I love that this song was originally written as a breakup letter to her alcoholism, but she said herself that others interpret it as a breakup song to someone and that everyone can interpret it the way it fits for them. She's such a damn good artist!!

This song is my new favorite! My abuser died not long ago and this song makes me so happy and sad at the same time. He was my stepdad and he hated me so much. I could almost feel that hate through the years even when I had no contact with me but his death set me free from that hate and I am so much lighter now. So grateful for music like this!

I’m so sorry you went through that. I’m happy you can feel that peace. I went through an abusive marriage and even though it was years after he divorced me when he passed away, all I could feel was like a wet heavy blanket was being lifted off my soul and felt a deep happiness and peace. Many people, I think, see these lyrics as breaking free from some abusive lover or something along those lines. For me, and I'm probably not the only one, it's how about depression and anxiety and other mental issues can 'chain you down'. To me, this song is like a cry of relief and liberation from getting out from the bottom of the well.

Dorothy may be singing about a old lover but for some people it's about mental issues or addiction. It all comes down to how the person listening to the song interprets it.
