Doom 64 is a science fiction horror-themed first-person shooter for the Nintendo 64 that was released by Midway Games on March 31, 1997. It is part of the Doom series of video games.
Doom 64 plays almost identically to earlier games in the Doom series; the player must advance through numerous levels fighting demons, collecting weapons and keys and hitting switches in order to reach the level's exit while surviving deadly traps and ambushes. Changes were made to the Doom engine for use in Doom 64, and gameplay elements were altered.
Following the conclusion of the original Doom series, the sole Marine who survived the horrors of hell had returned to Earth, reclaiming it from the invasion that almost eradicated the human race. Demons still lingered within the abandoned halls and complexes of Phobos and Deimos. As a last-ditch effort, the military decided to bombard the moons with extreme radiation in hopes of killing off any remaining demons. Initially it was successful, however something survived the exposure. The radiation blocked the military's sensors and allowed something to slip past them undetected. This mysterious entity, possessing the ability to resurrect any demon it came across, recreated the entire demonic horde and made it stronger than ever before. A Marine strike force was ordered to contain the advancing armies of hell but was mercilessly slaughtered within moments. The player's character is the sole survivor of this group.

The enemies that were dropped, were dropped because of memory limitations the same reason there is not a reload animation for the shotgun.

@basement hermit He means both. Neither shotgun has their reload animation. @KillThad No, there were no animations of the shotguns working. The ones that exist in Brutal Doom 64 were photo-manipulations done by fans.

Not to mention the fact that firmer fabrics like denim are great for helping to conceal boners and protect the asscheeks of both genders when sitting. Things get really awkward when you go to bonerville in public if you don't have pants, *especially* if your undergarments have an aperture through which the aforesaid boner might protrude through.

What i like the most about Doom 64 is that it really nails the claymation art style better than OG Doom. It truly makes the game fit in with the edgy 90s franchises like Mortal Kombat, Rampage, Carmageddon, Postal, South Park, and NARC.

pepper Mill Well, the Arch-Vile and Reverent could be annoying if misused. But, they can also provide a pretty good fight if used correctly. The Spider- Mastermind isn't much of a challenge if you have room to move and some cover. Even in a tight space and hardly any cover, you can still take them down pretty quick.

Doom 64's sound and music was done by Aubrey Hodges who worked at Williams at the time. He also worked on the Playstation version of Doom and that port has a very different soundtrack using a lot of slower paced music and ambient sound effects that wouldn't be out of place in a survival horror game. It's a soundtrack that instead of pumping up your adrenaline serves to build tension and highlight the creepy atmosphere with the aid of improved lighting effects that the porting team whipped up to take advantage of the Playstation's superior hardware (compared to 1992 PCs.) Doom 64 offers more of the same stuff. One hilarious thing is the ambient sound effects weren't all that hard to do. Hodges once said in an interview that the groaning, growling, muttering, and chanting were done by him using his own voice and an empty plastic Taco Bell cup to produce the reverb and distortion effects. The Unmaker weapon (The laser firing demon weapon,) was actually from the 1991 Doom Bible written by Tom Hall but never implemented in the old Doom games. If I had to guess why I'd say it was because it was completely different from the other weapons which were all technology based while the Unmaker was said to be formed via a demonic ritual and fashioned out of demon bones. And if it were to perform like it does in D64 then rendering 3 ray tracers at once with the graphical lasers (Doom uses a Raytracing engine and all it's hitscan weapons and BFG utilize raytracing,) could have adversely affected performance. Engine wise Doom 64's greatest achievement is full room over room architecture a la Quake since the vanilla Doom engine couldn't handle RoR. Even with modern source ports that utilize Open GL capability true RoR still isn't possible with the Doom engine, so Open GL source ports 'fake it' via invisible teleports to separate parts of the map. The transition is seamless so most players don't notice.
@harryturdknocker82
@harryturdknocker82 8 лет назад
Yeah, I've noticed in some tracks he's saying "I want my mamma" and you can hear that fairly clearly at times, other times it's super slow and low pitched. Voices in the Blood(Dark Citadel) is a good example, it's low pitched but still clear at first, then super low pitched, then fast high pitched all towards the beginning of that track.
@npc_blob1609

