Funny story: During an interview, Mick Gordon said that the producers wanted him to stand center-front and not move around too much. He asked to work the stage, they told him no. He rehearsed it the way they wanted him to do it, but when showtime came...he did it anyway.
@@torqq69 the reason why mick left was because apparently, mick was not meeting deadlines, and the music want what ID was visioning, they took his music and they changed it. apparently, this caused mick to be upset, so He and id got into an argument, which caused mick to stop working with doom eternal. Mick didn't compose any extra music for the DLC, and he confirmed he was gonna move onto different game development studios. It's really sad that this happened, especially considering DOOM and Mick were a match made in heaven. his legacy with doom will sorely be missed
@@DiamondLifer Well, yes, of course, music without words is much better than most bands, Miku doesn’t even need to tune the rhythm to the words, most rock bands can play like that.
@@3V1L5H0073R how would any of us know that? He could've been paid well despite being abused during 2016 and thats why he agreed to move forward (combined with his obvious passion for music of course).
@@dropkickpherby6994 in his big Medium post he p much said that the development of doom16 was fine and was not interfered by id and goes on to talk about eternal instead. I'm assume there was some crunch, but nothing outrageous like Eternal
@@motoweenies4431 nah I think he got fully paid for 2016. The current issue rn is that id used ~5hrs of his music on eternal but only paid him for 2hrs (what the contract said), and he argues that that is unfair because they are using more than what he was assigned and paid to do
Mick is such an outstanding composer and musician, it’s so sad to find out how he was treated on eternal. Can only imagine how godly the music would have been if all that complete mess didn’t happen.
@@JasonDean2047 Look up some videos on it, it’ll be faster. Short story is, they gave him very little time, payed him for only half the music he made, they tried to bribe him to take blame for eternals failure, the music was messily cut together by some random bozo not even Mick, etc.
@@JasonDean2047 Furthermore They pulled a scam on Mick saying some of his tracks arent good enough so they refused to pay him for said tracks, but then proceed to put those tracks in the game anyway.

Fun fact.. The drummer is one of the best drummers. I just saw the beanie hat and the V-Neck when they started playing and went "IS THAT FREAKING MATT HALPERN". Drummer for Periphery and is one HELL of a beast on the drums.
i just came to rewatch this for the first time since it happened, didnt know about periphery back then and watching it now i instantly saw the beanie and had the exact same reaction
Yeah kinda sad and crazy seeing pureness like this get dragged down by money corporate losers. We need to be the majority and stand along with Mick and others alike. I believe, anyways
dude, did you know that Mick is going to use...hmm, how to say, mb "metal screamers" - lots of people with extreme vocal in Doom Eternal's soundtrack like in a choir?)
@@WardenOfTerra I'm pretty sure its live cause if it was not then the drums would have sounded a lot sharper. Just listen to the snare u'll get the idea.
@@WardenOfTerra it sounds like theyre playing live over the actual track. you can hear the guitar and drums dont sound as crisp as the actual track (also the synthy-alien part sounds nothing like the normal track)
@Riccardo Milliava except, no? a distorted bass sounds *NOTHING* like a distorted 8/9 string. basses were made for a specific purpose, and so weren’t 8/9 strings.
@Riccardo Milliava listen to After The Burial with their distorted 8/9 string guitars, and then listen to Death From Above 1979 who run their bass through guitar amps and distortion. They sound completely different. If they were alike, there would be no need for 9 strings to exist at all. I would've just bought a 5 string bass and not an 8 string if they had the same sound
@Riccardo Milliava Do you know how guitar pickups work? That's not the case at all lol. My 30" bass vi tuned to drop C#0 sounds WAY different than my 9 string in the same tuning.
@@ripit.3457 i legit got a bass because of doom. didnt want a huge ass neck. sounds the same as a 8/9 string with proper post production. do you even know royal blood? should know ur shit better man
As a metalhead, it's awesome to see the non metal heads in that crowd have a taste of what a metal concert is like and enjoy it. I bet many of them converted lol
Agreed. I hope they had no idea it was coming and it scared the first timers haha. There's gotta be that small element of fear the first time you're bathed in metal lol
@the vengeful one they meant hes a kind and loving person on the inside Not an easily offended person This is why Twitter shouldnt be allowed to use words it just ruins their meaning
@@nagoshi01 I agree 100%. The drums are mixed unbelievably badly here and it sucks because when I first heard it, I didn't think the drummer was great. When I actually gave his band a shot though, he inspired me to start playing drums again, he's my favorite drummer besides Danny Carey, and they're my 2nd favorite band now
His snare is not tuned enough. It's almost like a super tight aim, but it became some strange flat Ska snare. I love tight snares, but his was not tuned right or not mic'd right
Seeing as Matt Halpern's on the drums, I wanna point those getting into metal because of Doom in the direction of Periphery. They're one of the best metal acts today and the influence they've had on Doom's soundtrack is very apparent. For a start, I recommend songs like Ragnarok and Make Total Destroy.
