There are 100s of irish traditional tunes (dance tunes like reels/jigs/polkas are the ones I'm most familiar with) that use a Dorian sound and they sound very different from what's heard here. The most typical and simplest chord progression for these tunes involves switching back and forth between the Tonic minor and Subtonic (Flat 7th) major, several times per play-through of the tune.
It's about the center of gravity. In A Dorian, A feels like the center of gravity: the progression will start and end with Am. when it's G Major, the center of gravity is G.
Do all the modes start on the natural minor of the major scale? This was C major - a natural minor - insert Dorian ( raised 7). I thought that was harmonic form

For me, starting with chord construction is easier. Basically to form a chord you need 3 notes at the minimum. For example, you have the note C in piano. Then you count 2 white keys you have your 2nd note and then another 2 white keys apart you'll have your 3rd note to form a C major chord. If you want your C minor, move your 2nd note of the chord 1 step below to a black key. If you want a C diminished, form a C minor chord then move your 3rd note of the chord 1 step below to a black key
We know Maj scales. How is D dorian different from D maj? ..b3rd & b7th. That's the sound. Where to use it is another consideration. Keep it simple. This lesson was confusing. Sorry to criticze but we learn from each other. I meant well & you can tell me to mind my own business.
I actually thought you were playing earth song by mj with that chord progression. It sounds so similar but i guess its a coincidence due to the dorian mode
Actually, Dorian is halfway between the order of bright and dark modes, with Lydian the brightest and Locrian the darkest. So my bet is on Locrian as the "nastiest".