Actually, OpenGL ports don't fake room-over-room, but Doom 64 _does._ In Doom 64, lowered sky ceilings operate differently to in classic Doom. Instead of rendering sky where the lowered ceilings are, the game renders nothing at all, allowing for floating solid structures and overhangs. For the room-over-room sections, they just use instant-moving sectors. Check the Automap in (I believe) Level 5 when you go through the 3D halls - it changes. I also read somewhere that Doom isn't a raycaster but can't confirm this and also there's a Doomworld post on the topic which I haven't read.
@Anomaly188
@Anomaly188 7 лет назад
I thought I read once on the Doom wiki saying specifically saying the Doom engine was a raytracer engine, but looking back at the wiki I can't find any evidence of that. Either I was wrong in my assumption or I forgot where I saw the raycaster label.
@npc_blob1609
@npc_blob1609 7 лет назад
Well, there are plenty of threads on the matter. To reiterate something I said earlier, simply because I didn't make it clear, OpenGL ports are true 3D and support ROR because levels are created as 3D models through them.
@bfgfanatic1747
@bfgfanatic1747 6 лет назад
1: DooM's engine isn't raytraced, it's a rasterized binary space partition. 2: DooM 64 still doesn't support room-over-room. That effect is achieved with a mixture of skyhack geometry, silent lifts, and invisible triggers. The maps are still composed of non-overlapping sectors with planes for floors and ceilings. It's not at all full room-over-room, you're just walking over the raised floor of the sector you're "above". Actually, I'd say DooM 64's greatest achievement(s) is two things: The beautiful gradient lighting, and the macro scripting that allows complex map event handling.

6:37 That comment is untrue, level design is much different in 64. More of a focus on puzzle solving and platforming than the first two games, to 64's determent. Also there are fewer enemies and the levels are more enclosed than DOOM II. If the bread and butter of II was circle strafing and crowd management, the bread and butter of 64 is puzzle solving and atmosphere. Besides the art design the levels are the largest distinguishing factor between this and id DOOM.

@@Riverslidebishop I legit do too. I love Doom's puzzle solving and key card searching, but sometimes it feels like levels drag out and are really tedious at times. Doom 64 feels a lot more digestible in comparison. I could be wrong about later levels though, as I'm still fairly early in the game. Doom 1 and 2 are great, but 64's levels feel more digestible as well as easier to learn than some of the original levels and I would recommend 64 to a new player. ALso the secrets are a bit more challenging imo too.

One thing: The PS1 version of Doom couldn't handle too many enemies at once otherwise the game would overload and cause the system to crash, so I'd say it's a engine issue, not a hardware issue.

Hotsex spy Not lacking hardware as such. It's more or less the same reasons that most early PS3 games was on less details then their Xbox 360 version. Or running at 560P and not 720+ like Rockstar did on most of their PS3 games "GTA V not inc". Or Mafia 2 had no grass an was running ground textures on what equaled to low on PC vs medium on 360. It was not due to the PS3 having less power. Just the developers that did take shortcuts due to lack of understanding hardware and how to code the game to make the most of it.

