Lack of storage with an N64 cartridge was why the shotgun and super shotgun do not have proper reload animations, as well as missing chaingun guys, revenants, and archviles. The atmosphere Doom 64 had was a major and welcome departure though, and was slower paced than OG Doom.
Aubrey Hodges OST just changed the whole feel of the games, from feel ling a run and gun action game to a terrifying experience. I was so, happy when I started making horror content that Hodges even gave me permission to use his work BC it fits so well BC of the ambience it creates
One thing this game had- atmosphere. It really feels like you’re in real danger and something is out to get you at every corner. You always felt a little uneasy while wandering the stages. That was the best part of the game for me.
SR 388 I just saw and I have to ask why??? Wouldn't it be better to give people something to hold them over till next year then put them out at the same time and have nobody even touch it because they're busy with Doom Eternal?
Interesting looking sequel and I can see why you call it the real Doom 3, sure it's jank in a few places but I love the look of how experimental it is. Gonna be an experience to see the Doom 3 video
Super Shotguns lack of reload animation was due to the limitations of the storage in the original cartridge space. They made some cuts like that and the animatiom for the pump action shotgun as well as two different sprites for the zombie soldiers. Thats all
Same thing with Quake 1's super shotty. Fans just went ahead and agreed they were lever actions (even if they aren't). The folks that made Arcane Dimensions for Quake 1 even made a pickup model for the double barreled with the lever mechanism.
Good video! This game is probably my favorite Doom game because it feels like an evolution of the formula. Sure some enemies are missing, but the ones that are there more than make up for it. It's a game that genuinely scares me, while still maintaining what made Doom Doom. Also really liked the...the....SIDE QUEST...involving the secret level keys.
This DOOM was (and still is) great, and re-visiting this game twice in the last two days (in my N64 for old times sake and on my Ps4 because I was curious about the Lost Levels and how they tied the game to DOOM 2016 and Eternal) and I had a tear of joy after I completed the Lost Levels because the experience was enjoyable and awesome just like in 1997 (plus, it doesn't help that it was the 1st DOOM game I played and for that reason alone, DOOM 64 has a very special place for me, AND that also it marked my childhood days of gaming when it comes to FPS games, and as a final note, that song at the endings of the game back when my bros and I completed the game... mostly I, the song made us feel badass ourselfs after so many hardships and getting all the stuff payed off... especially because we did it on "Watch me Die!!!").
Same! I got this with Doom Eternal, and actually enjoyed it more “really was not a huge fan of eternal, prefer 2016”! I still play it on and off a couple of times a month on average. I also had the original Doom 64 as a kid but remember it scared me too much to ever beat it back then lol
Sure, the super shotgun got the short end of the stick, but the chaingun though? That thing looks and sounds sick as hell in this game! It's a huge improvement over the original one if you ask me.
[Edit - 3/22/21] Welcome New Viewers! Please keep in mind that this review was started before the Doom 64 Re-Release was even announced. That scene in the opening was recorded fairly late into production after it was announced. The "Weird One" title was more a reference to it being almost Cryptid-like for the series because of its N64 exclusivity. Thanks! [Original Post] I've fooled all of You! That footage early on wasn't the OG Doom 64, I took Doom 64 EX footage, cropped it, and turned down the FPS! HAHA... sorry... I just wanna say... Great video. It's my favorite DooM. Always will be, the rightful and true DooM 3... As for the hidden level HECTIC from the first level... I go there Everytime just to break that levels scripts. It is soooooo broken. That level can be done in less than two minutes... LESS THAN
I just recently beat Doom 64 but when you started shooting the faces at 3:46 I started sweating because of the jump scare with the Hell Knights that happens after you try and leave the room, this game really is one of my favorites from the Doom series
The order in which you blow the barrels up doesn't matter, the secret will still open regardless. It's just best to save the first one otherwise you won't reach the door
For those who don't know, the powerups in Hectic can be picked up. If you turn off autorun and slowly edge yourself to the bottom left corner of the supercharge trap, the trap will activate, and because of the limitations of the N64 cartridge, only one script can be run at a time, so you can grab everything and leave before the trap stops.
Playing Doom 64 on Switch is a blast - I've been going through it in handheld and there are times I legitimately jump out of my seat, console in hand, astonished by the jump-scares and ominous ambience. Definitely would recommend considering it's often on sale for *checks eshop* cheaper than dirt, and it's interesting to learn that the sequel to Doom 2 was once 64 exclusive.
I'm gonna save the expansions for Doom 3 for a separate video, alongside the BFG edition. I was going to have them as a single video, but the Doom 3 video is already crazy long at the moment that I decided I'm gonna save it for later.
