Doone in this scene is not a girl looking for and accepting closure. It is not closure for them, it is reunion. Throughout the series and also in this scene, she is a strong girl fighting for her love. The way she hugged him was holding on, not letting go. No way that Doona will let go when she knows that he still loves her as much. That is obviously a happy ending.
@xionchen

I believed it is a happy ending as well. This is not a getting closure scene. It is a reunion scene. Also the short vignette at the beginning of episode 6-9 right after the opening music credits suggest they meeting together in Japan. Especially beginning of episode 9 with them meeting in the park (?) and him wearing the same tan overcoat as the ending scene.

Lol same. I'm still thinking bout it now. I feel like the guy should be the one chasing her. I don't feel satisfied that Doona has to be the one chasing him 😭😭😥😥😥😥😥 and reconciled. But someone has to step up, if not they will not be together eventhough they love each other. So I think Doona made the right decision.

@@NurulAin-f9hwell Won Jun is literally a man that girls dream of, very reserved, calm, and definitely a gentleman, sure Won Jun left Doona but you should also understand that Won Jun just want to support Doona in her career even if it costs their relationship and Won Jun was just thinking realistically, definitely the reason why Doona is yearning for him all these years because he is definitely that Man.

They are finally together not breakup, here is why: 1. The scenes just after opening song showing they both met in Japan at least twice, one Doona wore black outfit at a railway crossing and the other she wore checker hat in pink brushes... 2. Episode 7 where Wonjun asked Doona to say sorry and want him back then they made-up back together...Episode 9 they did the same thing but now was Doona's turn, then the result is the same as before. 3. The final scene where they encountered is cruial: Hilton Hotel of Ananti Cove Resort. That means Doona scheduled her stay in the same hotel where Wonjun will be there when he was assigned to work aboard (Japan). So they could be together in hotel at night when they both finished their own day works. 4. Episode 9 Doona and Wonjun both drinking at an open bar publicly after reunion, compared to where they needed to sit in a private room for dinning before breakup in railway platform, that means Doona was then free from idol contract and able to date whoever she want without public pressure.

I agree with your point 4, and that's why all assumptions about their secret relationship don't hold. Doona has long said that she's open about her relationship with Wonjoon, so why now, after so many years, would they need to hide? The only possible happy ending we could have is that after crossing paths at the mall, they rekindled something, and therefore the encounter scene at the train station (if it really exists in the diegesis) would be the true ending, possibly hinting at a reunion, or not... but in any case, this open ending would be easier to digest.

I like the series, and this was actually the second K-drama I had ever seen. I've realized why they are so popular. I, and from what I've read by so many other people, was really annoyed by the ending. LOL. At first I thought it was because it wasn't a happy fairy tale ending, but then realized the ending wasn't good or bad, just that the director wanted to leave it open ended. But what annoyed me most was all the conflicting easter eggs all along the drama.There were just too many unclear, contradicting and vague references that didn't provide any clarity but only clouded the story. Was Doona! just a memory of a past relationship, or a story about how some love stories can't work out because the 2 people are from different worlds or going in opposite directions? What was the director trying to say? He's a good director and not some hack, but I find myself not understanding the underlying "theme" of this story. I was more annoyed with that than the actual ending. If it was a memory of a past love, then it was an unresolved memory. And based on how Doona acted throughout the series, it is not in her personailty to let things lie. Also, you don't sit crying and contemplating in your apartment by yourself from dusk till the dark of night (hours) if you don't still feel something for that past love and have actually moved on. And you certainly don't keep his address after 4 years and drive across the city to bang on his door for just an apology and then move on when he let's his guard down and you turn the tables on him exactly the way he did when you "begged" for him back in an earlier time when you wronged him by leaving him standing and going off with your Manager. Clearly, Doona didn't move on and based on WJ's short (one word) answers to her when she tried to talk to him at the bar after they met up again, he was still angry. That's what people who are angry and don't want to talk about how they feel, act. If you no longer in love with someone anymore, you either act indifferent, or you generally act friendly and reminisce pleasantly together. WJ hasn't moved on. Heck, WJ even hoped that he could rekindle a relationship with Jin Ju previously after he thought she rejected him years earlier in High School. He sounds like a guy that wouldn't give up, easily. The different worlds and opposite directions argument doesn't hold a lot of water. She's a beautiful, sucessfull and famous singer and he's a good looking, well mannered, educated, professional. Her job is to entertain people and his is to improve the world. Would her fans be so against this guy? Are they really worlds apart? They both said at different times in the series, that they "wanted it all" they "wanted more". Seems like they have a very similar mindset. They both seem very driven in having their careers, it's not like WJ let his heartache interfere with his aspirations. He was disciplined enough to not let his schoolwork suffer, and all the while working and paying for his education. The guy has goals too, it's not just her...

