The Doom Slayer returns! Doom Eternal was originally released back in March 2020 and has already become an FPS legend. It was my game of the year when the credits rolled and has remained my game of the year through 2020.
Now after months of patient waiting ID software has finally released the first of Doom Eternal's two part DLC, The Ancient Gods Part 1.
Doom The Ancient Gods features three new massive levels, new demons and some of the most difficult combat the Doom series has ever seen.
Is this Doom Eternal DLC worth its $20 dollar price tag? Or should the Slayer hang up his super shot gun? Find out in this review.

@@DropkickNation It's funny because by this point in time most people got good at the game, which made them realize how ridiculous those complaints sounded at the beginning. And for those who didn't, well, "I'm Too Young to Die" difficulty level still exists.

@@DropkickNation I love the marauder, because it makes you think and forces you to use different strategy, there are so many ways to deal with them and the entire process of discovery, is what kept me going. Also why not have a game for specific group of gamers, why everything have to be inclusive these days ?

@@DropkickNation Then you clearly haven't figured out how he works. He is a fake pressure piece on the board, clear out the other demons, you can easily avoid him and keep at arms length. Clear the other demons and then focus on him, alone he can not do much. He is just a traffic light man afterall.

@@DropkickNation You are faster than him, he is quite slow going through obstacles and elevation. His long range attack is easily dodged, dog is only summoned when he is blocking projectiles with his shield, you can go an entire fight with him, not summoning the dog once. We are probably playing a different game, I can completely ignore him for minutes if I want to, just keeping an eye where he is and just run around the arena, killing other demons that are the true source of dps againts you, once all other threats are gone, deal with him. Grenades, remote detonation mod, sticky nades even the bfg can be used for distraction to open him up if you are bored waiting for his eye flash. Thats it. Seriously Archviles are more dangerous than him.

@@DropkickNation I played on Ultraviolence, and suffered no deaths against the double marauders (and the massive wave of demons the room threw at me after I killed them) or the buffed marauder. It's just a matter of spatial awareness, trigger discipline, and knowing when to keep your distance and hunt for -walking resource packs- zombies. And proper Ballista-SSG quick-switching. But I guess that's just a bit too much for some people.

i think mostly cause of how he differs to other enemies. Like he is an enemy where you have to play the patient game instead of shredding around and all that. He isnt insanely difficult as reviewers said but i do agree that he is kind of a pace breaker. Still i didnt mind it that much

everything about this dlc is just a middle finger to non doom fans 1. after the 2nd big battle instantly a marauder later double marauder alot more platforming not just more annoying tantacles but 2 giant ones also spirits to make u not use the ballista a buffed marauder in the 2nd lvl which u HAVE to kill while buffed. they just hate game journalist and it makes me happy id is one of the best dev team ive ever seen and i respect them really much (even tho they lost some of that respect when they removed the doog easter egg)

I absolutely love every thing about this DLC. Disagree about the final boss though. I feel the last wave stepped a bit into annoying to beat rather than satisfying to beat.

I was probably just unable to find a good strat there, but I had to turn down the difficulty in the last phase from UV all the way down to ITYTD.

@@Xeotroid I managed to finish the dlc fully on nightmare on my first playthrough but the final phase of the boss fight made me turn the sentinel armor on which made me feel like cheating unfortunately. If I wasn't a controller player I'd probably overcome it without the armor but I still had fun nonetheless

Well my strategy on nightmare difficulty was to leave 2 bfg shots till the end, blast 2 on the pain elemental, he will be very low after it, then unload the rocket ammo on the dread knight, obviously there's the risk of the blood makyrs screwing you over or another pain elemental spawning if u couldn't get rid of the dread knight quickly, I guess there's some rng to it but I found it to be the quickest way to get rid of one and have some breathing room.

I loved this DLC, it's a shame seeing it get some negative reviews because people refuse to learn the Doom dance and then complain about ammo and difficulty lol

Is it!? I don't like to look at reviews to keep myself objective. I guess I remember hearing some complaints about the difficulty when it first came out. You're right though, once you embrace the game's mechanics you realize the difficulty is actually pretty fair... punishing yes, but fair.