To me Doom 64's aesthetic and level design always felt more like a Quake 0.5 than a Doom sequel and I say that as a good thing. It's not my favorite, but it is pretty cool.
I will say that while the SSG looks and was animated more simplistic (likely cartridge space limitations), it does fire much faster and imo is a fair upgrade from the Doom II counterpart Besides Quake's SSG is almost similar animation wise
How to open the cage in the level before last (No Escape)... Take the teleporter located in the cavern in the red radiation pit. This takes you inside of a fortress-like area. Head for the open balcony area in the fortress and look to the right. You will see a switch set on top of a cutout. Strafe jump onto the cutout and activate the switch. This opens a wall that leads to the back section of said cutout where another switch is placed. Jump off the cutout and head for the cavern in the red radiation pit again to go back to the fortress area. Enter the back of the cutout through said open wall and activate said switch. This switch opens the cage housing the cyberdemons which you must slay to end the map. The switch on the outside that you need to elevate yourself to reach only lowers the pillar which has the rocket launcher perched on top of it. To reach it, there are four outside elevators in between the main elevators. The one closest to the rocket launcher pillar will raise you high enough to jump on to the platform to activate the switch.
I believe Midway did initally pitch this AS Doom 3 during development, but it had to be N64 exclusive as Midway were part of the "Nintendo Dream Team" and were contracted to make a couple of exclusive games for the system, otherwise they'd have just ported the PS1/Saturn Doom over. But the other Midway N64 "dream team" exclusive was Wayne Gretsky's Hockey, one of the worst games on the console, so we kinda lucked out with Doom 64 :D
Fun fact now that you've covered DOOM Eternal and TAG1&2 The DOOM 64 Lost Levels tells how the Doomguy got sent to Sentinel Prime (he killed the mother demon's sister causing a dimensional rift) and in DOOM Eternal you see how he becomes the DOOM Slayer (which you know ofc) So that's a fun little fact
I haven’t tried Doom 64 assuming it was another port with a few changes, but now I really want to try it out even though it and Eternal got delayed for next year. P.S. I can’t get enough of the “Wait, what you mean?” running gag with these Doom videos.
@@zacharydrahm825 1. Doom 64 literally says "After the events of the previous games. 2. Doom/Doom eternal are full reboots. The devs say they cant spoil it but this will be proven in doom eternal.
While doom 3 is a black sheep amongst the doom games, I do enjoy it, it's cheesy main bad guy dr Betruger is honestly hilarious to me Anyway dude nice vid, doom 64 is a classic, plus you remind me of civvie 11 mixed with Scott the woz with these doom vids lol
@@ThatTravGuy hey no problemo dude, mind if I suggest another shooter to try out? Unreal is one of my favourite games, it's atmosphere and weapons are amazing and blows quake 2 out the of the water lol
Unreal is a series I always missed out on - I've always wanted to see what I've been missing out on! It's on my radar, just probably won't get to a video on it for some time.
@@ThatTravGuy fair enough, unreal gold is the best version to get as it has the expansion campaign, you might need to get the fan patch for it called oldunreal. And unreal 1 is like the only game in the series to have a single player campaign, I don't count unreal 2 because it's nothing like the first game lol
I got to play the re release because it was that game I’ve always wanted to play but couldn’t. Such an amazing and eye candy experience with moments of frustration at times. Great video!
I would love a doom 2016 prequel that are the events of when doomguy stayed in hell after 64, especially with the plot points like the maykrs and sentinels with eternal
I played this one recently, I thought it was a nice surprise. Quite different from Doom 1&2, with a darker atmosphere and slower pace, but I appreciate it for what it is.
I think you hit the nail on the head when calling it droning. I tried to get into it but the music and having to back track so much and getting lost hunting for the switch or darkly lit door that I missed got old. Plus I managed to accidentally fuck up my saves and ruin my save, I also really like that Doom 64 essentially became Doom 3 and then leads into Doom (4) 2016 and Eternal
Doom 64 is so good. I've played through it completely 3 times, each on a different platform. I originally beat it using Doom 64 EX, then Brutal Doom 64, then the PS4 rerelease. I tried the PC version, but its controls feel so off for some reason, weirdly floaty. Ive also attempted playing the N64 version, owned it at one point, but never got very far. The game does have some flaws though. You really start feeling the limited monster roster in the later levels, it turns into what feels like fighting a Baron around every corner. The levels also can have a lot of switch hunting and puzzle solving that isn't always clear how to solve. There are several levels you will be aimlessly wondering around because you didn't see the switch behind that random column in that one room, and even if you do it isn't always clear what it actually did. The N64 version is also insanely dark. Also, who ever designed the levels was definitely a fan of the "fortress surrounded by water" theme.
