My 'Door Ajar' light stayed on occasionally after closing all the doors. This is how to fix it. As Always, if this video Saved You Time: Please Spend a Few Minutes with the Sponsors.
Worked on my 2010 Toyota Sienna! I used WD-40 White Lithium Grease, which is thicker and will keep the door hinge lubricated longer. I also use it on squeaky door hinges at home and on noisy roof air vents. Thanks for the video, very much appreciated! Thank you for saving us $$$
My truck did the same thing with all door lights and dome light staying on when all doors are closed. Did exactly as you stated and sprayed DW-40 and it worked. Thank you, sir! You’re a life saver!
Life saver. I drive a 2001 ford ranger with an extended cab, so i actually have two doors on one side. I did this on the main door, and the problem was still there. I opened the interior door (both must be opened to access the back seat/area) and sprayed the latches on the top and bottom of the interior door. Shut and opened that door a bunch, then got in and tried it again. Absolutely no light, and more importantly, no mind-erasing, constant DING!!!! I didn't have to slam the door with all of myself, either. Thank you so much for this fix.
Thanks a bunch! Worked like a charm. I was worried myself sick about having to pay a mechanic to look at it and turns out a simple RU-vid search fixed my problem. Thanks for saving me a couple hundred bucks!
I've had a similar problem. My door ajar light would turn on and off while I was driving causing the cabin light to turn on and off as well. Finally had to just turn the cabin light off. I took it to the dealership and they said they would need to run a $110 diagnostic on the electrical system to see why this was happening. I said I'd wait on that. Came home found this video and did exactly like in the video on all my doors and trunk, then drove it for several miles. NOT ONCE did the door ajar light come on. It should've been flickering like a disco but didn't turn on at all until I actually opened the door. Thank you so much for saving me time at the dealership (2 hours for the diagnostic) and the $110.
Thank you SO MUCH!! This just saved me so much money. The dealership would have charged me big bucks. I bought a $10 can of WD40, and voila! No more door ajar light! My dome light goes out, the car alarm sets, and my battery is not being drained. You are a life saver!
Worked perfect the 1st time, sprayed it closed the door and the light went out I've been putting up with this for a few weeks but I didn't realize the inside door lights were staying on awesome man thank you.
Awesome...worked like a charm...A lot of times people think the sensor failed but in fact it's down to maintenance. I'm one of them and have actually done the same for the latches on the doors, but never thought it would affect the dome light--maybe cause old cars just had some push button in the hinge area! Thank you!
That was it, your a genius. After months of waiting ten minutes on my drive to work in the morning for my damn dome lights to shut off, ten seconds and a can of good old water displacement formula 40. Cripes I tried everything short of new doors. Thanks man. Thanks a lot.
Thank you VERY much! This solved my problem. Dome lights were always on, as was the door ajar light when the truck was running. It was the passenger door on my 2000 Ford Explorer Sport. I lubed the driver's door and back hatch too, as preventative maintenance, and they all close much nicer now as an added bonus.
Thanks for this video. I had an additional twist - I lubricated the driver and passenger door latch and actuated it many times but it didn't fix the issue. My ranger has suicide doors and these have an upper and lower latch. Well the lower ones were very gunked up and hard to move....a thorough lubrication and cleaning has solved it!
I gotta give you props, this actually worked. I had my doubts at first but it was worth a try and it worked! Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Beautiful! 👍🏼
How cool is that!!!!! I thought it was time to replace the security/remote start system because we could not activate the system due to the dome lights staying on constantly. Noting that the "Door Ajar" light also stayed on during driving, I gave this little tidbit of info a try and everything is fine now. A few shots of WD in each catch, close & open several times, and all is fine. 2003 Ford Explorer XLT. THANKS SO MUCH!
It's perfect! The problem just started yesterday and I'm so happy to find this video on Christmas day! You are a blessed man for sure for making this video and helping others
My 03 Ford Taurus had the same problem, when I closed the door the ajar light stayed on. After I sprayed some wd-40, the problem was fixed. Thank you for this video!
Thanks i own a 2003 explorer i did this it turned off my ajar light and my dome light is working perfect now i just have to fix the crack in my thermostat housing what a great 4x4 its top shape i have owned it 2 years as a winter vehicle goes through any snow very comfortable decent on gas tows my boat great for camping perfect for family buy one you be happy u did
Thanks fot the Video. Some people don't realize, WD is not a lub, it's a penetrant. your right to hit it with WD but then hit it with silicone dry lub.
Thanks for the info it helped. This is what happened and what I did. The door ajar light was lit when the doors were closed which also kept my cabin internal lights on. This drained the battery. Luckily I own a portable power source, (something I highly recommend) so no problem turning the engine back on. My research shows that the drivers door is usually the first culprit. I decided to degrease it first using 91% isopropyl alcohol spray into the door locking mechanism (just a small amount, possible fire hazard). I open and close the door 10 times quickly. Problem solved! Took a little WD-40 spritz the door locking mechanism just in case. Thanks everyone on RU-vid and the internet for suggestions, You’re great!!
Thanks, this quick and easy fix corrected the problem I had with my 2007 Chrysler 300. It did not work right away, but by the next morning the problem was corrected.
Just tried this on my 2002 Ford Windstar. The door ajar symbol randomly comes on and off, and I've had problems with battery drain even though I turned the dome light off. Today, it was on and not going off, so I tried the WD-40.......BAM! It's off. I hope it stays that way. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks A BUNCH man. I owe you one. Didn't have any wd40 so i had to try dawn soap and sure enough…it worked! haha life saver man its like 10 30 and all of a sudden…time for the alarm to trigger constantly..now I can sleep! and the neighborhood too lol
Worked like a charm on my 2003 F-150 Supercrew. I had pulled the fuse before doing some googling and found this trick elsewhere. I had no WD-40, but PB Master Blaster worked great too. I suspect any kind of good liquid lube would work.