@@KIRKCOLLECTS idk i cant tell if im good or the game just easy but i feel like the base game is harder having my entire equip made it a breeze for me. i did 2 nightmare runs on day 1 and then i did my first and also succesful ultra nightmare run it technicly wasnt the release date anymore but i finished the ultra nightmare i think about 10 hrs after release. so im not sure why ppl complain about the difficulty if a nobody can do it 10 hrs after release it cant be that hard

@@mariozunder3435 First of all, you are good, very good. Second, I think a lot of gamers aren't used to having a lot of resistance in their games. I think difficulty (good difficulty) is an acquired taste for a lot of gamers. Personally I didn't get a taste for challenge until I got into the Souls series .

The only bit of doom eternal i really struggled with was the boses I could beat ulmost every encounter on nightmare on my 3 or 5 atemt but the boses tock me 30 to 50 atemts

I did my first run of 2016 on Ultra-Violence and it had me but I managed. But on eternal I started on nightmare and boy oh boy did it give me a run for my money. I died a lot on 1 part but i managed but sadly i had to change the difficulty to Ultra-Violence when I got to the first Unmayker key battle. I just could not do it. after I changed to Ultra-Violence it wasn't easy but I did it on the first try. I still haven't finished it yet ( work and other stuff ) but the game is great and it isn't just a walk in the park and I love it for that.

@@BungalooEi2e Dread knight is a surprisingly easy target to put down if posessed. Just hit him with the micro missiles after killing a zombie preferrably to get the damage boost (seriously the DPS the mod cranks out is insane)

DLC in other games: We will assume you are new to the game so we have reduced the difficulty to none existant but you have everything DLC in Doom Eternal: We assume you have played the game so this is an extension of the main game.

@@hydroshock1853 The problem is I never played those games, nor am I able ot get far in Witcher 3 due to equipment breaking very early and I have no funds to repair it, or some secret game mechanic I am unfamiliar with.

@@Tucher97 Equipment is still very much usable when broken, it just does less damage. There are some repair kits to find, and monster contracts usually pay well.

I personally didn’t enjoy fighting the Blood Maykrs very much, and in general the Holt was far more sadistic than I expected. In my opinion, the entire DLC is a step up from every single level in the campaign, but the Blood Swamps were just masterful. The gimmicky mechanics like the wolf section, the cube fight, the giant tentacles, they were all fantastically fun. And the Spirits were too! Even the music is by far the best in the DLC.

Yeah the wolf section was a trip. The image of demons emerging from the mists gave me chills. The cube fight too was pretty nuts too, I wouldn't mind seeing something like that return in Part 2.

Blood Maykers seem to have a bit bloathed kit. They can do without the invincibility or the slowdown. They are currently balanced by being slow themselves, which isn't fun at all. At one point on final boss i simply started ignoring them.

@@KosmataBradva they’re not that hard to deal with but sometimes they just decide never to bring their shields down. I feel like the shields should only offer some damage resistance and still let you try to headshot them.

I did main campaign on ultra violence. One of the battles (the spirited baron one)in the blood marshes though beat me and I dropped the difficulty out of frustration. Props to anyone who did this madness on nightmare.

7:21 don’t forget the possessed marauder in the second slayer gate guarded by infinitely spawning carcasses they added. It took me 5 whole days to clear that gate on nightmare mode.

Definitely an underrated weapon! Good for tickling hell knights to trigger a stagger and the shield lets you get up close to blood punch a Cyber-mancubus

Yeah I got a habit of favoring the chaingun and super shotgun, although I found myself using the Ballista a lot more in this DLC. Also chaingun makes for more exciting footage IMP.

Quick correction: the desperate punch support rune takes effect when your health bar is under 75, Not 75%. Great review though, very well described and not as criticizing as most game journalists.

The game is crushingly difficult for me. After I beat the game I didn't feel rewarded or satisfied but rather "thank **** that's over and done with". The sky bridge section in The Holt was where I got stuck constantly and decided to just lower to easiest difficulty because at that point I just wanted it over and done with.

The difficulty curve was very high, especially since I was out of practice by now. Muscle memory kicked in and I can still say it's super brutal. Nightmare or even UV is pretty damn sick. The last phase of the final boss seemed easy but throw in the new blood makyr and have them constantly spawn and it's just a doozy. Possessed pain elementals and dread knight are nuts. The microwave beam is useful in stunning possessed enemies if you can get that going. Good for breathers and getting armor/health

On Nightmare and UN difficulty, Carcass did a pretty good job protecting his fellow demons from the rage of Slayer.

