The codes are BRY, BYR, RBY, RYB, YBR, and YRB. Of these, BYR, RBY, and YRB are correct.

One of my favorite maps! Also, here's a neat trick to memorizing the combinations that AtomicFrog thought me. Simply start with each color once, then pick the two remaining colors in clockwise order. So Yellow+Red+Blue, then Red+Blue+Yellow and finally Blue+Yellow+Red.

I developed a very... let's just say unorthodox way of remembering the right orders, lol: I took each 3-letter acronym and phonetically pronounced them out loud BYR = Buyer RBY = Ribby (kind of like when people phonetically pronounce the acronym RBI in baseball; same exact pronunciation) YRB = Yarb (probably not an actual word, but I remembered this because it sounded funny :P) Like I said, unorthodox lmao

Yeah I was amazed they ported it back in 2020. I thought this game would have just ended in obscurity, but thanks to the port, I see many reviews and playthroughs of it now

Unholy Temple is a very challenging map that is for sure. However I really don't find this a problem now that I played this much better than I did in the past. The combo for the Key's for the 3 switch is actually easy to remember. I'll admit I did have a hard time finding all secrets there, but in the end, I did like this map just fine. Good job BMD. Keep this up. 🙂👍

This is one of the maps, if not the THE map, that most people seem to have trouble with. I started getting so many comments on my original Doom 64 EX playthrough once the PC version came out, because a lot of people had trouble with the switch combination.

Yeah, this map gave me trouble when I streamed it blind. For some reason I could never remember the combinations, or which doors were which.

Heh, nice mnemonic story for the switch puzzle :) Those green flames might come from several possible elements burning - copper, boron or barium... I'll go with barium since we've encounter an apparently friendly demon "winking", "flashing"... almost like a succubus at the bar, isn't it? ;)

Actually BMD, the Baron pillars lower when you kill the BARON with the Box of Rockets, when you kill that one first, the 2nd BARON comes down to your level to wreck havoc on you.

Ah yeah I always loved the contrast between the green flame sky and the water in the beginning of the level. I however hate the homing missle traps in this map. I never knew, that you can trigger them and stay behind the pillars so you don't get hit. I always rushed through the outside area where the missle traps are. But of course I died a lot of times. And yes the combinations. I usually just wrote them down on a paper. The platforming part I always press the switch and then rush to the area where the cacodemons spawn. That worked most of the time. The map is cool. The next map is crazy.

Back in the day I would just grab a paper note and write down the key combinations 😅 also I just find it spooky how at some point the music stops, just like in Research Lab because they use the same soundtrack 2:12 Automatic captions: "Europe wants a ribeye steak..."

@@BigMacDavis15:55 Worth mentioning here if I'm not mistaken but, by simply walking out and going back in to the key combination section, the switches are lowered again, so if you have all combinations memorized, you can do them all without having to visit their corresponding arenas one at a time

People should probably break out the plasma or unmaker for those second 2 Cacodemons. Cacos can be quite nasty if they manage to flank you, as I've found out more than few times.

When I played this map I went back to each combo one at a time and remembered them as I walked back to the place where you enter them. Remembering YRBs story will be helpful! I also spawned hell knights multiple times remembering wrong 😂

When I did the barricade switch thing at the end of the level I kept hitting all 3 switches and going back to the doors with the three colors and they were always all blocked and when I went back to the switches they were reset so eventually I figured out the combo for one of the switches and for some reason after that all 3 doors were no longer blocked. I didn’t have to enter all three codes but maybe I did it unknowingly since I actually tried it 3 times. Funny thing is no barons spawned maybe it’s because I do it at the lower difficulty.

I should actually clarify one item. I play on the Nintendo 64 game system, not a computer using the steam engine. I also have all of the cheat codes for the 64 version of DOOM.
