There were so many journalists that the cops were unable to do anything to save some hostages (of which a few were killed), and it led to a debate over how such events should be portrayed for the public.

I assume the inspiration for the song and the video was a true crime. In 1988 there was a bank heist in Germany (Gladbeck), after which the perpetrators fled and took hostages. During the escape, journalists conducted several interviews with the perpetrators and obstructed police work. After 54 hours of flight through almost half of Germany, the perpetrators were caught. Two hostages and a policeman were killed. The behavior of the journalists, who hindered the work of the police due to their close proximity to the events, later sparked an intensive public debate. In the video Rammstein seems to provoke media attention by the heist, not primarely to steal money. The line "Wir wollen in Beifall untergehen." (We want to drown in applause.) indicates it. It's a condemnation of mass media's willing co-optation by demagogues, the authoritarian and narcissistic impulses of charismatic leaders (It literally says I want to control you), the public's uncritical acceptation of evil people just because they're famous. And as a parallel to that there's a lot of self-criticism in there, the power that a world-famous band has over it's audience and the fans and media's willingness to look away from certain things. Oh, and it's one of the most simple and effective festival bangers that you absolutely have to experience live.
There are making of videos for these with english sub titles but they are over 30 mins long but are super interesting and worth watching even if you cant react to them. They explain so much .the best live version of this is from Hurricane festival 2016 superb ❤
Rammstein always has amazing and thought provoking music videos. The first time i saw one of their music videos it left a deep impression. Great reaction But the first music video where I appreciated the videography was Prodigy Smack My B*tch Up. Unfortunately Prodigy are really protective of their music so a reaction is not possible but it is still worth watching.

I think initially this music video was not played much or at all, because it was released shortly after 9/11. Flake being kind of a suicide bomber and all that made it feel less "tasteful".

Had they scheduled to release it later, then it might never have seen the light of day. Just like the video for Das Modell. That video was shot in the summer of 1997, and it's plot revolved around a model being chased around by paparazzis. It was scheduled to be released in the fall of 1997, but it got scrapped after Princess Diana's death in August that year. Now the video sits in a vault in Berlin, never to be shown to the public.
Yeah, probably nothing will go off with them anytime soon. Those accusations will stick in peoples heads. (I'm not up to date, so I can't say anything about what's going on with that right now, actual fans of Rammstein will know more about it.. I'm not into them eventhough the style would fit in my preferred music style). For example Sharon Kovacs who did a collab with Till (Child Of Sin) to process her childhood ab*se said he was always respectful towards her also refuses to do any lives with him as long as those accusations are not resolved and this will probably take some time . Kovacs is a very unique singer, she backed off from her label and is now an indipendent artist. I like her.

Hello there. Great reaction The song live is fantastic. The song/video is a criticism on the media/press, how they make tons of money on tragedies and crime like a a bank robbery.(this was filmed,before social media). There was the "Gladbeck hostage" here back in the day, where the press behaved appallingly by interviewing the kidnappers in the getaway vehicle while the hostages were there. This was the first song that they made, where they truly made a comment on a contemporary topic, namely the rise of reality-tv and the attention-seeking from the participants. The song's lyrics mock the concept by repeating the phrase "Ich will", displaying the narcissism of people in reality-tv, their crazy demands, and their desire to control the narrative to put themselves in the best possible light. The video is a criticism of the press and media, who are more concerned with getting a scoop, and less concerned with good behavior. This also reflects the band's relationship with the press, which is rather bad, especially in Germany. The German press has repeatedly portrayed Rammstein as a band with a depraved and sick ideology on the far-right over the past 30 years (FYI, they are politically on the far left), as well as twisted and misquoted the statements made from the band in interviews, which is why the band rarely gives interviews anymore due to them not trusting the media to do their job properly. In the video, they flip everything 180 degrees, so the media absolutely loves Rammstein and allows them to control the narrative, portraying them as heroes, when they actually committed a bank robbery and then blew up the whole place. So instead of reporting the truth, the media blindly report a narrative that suits the band. Total opposite of the real world. So basically, the message from the song and video is: Stop wasting time binge-watching stupid reality-shows, and start demanding that the media start delivering critical high-quality reporting.

Saying Rammstein is on the far left is comically ignorant. Ramstein isn't far anything. They've gone on multiple times to express this. They despise political labels period. Rarely do people so neatly fall into the media categories of left and right. Genuine people typically aren't so black and white, and such labels are just to cause tribalism and division.
Til said in an interview most of his politics lean left. Someone on the radical far left wouldn't say something like that. Nothing he writes or does suggests he's "far" anything. Sounds like you are projecting your own wishing onto them because you like them. I've been listening to Rammstein since the mid 90s.

(If I'm wrong, please let me know) Far-left is not necessarily what most in the US would assume to just be the communist block from the Soviet days with limited degrees of freedom, as there are different fractions on the spectrum. Rammstein's band members are in a fraction of the far left called libertarian socialism (some would define this as anarchism or socialist anarchism), meaning that they both believe in great personal freedom to do whatever you want (which from a non-European North American perspective easily could be interpreted as what you would determine as liberal), while still adhering to socialist values with focus on the common good. Which is for instance why the band has such a flat hierarchy, so every decision has to be unanimous. Which is why it takes so long for them to release albums.. Rammstein is a band of six members, not just a lead singer. Collectively, they are all on the far left, some just more (or less) than others, as some of them are still members of a socialist party in Germany. Plus they all live in the part of Berlin called Prenzlauer Berg, and you don't live there unless you're leaning quite a bit on the left.. Just like their song Links 2-3-4 clearly indicates their political stand, and something they previously have stated explicitly in non-German interviews over the years. The following can easily be interpreted as bragging, showboating or trying to win a pissing contest on the internet. It's genuinely not meant to. It's just to demonstrate why I'm not just projecting my own wishful thinking onto the band just for liking them like you claim that I do, but why I actually know what I'm talking about. I've listened to Rammstein for over 20 years since 2001. I've been to almost 50 shows with them all across Europe. I have analysed their song lyrics for years in a historical context. Both in relation to common traits in East German literature, (where the writer's opinions had to be written implicitly to avoid censorship from Stasi, a style that since then has carried on to influence the band's song writing on their early work after the Wall came down), and in context to Till's love of Albert Camus' book "The stranger", which is the key to understanding the band's lyrics when they describe the depraved acts in songs like Heirate mich, Klavier, Wiener Blut, Hallomann, etc. I'm not projecting my own political views onto them (because they don't matter in this context), I've actually taken the time to take a deep dive into it and I've let my work be used by high school teachers to teach about modern European history. And to do that, it really helps to live in a country bordering Germany, to learn German from an early age, to have spent a lot of time in Berlin, to have common friends with the band and to actually have had the chance to meet the band members and talk with them on a few occasions.