Hotsex spy In Doom 64's case, cartridge capacity was the issue. They couldn't fit everything they wanted, even the shotguns are missing their reload animations.
@HermaphroGynandro
@HermaphroGynandro 9 лет назад
P4INKiller If they used a larger cartridge size, they could've probably done it with relative ease. I saw this one comment on a forum "If I recall correctly Doom 64 didn't use the biggest memory size cartridge the Nintendo 64 had available. I remember Doom 64's was 96 megabits and the biggest size was around 312 (actually 512) megabits, I guess it was the higher cost for more memory which prevented them from wanting to use a larger size, a shame because they might have not had to cut certain monsters from the game otherwise." ~Avoozl on Doomworld.com 96 megabits = 12 megabytes 512 megabits = 64 megabytes Maybe larger n64 ROMs didn't exist when this game came out, which was Spring of 1997 (a year before the Expansion Pak). So Doom 64 could've possibly been made nearly 5 1/3 times bigger (on the same console!) It just makes you ponder… ;-)

Its been added to the list of games that me and my best friend call classics. Other examples of these classics include Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, the wolfenstein series (mainly wolfenstein 3D and return to castle wolfenstein.) I was thinking the same thing. I have doom 64 ex, but I might hold off playing it until brutal doom 64 is released. I still have doom 64 for the n64(as I have all official doom games except the newest one/remake which I will get eventually), but it(game+n64) is packed away so porting it over to the pc was a great idea & a long time coming. I played quite a bit of doom 64 a while ago but I never beat it. It will give a lot of players a chance to finally play doom 64 if they did not have it or did not play it back in the day. I consider doom 64 sort of the spiritual predecessor to doom 3 as they are very similar to each other on a base level.

skyblue11685 It does seem to be the real cannon Doom 3. The new Doom, which turns out to be an oddly-named sequel, rather than a reboot, takes the events of Doom 64 into account (along with the original and Hell on Earth, of course).

***** He's not "from another dimension". He's "The only flesh and blood to walk between dimensions... between our world and theirs." And it's not the first time the UAC has been taken over by demons. They're extracting argent energy from Hell, which is new, but it's certainly not their first interaction. The game picks up where Doom 64 left off, in which Doomguy decided to stay behind in Hell to ward off the demons from mankind for the rest of his life, but he was ultimately overwhelmed and sealed away inside a casket... until someone woke him up in this game. Heck, demons and humans alike talk about what a legend he is and all his gargantuan accomplishments. This game references the previous titles numerous times, not as easter eggs, but as prior events.

Doom 64 without a doubt has the best atmosphere of any Doom game. Don't get me wrong, I prefer Doom II, but in terms of atmosphere this game nails it.

I covered this on my channel when It was Absolution. I heard this was more accurate but you needed to the N64 rom whereas Absolution needed the original Doom last time I checked anyway. But yeah this was the scariest Doom has ever been thanks to the lighting music, and the fact that the environments are more claustrophobic, which is why I've always like this version of Doom the most. Also the double barreled shotgun uses more shells iirc, so it doesn't necessarily make the og shotgun worthless imo. Man I'm glad I never fell into all that idiotic Nintendo vs Sega vs Sony nonsense and just played them all. I rolled with a Saturn, PS1 and played the N64 with friends or borrowed it for specific games. Then later switched over to PC and that was great as well. Great review btw.

SaintAlia_of_the_Games Right, but consider that a lot of people can't afford all of those systems. So it's not just about fanboyism, it's about choosing the system that's right for you, if you can only have one.
@ruekurei88
@ruekurei88 9 лет назад
VNVNation2013 I couldn't afford any of those systems though and bought all of them second hand cheaply from people I know, or friends of friends. I had to not eat and save money to buy my gameboy and game gear. And all games I got were traded and bought second hand or given to me as well. I got a GC at the tail end of the generation for example at a second hand store with a couple games(Metroid Prime, RE4 and one other game I can't remember right now). Besides, only choosing one platform doesn't mean you have to be biased against another, or completely excise it from your circle pf gaming. Your friends or people you know will likely have other platforms or you can go to other places to play, which is what I did.