Although in the Webtoon series it was a sad ending but this Netflix version is obviously a happy ending. I don’t know about you but I’ll be damned if crying hard for your ex even after 5 years of separation is anything but love! Both Doona and Wun Jun are still waking emotional time bomb for each other when they meet again. Once you found the love of a lifetime your life will never be the same again. Even Doona came down from heaven to see Wun Jun and they’re not even arguing who love less and more but why they can’t be together. In the end they just can’t stop their feelings and confessed their misery to each other. Doona explicitly said it that she redeemed herself because of her relationship with Wun Jun and now that she’ back at the pinnacle of success she doesn’t need any man anymore because of Wun Jun. Simply mean Doona doesn’t want any man but Wun Jun because at her level of fame there’s no man there that can come close to the quality of Wun Jun that she fall in love with. My 10 cent worth as 50s something married man with two kids for 20 years. 😅

@@KP-ky1sn Oh come on, don’t tell me after confessing feelings to your girlfriend you want her to dump you right then and there? Wun Jun tearfully admitted his mIstake for breaking up with Doona and he is simply being pathetic for saying those “oh I’m an idiot man please leave me I’m useless!” 😂 People who are in love sometimes do silly things without them realizing it. Fortunately, Doona was equally stupidly in love in that level that she takes Wun Jun’s “leave me alone” as “please don’t torment me anymore, take me back I beg you!” 😆 and she did replied with how she missed him so much. Of course, don’t get me wrong I’m talking only about the series not real life. In reality, they’d probably end up getting divorce in the long run.

On the other hand, cant really blame her cause they are both at the time of their lives where uncertainty is certain and their careers are yet to be made but still, he didn't deserve being the scapegoat of her instability.

He also left like that for her to become an idol…Sure he did for her sake but she did fight for him..He did what the others did to her…he abandoned her..She hates that the most…He could have supported in her career too…He did kinda contradict himself…He himself said that he should have fought for them..She said she would wait for him till his military service gets completed and was still in love with him…sure she was unstable but she tried her best to develop and change despite all the hardships thrown her way(grooming,stalking, harassment,manipulation, depression,abandonment)…And at the worst time…her career came where she really finally gained her confidence back to want to sing(she knows only that..she must do that sometime ) plus she was forced too because of the contract…the penalty is too high….She changed in the end….in this scene…you could see that but she still loved him…she did wrongs too but she tried to make up for it and apologised and regretted it..WJ is a green flag and deserves support too but so does Doona…WJ wasn’t super clean either and neither was Doona a red flag..their circumstances were like that! Each one did what they thought was right(it was the best decision acc to them)…in the end,maybe they didn’t patch up because the relationship was too painful or maybe they did patch up because they already went through hell and could fight now strongly through all hardships and are stable in their career too! It was open ending and it’s upto one’s own interpretation! This is just my perspective…I just don’t think Doona is a bad person at all..they both deserved each other

As a native Korean speaker, I am sure it is a 100% happy ending, but the director might have added a little twist for some people who want to make up their own ending. When Doona says 'I don't need you in my life anymore', it doesn't mean that she doesn't need Won Joon. It means more like 'I want you but not because my life still desperately needs someone'.

