www.gilhedley.com In this video Gil continues a discussion of the vagus nerve with particular attention to the spatial relations of the main vagal nuclei in the medulla oblongata, in order to dispel some confusion regarding the meaning of "dorsal vagus" and "ventral vagus" nerves, with reference to the work of Stephen Porges, Ph.D.

Haha I knew you would tolerate the "defacement" for the love of anatomical modeling! Thank you for all you bring to the world Sue!

Dude. Thank you. A distinction not articulated in the typical polyvagal conversation, but super helpful for us manual therapists who are intimately relating with these fibers, tissues, and structures. Bravo.

Oh my goodness I did get it thanks!. I actually got it, without having to watch five or six times. I'm feeling quite impressed with both of us at this moment Sir. Ambiguous means forward and dorsal means back.. just got to remember that the ventricles belongs with the ambiguous now 🧐

This is so helpful Gil. I'm a therapist working to make sense of of my client's experience as it relates to the body/nervous system. I appreciate your ability to combine anatomy and experience. Thanks!

Such an important distinction Gil. You are always so generous with your anatomy vidoes. Thanks for shining a light on our inner landscape. I love integrating fascia informed somatic movement with the vagus nerve. Your emphasis on the nuclei and their position in the Medulla Oblongata is incredibly helpful. 😊

It's amazing how if you don't know how you can spill out information that is.....well.....from what you don't know. Thanks Gil for giving this relational explanation so people can reference and perhaps LEARN something they can relate to others from wisdom. Cheers!

Thank you! It's been tricky chatting with therapists who are excited about Polyvagal Theory but I'm stuck on this concept of dorsal and ventral vagus nerve (me being a hands-on manual therapist). This helped so much to clarify that terminology! Much appreciation!

I have an additional question about polyvagal theory, they state the ventral vagus connects or relates to the face (in social engagement), but that isn't the pathway of the vagus nerve. Is he referring to a parasympathetic effect through the facial or trigeminal nerve, or something else I'm not aware of?