They changed the end writing in the re-release. They changed it from him staying in hell forever to him "going down the path of perpetual torment." Which brings the game in line with Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.
DOOM 64 was the 1st DOOM game I played back when it was released and my personal favorite (I didn't have much knowledge of the series on those days, but I didn't have troubles to figure out that it was a sequel to DOOM 2) and this couple of days I revisited the game on both my N64 and Ps4 and oh man, now I think I should give it a serious go to DOOM 2016 as I have only played it for a few minutes.
4:40 6:55 It also has rooms over rooms! I've only played the re-release, which I'm pretty sure is the same. Even if not, there's still teleporter trickery available
If you are anyone ever feels like replaying through Doom 64, I would recommend playing with DOOM 64 Retribution, a port for GZDoom that keeps the game intact (except for adding more frames in all the right places, and yes, that includes the SSG) and adds DLC and all the nice features that come with GZDoom. It even features a gallery of sorts. Definitely makes revisiting D64 something to look for
Great video. This may actually be my favorite of the classic Doom games now that it’s on current consoles. It’s a great mix of Doom action with Quake mood.
heard it was secretely the best doom game... picked it up for 3 bux last week... havent been able to put it down... my god, its so awesome and as a teen who had an N64 how did I miss the beaut of a game lol
I was like everyone else and thought it was a port …. And I still had doom 1&2 on pc so I just ignored it completely cuz of the N64 controller too…. Wow so glad I picked it up recently . Beat it in a weekend and loved every second of it !
Pain elementals are undead cacodemons, which is pretty interesting, not sure why they have hair though. As for the super shotgun, the reloading animation was left out due to limitations in cartridge space, some people have made their own iteration of a reload animation for source port mods such as Brutal Doom 64. The cartridge limitation is also the reason why the regular shotgun has no cocking animation. In addition for the re-release they added more levels to the game which i think you should check out, should you have the time or interest.
The reason for the super shotgun being bad and not reloading is well it’s obvious the game was originally on the n64 and I don’t think you can modify the games weapons
A remarkable achievement!! I can't find the immersion in modern photorealistic games that I felt in this virtual nightmare Doom 64. There must be some psychological phenomena or clinical terminology given to why that is. The sound track certainly helps but there's this immersion I felt in this 3D construction I never felt in Doom 1&2. It's like the weirdest David Lynch movie. It possesses the similar surreal vibe.
My favorite DOOM game for sure. The change in music set a new tone to the atmosphere where the sounds of the environment, monsters etc. stood out and made it 10x better. While the original DOOM was more Rock n' Roll, DOOM 64 was pure horror shit your pants!
All the comments like "it was rereleased it got rereleased".... My brothers in super-shotguns, he made the video in 2019, six months before it was actually ported to PC, Switch, PS4, and XBox. Which he actually mentions is coming.
Doom 64 is a ton like Marathon 2: durandal. Switch hunting? Check! Massive maze-like levels? Check! Atmospheric focus? Definitely check! But Marathon 2 and 3 have no music at all, but i run the doom soundtrack in the background on RU-vid anyway.
I agree with you, this is definitely my DooM 3 and I always placed it in my version of the canonical timeline. But then again, where does Plutonia Experiment fit into the timeline?? If it is Canon. The actual Doom 3 is a spin-off with a brand new marine going through a demonic attack on Mars, while the real DooMGuY is still in HELL because of his DooM 64 quest in my opinion. That’s how I see things with the DooM timeline, and DooM Eternal explained a whole lot of the story and I love the inclusion of the Mykars and Night Sentinels. It opened up a whole lot of whole new characters and lifeforms throughout the entirety of the universe.
Doom 64 is one of my favorite Doom games. Not only is it one of the first N64 games I played, it's also the game that got me into the Doom series in the first place.
I wonder if the concept art (or hell, even finished sprites) for the shotgun reloads and maybe even some of the missing enemies exist in Midway's archives. Well, Warner Bros' archives now, I guess.
Lately I've been seeing a lot of Doom 64 videos lately. Back in the day, this was by far my favorite Doom game when it came out. I still play this game on the PC, and it's still as fun as it ever was. Doom 64 is different in that everything about the game is dark in nature. From the music, to the environments, to the enemy spawns, it's just a different Doom game altogether. Oddly enough, I've been wondering if anyone is considering remaking Doom 64 in the Doom Eternal environmental. I know Doom Eternal can be modded. To what extent, I don't know. Either way, I think it would be nice to see this classic remade in a modern engine.