@@nzstarful I don't see it that way because throughout the entire series Won Jun is always pushing her away, right up until the end. Posted many months ago, but accidentally deleted: The final "Happy Ending" is very clear to me: the penultimate (second-to-last) scene before they cut to both of them being in Japan, Doona returns to Won Jun and they clearly make up. She went out of her way to run to him to ask him to say (1) he's sorry, (2) he regrets not chasing after her and allowing them to drift apart, and (3) he says he's missed her after she first says "I missed you". The emotion is clearly "lovey dovey" and the camera even pans a bit to the left (where the bed is located). He is very happy when shopping in a cake store in Japan and obviously they've synchronized their calendars to be at the same place. The fact that they are walking in opposite directions is only a metaphor that each is doing his or her own thing (she's an idol, he's now a Civil Worker) BUT they are doing different things in the same geographical location: that is, they are no longer separated by space or time. They merely have different jobs and both of them were very private people anyway, so it's okay that they keep their relationship secret for the sake of her career. She herself said that she had planned to work for a few years enough to make money so she wouldn't be worried financially (this happened when she tried to convince him in an earlier episode to remain together even while he went to serve in the military). Logically, there is also NO reason in the world for two lovers who never stopped loving each other, never cheated on each other, and already said they are sorry to each other and have missed each other (with tears and a deep amorous hug to boot) will end up breaking up. They would end up in that bed located next to them that the camera pans towards as they hug in Won Jun's bedroom/apartment, which Doona went out of her way to visit after she had already returned back to her luxurious apartment after first visiting Won Jun and cried upon seeing the sunset, which reminded Doona of the morning sun she watched with Won Jun the morning after they had made love in her childhood (grandmother's) country home. She felt empty without him. Personality-wise, it's also consistent that Doona is not the type to give up on love. Even though her manager didn't treat her well, she was hooked on him like an addict (there's the suggestions he's both a father figure and perhaps lover, but married, and thus not free to be with her; she even patterned her smoking habit to mirror her manager's chain-smoking). Doona even runs into the street shoeless on her birthday after the manager has left her a birthday present without saying hello. Doona has a great need to feel real deep love she has never felt from a father she never had and a mother who abandoned her. Her manager gave her a career as a child so she was fixated on him. But the way Won Jun looked at her and treated her was "tender" and a "profound love." He also never betrayed Doona.He was hurt that Doona ran off with the manager, though she returned to Won Jun, after Doona chose Won Jun over the manager. Doona's personality, craving a real love and someone who would never abandon her, would not be the type to let a loving Won Jun go. She also knows that they are both similar: both are very private, both have loved a person with what they perceived was unrequited (unreturned, or at least, not fully returned) love. But in each other, they have similar, yet different, deep love that will never betray. Plus they are hot for each other physically. So clearly they are keeping their relationship secret. When Doona looks back towards Won Jun, there is not look of "surprise" on her at all. She knows he's around. And he was smiling while there. Clearly, they were going to hook up later. In a few years, celebrity Doona would announce -- as many idols have done (e.g. NS Yoon -- see my Wikpedia note on NS Yoon. I contributed the part about Same Bed, Different Dreams 2 and her husband) that she has married a non-celebrity she has dated for years and thank her fans for her loyalty. That is the sequel not filmed here, but we know that will happen. Yes, it was a metaphorical ending, but not an open-ending. It's clear that they are hiding, even to us. The filmmakers won't even reveal to us that they are secret dating because that's how private Doona and Won Jun will be about their dating. It will be their private happy world. Happy ending!! Others here have correctly commented that the metaphorical ending where they are hiding their relationship points to how idols and actors are forced to suffer in their private lives by having to hide that they are dating. In that sense, the end scene elicits our compassion and unstated argument against this regrettable situation that not only affects the idols and actors, but their beloveds. In the case of Doona and Won Jun, however, they can bear it happily because they've resolved their relationship into a happy union. They survived his military separation and her being an idol and busy. Won Jun waited for his first love his entire live, and it is clear from the scene when he sleeps with Doona, that it was his first time. He saved himself for when he would fall in love. And Doona was the right woman for him to share his soul and body with. She, though apparently not a physical virgin (she took charge in the lovemaking scene, and she picked up a guy in a bar, which hinted at that she's done so before, and it seems she's slept with her manager/father-surrogate), was a spiritual virgin. She had never made love to a man who loved her equally, until Won Jun. Again, there's no way this couple would ever leave each other when they both are super nice and love each other. It just wouldn't happen. He was okay with her career and she with his. And they are clearly coordinating their schedules to be at the same place and time. That's love:making the seemingly untenable irreconcialble schedules and lifestyles synchronize. In time, they will be together in a more normal way. But what is "normal" anyway? Isn't love always a compromise turning uncertainty into a win-win? Addendum on October 23, 2023: The fact that the ending is to be interpreted as a metaphor is signaled at the beginning of episode 1, where Doona is shown to be "drowning" as she simultaneously performs on stage. Since she is not literally drowning, yet they show her falling into water and being submerged (swallowed up) by water, that's a key that there are figurative/symbolic moments in this drama. And as so happens in literature and movies/dramas, there is often a "frame" structure at work. Here the frame that in an otherwise "realist" movie (I am speaking of literary realism as a movement, not the everyday sense of the word: in literary realism the story, whether print or film, attempts to mirror the verisimilitude ("realness") of life -- instead of being realist, the start and end of the drama (episodes 1 and 9) begin and end with metaphor. But whereas Doona was drowning in the opening of episode 1, in episode 9 she confidently walks around, interacting as idol with her fans, dutifully accomplishing her work. And that's because in her life (and in Japan), she has her love. Thus after showing us they've made up, the director metaphorically shows that although the world of the idol is still plagued by a lack of freedom, having someone to share one's life helps make it a bit bearable. The drama is called DOONA, and begins showing only Doona, but later we see both Doona and Won Jun in a "long shot" together in space and time, though each is working their respective jobs. See above for more details about this end scene.Addendum #2 on why the ending is in one sense "sad" though the two are happy in a secret relationship: I certainly would have handled the ending differently, and like others here, personally prefer a clearer, less metaphorical and happier ending. Even if Doona and Won Jun have found true love and are sharing/at-least-partially-enjoying a secret relationship, such a situation arguably is NOT happy, since it's straining for poor idols and actors to have to hide their love. In that sense, we may perhaps speak of the ending as "successful" rather than "happy" insofar as the drama showed how even people in mutual love are forced to suffer due to current Kpop anti-dating rules by companies and CEOS, and by overintrusive so-called STANS/FANS, who often descend into stalkerdom and uncaring views about requiring their FAVS to be unattached so they could enjoy fantasizing about one day dating them, or whatever reason they are against idols and actors they allegedly love to date and marry. Fun to think about alternative interpretations. I get that. But I do believe they are happy at the moment we see them at the end of episode 9, and thus, I stick to my intepretation that they are a couple enjoying a secret relationship. Addendum 3: In ep. 1 (from 42'12" mark to the end; I fixed a typo re: the second time) we learn that this story is told as a flashback from Doona's point of view, and later also Won Jun's flashbacks. Hence the end scene in episode 9 is not the end scene in the story, it is actually the beginning, so the story is told in a chronological loop. Another reason this was a happy ending. In fact, that the author/writer are playing with "time" is underscored that this scene of Doona walking to take a seat in class next to Won Jun is repeated twice in succession. Doona at 43'23" calls their meeting an act of destiny. That, my folks, are positive words told in flashback.Postscript: After reading so many of your kind comments, I wished to gift you one of my "for fun" RU-vid Kpop playlists (I've got others) I put together over the years. I added three of Miss A's BOPs at the top to honor Suzy and the other Miss A members, who already showed great acting talent. Like the Chad manager of Doona says, life is not some bullshit about reincarnation or destiny; sometimes, people just encounter and then leave - it's just life. They came from two different worlds, two anomalies not supposed to encounter: while she lives a warm, shiny, and glamorous life, the dude has to deal with cold loneliness and poverty. For me, not knowing exactly if they met again in the end or not is the best ending.