I've always loved metal but this video is what got me into periphery I gotta say though man, those are bad recommendations LOL There are so many more digestible and better songs by periphery for introducing people to them. I'd say garden in the bones for something less in your face, scarlet or alpha for something heavier, stranger things for something truly epic, Thanks Nobuo for an example of happy metal, and reptile for the truest representation of what the band is like.
He worked his ass off for it, winning an award for a soundtrack and then getting to play it in front of his dev peers. Highlight of career if you ask me.
The first thing metalheads learn about metal is that you don't take yourself seriously. That's part of what makes DooM so perfect for a heavy, pounding soundtrack like this... it embraces just how ridiculously over-the-top it is and, instead of worrying about "realism" or wondering if they're going too far, they try to go too far enough.
I loved the reference in 2:02 to the Quake II OST by Sonic Mayhem. I absolutely loved that OST, I remember the tracks, Tracks 02, 07 and 09 were my favorites.
imagine how the bored out of their minds non gamer dads felt that were dragged there by their kids when they ended up in a metal concert out of nowhere
This has got to be an amazing feeling. He probably sits in a little box, playing these sick riffs, playing them again and again, bobbing his head, and going "Yeah, that sounds really awesome", and now he gets the chance to finally get on a stage and just let out all that pent up energy, seems like a friggin' amazing experience.
In my opinion this was the single greatest on stage performance at the Game Awards, Mick Gordon absolutely tore the house down!! The BFG Division part of the performance always gets me chills!! Loved the drummers reaction too! 🎶🎧👏👏👏👏👏😊
*Briefing for Doom 2016 OST* id Software: "We don't want anything metal" Mick Gordon: "Okay so how about mixing a 9 string guitar with the sound of a chainsaw that shreds demons ?"
I like how Mick is so happy, running and bouncing about, while he's performing music that was used in a violent, graphic video game, about taking revenge on Hell for killing your rabbit.
@@DarkLord_Immoran it would be a really dumbfuck move from Bethesda (or Id software I dunno) to fire the guy who makes the heart of the game. I hope he comes back bcuz doom wouldn't be the same without the him
@@YoRHaUnit2Babe you don't want every single person on the planet dead in the movie..do you?? John wick with mick Gordon music would be unstoppable..lmao
Yeah the soundtrack would have sucked without Mick Gordon, what were they thinking, you can't have DOOM without metal, could you imagine DOOM with just dubstep crap or worse rap, ugh.
I love the small stuff Mick put into this performance, e1m1 riff, literally covering Q2's theme in the middle of it for like, no reason???? we love you mick, glad you were able to make such great music for an amazing franchise.
It's a shame that Bethesda is willing to break with him man this guy turned a gaming festival into a rock concert. This guy is a legendary monster of music.
@Kuooii clowning well no more collaboration between Mick Gordon and bethesda/ID in the future after the doom eternal released soundtrack fiasco, you can Google it...
@Kuooii clowning It's a bit complex of a situation. People complain that the Doom soundtrack didn't seemed to look like anything in the game, it seems it was badly remixed. This because during the process Mick seemed to struggle in properly remixing making the soundtrack s for shipping. So Id software (I think it was them) Gave Mick 2 more weeks I believe. Still Mick didn't managed to delivered anything and so one of the people of the company had to do the remixing themselves for shipping. The result was that the music didn't looked like anything and Mick seemed pissed. But here is the thing, first we got the badly remixed Doom music. Them Mick confessed on a twit that he was unhappy the way they remixed. And then one of the directors of the game came out and told the story about Mick missing the deadlines and so they had to do the the remixing themselves. This quite a few mouths ago so I don't know if it had any more updates.
@Pedro, O Nykolas i mean they can rift and whammy bar all they want, engage in a orgy of rape murder and pillage and destroy half our population in an hour, but all that loud music woke up Daddy, and you picked the wrong train today you best believe that.
@@Rafael57YT I think so. Sometimes the crowd is silent and in the next moment they are screaming. Seems fake. Also, if you look at the audience, they are all chilling in their seats except for two rows of people standing in front of the stage...
Off stage vs on stage persona. Very common in musicians actually. Actors, musicians and artists in general are often introverts and they just have to turn it on when they are on stage, taking on an alternate personality.
Shred? There's absolutely nothing technical about what he plays. A chimpanzee could learn those 3 basic sounds to play in simple rhythms. Sounds cool and all, but is not shredding or much talent.
I honestly doesn't understand, why treat Mick so badly during Eternal development? The man who almost singlehandedly, not only bringing the best music awards to their game but also the core and unseparated aspect of it, The "DOOM Music"