So your two overall problems with Doom 64 are A) It's on the N64 which limits the amount of enemies somehow, to which I say you probably didn't spend enough time playing on 'Watch me die' or even 'I own doom' difficulty levels. It may look like there are less enemies to fight at once on easier levels, but the larger sprites gives them the illusion of there being less. and B) Doom 64 is paced slower than Doom 1. While I might be inclined to agree with that, I can't count it against the game. Doom 64 is nintendos take, completely different from what PC gamers even think about in terms of shooters now and probably back then too. Everything you mentioned like the lighting and sound makes it stand out from the rest of the series, IMO it has more/more detailed gore than Doom 1 as well, and aside from the fact that the N64 was my childhood, thats what makes it the definitive game for me.

@tonymontana1649

Doom 64 did a great job handling itself when they couldn't fill up the maps with hundreds of monsters. Instead, they throw the big dogs at you more. The game absolutely loves hell knights more than any other officially released Doom games, and I think they did a wonderful job handling this throwing more difficult monsters on there. This comment is correct, play on 'I Own Doom' or 'Watch Me Die' and they'll throw tons of hell knights with the barons at you in tight spaces where it's difficult to strafe and dodge them. I absolutely love Doom 64. It's a little bit slower than the original Doom but I don't think this is real problem for people that liked to play Doom by creeping up and sneaking about waiting for the enemies. The game does a great job with the teleporting enemies as you circle and back track levels. I feel like this game was screwed a bit having th ename Doom 64 and just being on the N64. Had it been called Doom 3, and released on more consoles (where they wouldn't have limited to exclude the missing monsters) it would rightfully be universally respected.

I picked up this game when it originally came out on the 64 and loved it. I recall it getting somewhat negative reviews at the time with people calling it an unnecessary version, not as advanced as other FPS games of the day, etc.... Kind of funny how now it seems to be more appreciated than when it originally came out. Will have to try this PC port as it looks pretty damn good (my only complaint with the original game was how dark it was, even when you cranked up the brightness).

I absolutely hate the level design, compared to Doom 1 and 2. Almost every level is a slog, where you hop from switch to switch, combing the entire level each time to find out what the switch did. Doom 1 and 2 were just far more logical, and as a result moved at a better pace, and had a better ratio of shooting to wandering around aimlessly.

nakamine1713 I'm 25 years old and I didnt had a N64 when I was a child, I had a Ps1 as everybody else, but with time I just realized most N64 masterpieces were better than ps1 ones, the kiddie argument is getting really old, a good game is a good game, and I dont see how games like Perfect Dark, Ocarina of time, Majoras Mask, Goldeneye, Conker. Turok, etc etc etc are just for kids...

Good Night Moon It's about 2 games coming out a year. Like you just admitted, you're both too young to have had one and on top of that you were the target demographic (a child). The reduced enemy count was indeed due to the restraints of the N64. I have to admire the developer for choosing to somewhat re-interpret Doom to a much more moody and atmospheric experience, most likely to make up for the number of enemies the N64 could pump out. I loved the intro sequence to Doom 64 where a large battle is playing out with the camera panning through it to reveal that it's actually shaped like the DooM logo. I had played Doom on PC first, but Doom 64 was the first one I beat on my lonesome as a kid. And really, it scared the crap out of me at the time. Even replaying it now, some of those audio tracks can really get under your skin.

Fun fact: because of the Nintendo 64's hardware limitations, every texture in the game is rendered in grayscale, with the colorized sectors providing the actual color for the textures rather than them simply being colored on their own.

I really enjoy your videos and I appreciate the amount of effort put into them. I subscribed by probably the 5th or 6th video I watched. If I could make one suggestion, though, it would be in regards to the sound mixing. The parts where you're speaking are much quieter than the parts where you cut to the game audio only, which causes those gameplay parts to hit you in the ear like an eardrum-destroying hammer (ok, it's not quite that bad). Watching from the pc with volume equalization fixes it, but it's noticeable when watching on mobile devices. Otherwise, your videos are fantastic. Keep up the good work. Oh, and if you're already addressing/have addressed this issue, my comment is completely redundant.