For people unfamiliar with K-Dramas, I think part of the secret to their popularity is the number one traditional values. People are sick and tired of perversion and political ideology 😊 I mean when did boy meets girl they fall in love, become evil, and incarnate, yet in Hollywood, that storyline is toxic 😂 So besides traditional story telling they do it really well. In fact in my opinion I would put K-dramas up against anything coming out of Hollywood ❤

Nope! Where was she when he needed support with his mom and sister? She told him she loved him and he never said it back. Hmmm. They both needed a healthy series of therapy before they could date anybody...Doona more-so. She clearly had daddy and abandonment issues. Won-jun had self esteem issues. To me, this was a classic case of Won-jun breaking the 80/20 rule. Jin-joo was the clear 80% and Doona was the 20%. Jin-joo came clean to Won-jun about her feelings and why she hid them from him. She had good reason and if his head wasn't up in the clouds, he would have picked up on it. Sis even had the emotional maturity to properly remove herself from the situation after she was rejected so she could heal and she told him about it to his face instead of just ghosting him. That's someone ready for a healthy relationship and something worth fighting for. It was not too late for them if he'd let himself think with his head AND his heart. The series ended and he still barely knew anything about Doona. But he saw the 20% in Doona - the feistiness and allure and mistook it for love when it was pure lust. Doona is like the feral cat they keep showing in the episodes, the feral cat will never be happy as a house cat and will always try to escape to the outdoors if the door is left open. Doona lived her young life as a loner without friends living with her grandmother in the country. Her mother dumped her to be raised by her grandmother. At a young age she is groomed by the greedy manager to sing and dance; to perform before a crowd. Won Jun wanted a normal life and enjoyed just living with the simple joys that life has to offer like a good meal with someone you love at the end of a hard work day. He could never live in the spotlight world of Doona and would have been miserable and Doona couldn’t life outside of the spotlight of being in the center of the world stage. Like the feral cat that Won Jun fed and tried to tame, the feral cat scratched his hand when he tried to pet it, he couldn’t tame Doona and make her live in his world.
