The intro video for this game creeped me the fuck out. That DOS soundblaster card just burrows into your brain and down your spine with that creepy tune. The dozens of blinking lemming eyes and creepy paper lemming didn't help, and neither did the unrendered 3d props. *shiver* excellent.
Oh yes, this brings back fond memories ... nail-biting difficulty, a cheesy soundtrack and a general WTF feeling about what was going on. The indoor levels were really fucking my brain over good.
I got stuck on this ferris wheel stage. I had cheats let you play every stage though there was a space station one were you had to go through the entire stage in first person or "virtual lemming" mode that was really hard.
They do go splat, and they do explode. In this case, they don't splat, because they hit a trampoline, which bounces them up only to a safe height. There is also a certain height where non-floaters will need time to recover after falling, but survive nevertheless.
If only this could run natively on Windows 7 (64-bit)… I still have the disc, but it won't run. The closest I can get is with DOSBox, and even then, the game isn't quite like it was back on an IBM ThinkPad (Windows 98), when the icons' animations were down to the speed of the CPU. (But the laptop's sound card wouldn't work at all. I never knew why; I was too young back then.)
+Ben Roberts You can adjust the CPU cycles in DOSBox so getting the game to run with the right speed is only a matter of finding the right settings. Try 20000-30000 fixed cycles, dynamic core.
Wow, this looks horrendous. Never seen this game before. Loved the original, though. I don't think this even looks playable. Early 3D was not the best time.
The game doesn't actually look quite as bad as in the video. RU-vid does a terrible job at encoding low resolution uploads, the image quality is much worse than in the original video. That's why I've began resizing all my uploads to higher resolutions.
Yeah, I can imagine it being a bit less blurry, but I'm guessing the framerate and general look is no different? The gameplay itself seems like the worst part, it doesn't look well suited to 3D at all.
Phizzy Well, the game runs at 70 fps which is standard for VGA. As for the gameplay, I haven't really played this game as much as the 2D lemmings games. I think the gameplay of the 2D games is better but maybe the 3D just requires some more getting used to.