I truly thank you I was getting so frustrated tonight my dash kept saying door ajar and lights wouldn't go off but ur video helped me big time.thanks💯💯💯
It worked for me too, only after I kept the engine running. That tidbit made the difference. My 2000 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer AWD is ready to be sold. *sniffle*
My car was just doing this. I disconnected one of the poles on my battery to save it from draining. Watched the video, then went back to try to fix it. Connected my battery back and strangely, it wasn't doing it anymore. But thanks a lot for the vid for future reference.
Had this same issue with my 2002 Ford Ranger XLT. I did as the video said, but I had no luck. I was going to wait for my father to come home and see if he had any ideas, but as I went to move my car, the “door ajar” symbol went away. Not sure what really happened here, but maybe the WD 40 just had to do its work for me. Otherwise, my issue has been resolved and all is well. Thanks again.
Thank you, thank you , thank you. My dome light goes off now and I don't have to hear that darn alarm bell keep on ringing until it decides to turn off.
Thank you! This problem started today on my 1998 Ford Ranger and I figured the switch was shorted or sticking and had no idea where it was located. I followed your instructions and by the 2nd or 3rd close of the door the light went out.
Just did that to all 4 of my doors just incase and it works and it also reminds me that i need to wash my door jams and latches too. Helps keep them clean.
On my F-150 crew cab the right rear door ajar light wasn't going off. My problem was the wiring harness in the door jam. Pulled back the rubber boot, checked the wires, mine were brittle and broken, On 2011 mind you. Ford said this is common from the doors opening and closing, the speaker wire was frayed to. The dealership wanted $358. Good luck all.
Not really a comment type of person, but I had to say THANKS for the tip. This helped out in many ways such as, saved my battery, time, and money very quick fix I would advise try this method first.
Yeah the same problem with the door light stays on the down side of this ! Is that at night time driving with the head lights on all the interior lights stay ! I can turn them down but not off and you loose your dash lights as well . any more tips thanks for listing tk
thanks man super helpful, my dome light stayed on due to door ajar light and this fixed it it like 20 seconds. I have a 2001 ranger and now the doors work perfectly
Tryed spraying the switch on my 2013 edge with electrical cleaner and it worked for a little while then the problem recurred. Took it to the dealer yesterday and they replaced the switch for free because Ford did a voluntary recall on them.
Thank you so much. The driver door hinge was really gooey and once i sprayed the hell out of this and shut the door a few times afterwards it seems to be helping. i'm still going to check out the decoding of the fuse box just in case this doesn't work. The interior lights stay on when the door adjar light comes on also so maybe this fix will stop that also. Fingers crossed.
i dont usually comment on videos but i am going to for this one just to say thank you for this quick tip it solved my problem in just a couple mins. :)
Worked on my 99 ranger supercab! Thanks. My switch was sticky so I was pretty sure this would help. My door ajar light would stay on for about 15 seconds before going out. It was pretty funny because my alarm beeps twice when locking the door and if the door is open it will only beep once. I went to the store and when I was trying to lock it I would only get one beep. The doors were locked and the alarm was on but no second beep. I figured it would be fine since it's locked. As I was walking away 10 seconds later I hear a the second beep in the distance. I figured my truck was just a little slow because it's 20 years old. I thought that was pretty funny. Thanks for the tip though.
Gracias al Video explicativo y a las sugerencias se resolvió el problema de las luces dentro y afuera del vehículo que permanecían encendidas todo el tiempo y al w40.
Hell yes this works and thanks bud gotta go do it again today it works for about 2 years and it will happen again but it works still thanks again man keep up the good work
I had this problem a year ago on my '03 Ranger. Now, exactly one year later, its doing it again. This time it seems as though the WD40 didn't work. The only common denominator for me is, one year ago it was cold, damp and rainy. One year later, its cold damp and rainy and I park it in the garage. Its fine once I start it, but once I hit a bump, its a long 10 minute drive home and to work. I think a trip to the Ford dealer is in order.
I tried electrical contact cleaner and it worked the first time I shut the door. Than it came back door ajar and dome light. Well I had both on to begin with a 95 ranger. I will take door panel off and give it a better shot of the same tomorrow when its light out. so I know it will work.If need be I will change out the sensor. thanks for the vid .
Our 2004 Taurus has this weird problem of the Passenger Door Ajar coming on when the car is first started and driven. After it warms up the alarm becomes intermittent. After say 30 minutes the alarm quits coming on. When the alarm does sound the dome light comes on also. I am going to try the wd40 in the lach fix and pray that it does trick...
Sadly this didn't fix my issue. The issue with the rear driver's side door started when the car was hit from behind. It may have misaligned the body of the car a bit and then the door wouldn't shut right - it would shut, but you had to force it kind of hard and slam it. Now, 2 years later and I just went outside to close it and the light stays on no matter how hard I slam it. I tried the WD-40 and closing it multiple times but nothing happened. It feels like it's closing differently, also I hear some metal dinging whenever I close it or fiddle with a little, which didn't happen before this issue sprung up. Oddly enough, the door closes much easier now... almost too easy. But it still locks when you lock the doors. But now I can't use my remote lock - I have to lock it from the inside or use the key because remote lock won't let you lock it without all doors being closed.