By the way I whole heartedly agree about the difficulty. I uploaded my ultra nightmare playthrough of Doom '16 on my channel and yet when playing the DLC on nightmare I had my face skullfucked in every way possible and died probably over 50 times. Half of those in the final phase of the final boss. It felt good to be challenged.

ID and Bethesda when regarding Doom are like Wrath from Darksiders 3. The harder you fight, the stronger he gets. The harder you complain about something, the more of it they add. You hate Marauders? Alright, sure. Here, have two Marauders at the same time, oh and with a buffed one too. You dislike Barons? Here, have 3 or more each fight, usually with one that cant be stunned and runs faster than you and your little Overdrive mod ever could. You hate Archviles? Here, have fucking 2 of them in a cramped arena along with like 5 spirit boosted Arachnotrons.

I am not the biggest fan of the spirits but their backstory is super cool.they are literally the sumeners from doom 2016.their whole species were wiped out in that game because of doomguy and that fact is awsome

iD Software is the best. They know exactly wtf they are doing! I'm so glad I grew up on the 90's on Wolfenstein 3D, the original DOOM games, the Quake games, etc. Also the Duke Nukem games, Half Life, Unreal, you get the picture. DOOM Eternal is definitely one of the best, if not the best game iD has ever made. Hell, it might be the most fun I've ever had with a game, and that's saying a lot. I know the original DOOM games have a ton of mods and are still highly influential and relevant today, but iD knocked it out of the park with DOOM Eternal. I just love it so much!

This DLC actually cracked into just too much for me. I beat the main game on Nightmare with a good challenge, but I ended up seriously frustrated and upset at most of the DLC. It's certainly not bad, but it's just so much and I ended up turning down the difficulty at the end because I just wanted to finish it. Very good design though, and a good DLC, just too much for me lol

I know the feeling bro. I am too hard on myself with everything in life so I didn’t let myself change difficulty but I was raging so damn hard in that first level until I got the constant 360 scanning and moving it requires figured out. It took me like 2 or 3 hours to beat that first level.

I know you're using a controller, but you can still do weapon swap combos for increased damage. SSG-ballista, precision bolt-ssg, precision bolt-rockets, etc. You can even pre-hold the mod to shoot as fast as possible, check out some 100% runs and you'll gain some new weapon combo ideas. An even better alternative, play with mouse and keyboard :) Also don't forget to mix in frag to falter enemies in your combos, I did see you using blood punch to kill frozen cyber mancubus which was good.

Finished my Ultra Nightmare run on console yesterday, got my ass beat in 20 different ways. I have to say, it was the best and worst experience I ever had. Especially on console, on PC it's no so bad, but damn the limited options on a contoller makes it 10 times harder. Beating UN in the base game felt great, but holy damn if I look back at it, UN in the base game felt like Rookie mode compared to this. You just know something's wrong when the double Marauder fight was one of the easiest in the entire DLC. The only thing I disliked about the DLC was the final boss. Fuck those respawning Blood Maykrs and fuck those eyes. I also never thought a possesed Pain Elemental would be such a pain in the ass. The arenas were simply to small for the amount of enemies thrown at you. I really hope they'll balance it in the second part. Still, I really love how they basically told the critics to fuck right off, I'm so glad they didn't listen to them. For the music, it was OK, sure it wasn't on Gordon's level, but I didn't expect that. It could have been a little louder, but all in all it's pretty good. For the skin you'll get, hot damn that gold skin looks 🔥 AF, but I don't know if it's enough to justify the pain you go through. Long story short, I never want to play UN in this DLC ever again, I'm so glad I'm done with it.

I found one of the funniest and annoying bug were you are stuck being "miniature" in the aquatic base. Were you couldn't shoot or do anything. The solution I found was to switch to classic gun placement and then back again.

Playing on Nintendo Switch, interested in playing Ancient Gods pt 1 because they've just released it for Nintendo. Picked it up a year after release, played through 2016 and Eternal both nightmare on Nintendo. Doom Eternal was life changing, just beat it on nightmare TODAY. Been playing the series since 1996. Still playing today. Very interested in the DLC campaigns.

Hey guys, I absolutely love this game. However I feel like the platforming and puzzles gets in the way of being able to load in and decimate waves of enemies mindlessly while simultaneously and unconsciously honing your combat skills and precision aim. Without the platforming I give the game a 10/10, but my honest review is 8.5. 100% worth the money and play throughs.
