The best thing about this clip Ronny - you’ve finally featured a truck - that is actually a truck - that can be called a truck !! 😆 Now this, for all those others who call their Patrol, their Cruiser, their Hilux or their Navara a truck - THIS is a truck. Wow! What a truck. Yep, we can call it a truck, officially without concern. I used to build expensive toys for rich people - they would either never get used or they'd be abused. This is clearly different - a total passion project for sure, used and loved. I could always tell a lot about my customers based on how they cared for their stuff. All the comments about him being a spoiled rich kid - well, looks like he's a Hospitality exec - if you've ever managed anyone or anything - well, he's earned it. I'd love to have such a capable vehicle - my only fear is that the threshold for trouble is so high, once you are IN TROUBLE - you're doomed! A unimog is on my list - but a 78 series once we can get em here in the states will probably come first unless just the right one comes along :D Thanks for another great episode Ronny!
@craigkirby9202
@craigkirby9202 2 года назад
On the upside, you can easily just tow another vehicle as a spare. Or a house, and just decide you want to live wherever you get into trouble. I used to live in New Guinea, and there's a story there of trying to connect two villages by road. The problem was that one of the villages was full of folks who had never seen a Jeep. Each village started cutting a track towards the other, with the distant one using only a description of a Jeep, and a description of the kind of track it used. The end result was a trail with each wheel line taking different paths. Sometimes one wheel track was twenty feet higher than the other. Sometimes a little further apart. Now the story goes that they solved the problem by just cutting two poles and carrying a Jeep to the next village to drive it around for a bit so everyone could see what they were dealing with. But I'm an Australian, and any story like that can be taken with a grain of salt but I always wonder why people don't consider pulling things apart and moving them in more manageable chunks when they become inconsolably stuck. But then, I'm an Australian, so that might be bullshit as well :)

The 1300/1700 is just the horsepower, the 1700 runs a turbo und intercooler setup. The 1300 L with the 3250mm wheelbase is by far the most common, because that is the one the german military uses. I live about 40km from where these where build and about 10km from where the current model is build. If you are in the area, you should check out the unimog museum in Gaggenau. But don´t expect much offroading in Germany, expect for designated offroad parks.

A U1500 and U1700 are similar and older agricultural versions. The U1300L and U1700L are off road chassis. Also older but the U1300L is a 7.5T normally with 6 bolt axles and the U1700L is about 11t with 10 bolt axles. Sooooo many different versions. His engines basically changes his model to a U1550L37-240. The OM 366 LA is actually a 5.9L turbo intercooled engine which for fire service had up to 240hp and about 660lbft but tuning can get a bit more. First gear is 13:1 and low range is 5.76:1. Axle is probably 5.31:1 but could be 6.53 also.

Great video Ronny its always good to give folks a peek at just what a Unimog is capable of! I have a German Military 1300L and I collect a restore M series US military trucks and we have gone on trail rides with other members of our club, lots of military Jeeps and other M series 6x6 trucks dueces etc. We were driving up this small mountain on a road that was still all there it had a couple very small holes in it but really nothing when we got to the top you would have thought we climbed Mt Everest lots of the guys with the American trucks were locked in 6 wheel drive and the jeeps were in low range 4x4 and they were hoping that we never went anything as rough as that was. One of the guys asked me what gear I ran my Unimog in through the "rough" stuff and I told him I stayed in 3rd gear and never even thought about using 4 wheel drive. One word of advice is that if YOU own a Unimog and you go 4 wheeling with other people (Unless there is another Mog there) you will be on your own in case you ever do get stuck, because there is not another vehicle that will ever get close to you!
@net-twin-de
@net-twin-de 3 года назад
What many always forget to mention is that the Unimog can be used as an actual workshop at any time and anywhere. You can use all air pressure power tools (they are even cheaper to buy than the electricity-based ones). So you can restore your car in the middle of nowhere if you want and you don't run out of fuel :)

Congratulations Matt. A superb effort and project. I see you and your Missus look to be sharing wonderful experiences together and I’m hopeful you bring some decent kids into the world because we sure need them right now. A question. I’m wondering if this is a lifelong type hobby like some or is it genuinely an insurance policy considering what appears to be an ever increasingly unpredictable and untenable world. Do you work in the typical daily grind or have you gone into your own business venture to afford what is a solid bit of kit amongst other things. Obviously generally speaking. I’m a little older but questions of adventure always arise when I see UNIMOGS. They are always associated with success in my mind and what part did the Unimog play in your own development. Well done for bringing us this fine chap and remarkably capable, any mission ready vehicle. Favourite video for quite some years.

Thats a pretty sweet Mog setup. I like the design in the point thats its not as big as some of the 4x4 Mercedes hauler truck based adventure mobiles, and has a narrower wheelbase too. Most of the build 4x4 adventure trucks end up beeing too big to actually offroad which this one isnt. Guess im lucky beeing here in germany and having the oportunety to buy mogs directly in case i ever wanted to build something similar myself.

From my view since early childhood (proudly owning some SIKU- and Matchbox-Models of a Unimog), the proportions of this version are p-e-r-f-e-c-t :) Too many people think `offroad` in the beginning, but then they totally overload their `Little Mog` by installing giant cabins with nonsense luxury inside... Ej ! This car is quite different, well done, Sir... I wish you a lot of miles, full of joy and fun !
