I had a lightbulb moment when you explained sanding down the heavy droplets of paint. Now I know how vinyl grain is done the right way. Who needs a grain pad? Not me 😂

I'm not a technician, merely a car owner who has learned so much about the kind of quality work that can actually be done by those who work in your field. Thank you for your honestly, and for teaching even people like me what to watch out for.

Thank you for commenting. It's high time that the public became aware that better quality repairs can be done. I hope the public and the dealerships will begin to hold repair technicians to a higher standard.

@@a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247 Yes indeed, I went out today and got a spray gun so I could try my hand at some texture matching and some bumper repair.

Great video, learned quite a bit and have an even bigger appreciation for the pros that do these sorts of repairs! The musician analogy was also spot on, I know from doing house wallboard textures it's about technique vs. some magic spray in a can . I am so glad I found this since I was not liking the commercial texture sprays in a can I was finding, which appear targeted mainly for bumper cover textures. I just bought a double DIN center console bezel for my 2002 Corvette and it is smooth flat black rubberish coating instead of the grained and deeper black of OEM. I have spray equipment and have done my share of bodywork in restoring >30 cars, so would like to know more about these water-based materials you used for this repair and where to get them.

Thank you, Mike. There was room for a good many instructional points in this repair. Not all will be welcomed by those in the business, however. But if I can demonstrate that it actually works...!

Nice! Flex-Tex is amazing and sure has its place in making repairs. Excellent work, as usual. BTW, I’d say $225 for your work done on that door panel is more than fair. It’s that or $1,200. I think the choice is pretty easy to make. Thanks for the video!!

I know you can take SEM chip guard and bounce it off a spray card to change it, but I agree they stay soft for way to long.

Another question...Would it be better to make a new rubber grain pad for this job.....???

I know you didn't use one, but would it be better quicker to make a grain pad? Thanks
@a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247
@a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247 4 года назад
You could using a cold method but as I explained in the video, the hot method bleeds away the grain from the factory vinyl. That's part of the problem to begin with. You would chase it all over the panel. The cold method is an unnecessary step because, in the end, the only way to blend that on a highly visible panel is to construct a sprayed grain pattern. That is the whole purpose of the video, to break away from older, less effective methods. Thank you for the question. That gave me opportunity to explain in more detail.

Big fan of your work and videos. Is it possible to create what you are doing with the paintgun with an airbrush?!
@a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247
@a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247 4 года назад
In my experience the airbrush is not going to give you as much control over the texture. But if I only had the airbrush I'd sure do a test spray! Also in the business the airbrush is too small for most jobs. Thanks!

@checkemail6216 4 года назад
Brilliant work. Do you spray top clear finish to lock/protect the color from damages?
@a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247
@a.r.t.srealrepairsforrealc8247 4 года назад
Yes, most of the time. In this instance I did not. The plastic binder base coupled with crosslinker is mostly indestructible. If I was spraying with the softer leather base then I would be concerned with possible raindrops distorting the pigmented coating. In that case a clear topcoat with additional slip and crosslink would be called for. Then raindrops would be repelled and would not be allowed to soak into the pigmented layer causing a migration of pigments, hence spotting. Good question, thanks.

Great video! Any alternative methods?
@crazyantny9161
@crazyantny9161 Год назад
This basically is the waterbourne alternative to those vinyls and aresols. My friend, if you have time follow this guy. He's a true craftsman. You could do this with vinyl and say, SEM Texture. It's noticeable if you don't do the same sanding as you go to build the texture that you are after. The difference is this will take you a few hours vs a few days. I mean you can use a heat gun with the other method, just stay far away and keep it on low
