Not going to lie, this moment of Pedro dying and the fleeing of the villagers has got to be, by far, one of the darkest moments in Disney history. Not only because it's based on true events (RIP to everyone who died in these terrible conflicts), but watching this honestly gives me old school Disney vibes. Back in the old days, Disney didn't shy away in depicting dark moments, like when Bambi's mom was shot. Or when Mufasa was killed on screen by his own brother, and Gaston and Frollo falling to their deaths. I think many can agree Disney kind of lost their touch a bit during the last decade. But starting with Coco, I feel like Disney is entering a second renaissance era of story telling.Raya was kind of a miss step due to sending mixed messages, but I think there's a chance the movies will get better from here.

Mirabel didn't have any gift because she is already THE GIFT. She's like THE CANDLE. Without her, the Casita and her family will be just normal house and people. The Candle symbolizes the family connection. If one is not included, the whole family will be affected. The Casita symbolizes home. If the family is broken, the home is also broken.

Also something interesting to add is that the song is called "Dos Oruguitas" spanish for Two Caterpillars, while Abuela and Pedro (the grampa) are the caterpillars Mirabel is the butterfly. Because the magic, the miracle, and Casita were created by love; the love that began with Abuelo Pedro when he sacrificed himself to protect and save the family that he loved. That's why love became the source of the magic surrounding Casita and everyone in the Madrigal family; so once it was threatened and the family began to come undone...that's when the magic started to fade and disappear. Mirabel ended up having the most special and important gift and power of all; bringing her family together and helping them to realize and remember that their love as a family is the real and true magic, gift, and miracle.

I found abuela very interesting… an old woman with a good heart and intentions, but full of deep hurts and a unique personal pain: her husband, her best friend, the man whom she truly loved, trusted and relied on… was taken from her, he was gone… but think about it: they were very young, they had only a few years together… only a few, not many … they robbed them from truly knowing each other, from growing together and from raising their family … they robbed the children from a father’s love and paternal figure …and they robbed her what cannot be bought with money nor gifts: their love relationship that lasts a lifetime. Basically, her perspective, her past and point of view changed everything in the movie for me, she was a single mother and leader of the community with a lot of pressure, that she kept herself busy and keep the appearance of being in control, when in reality she was in pain and felt weak. She was carrying a big burden, but thanks to Mirabel, she was able to open up and let go of the burden to a certain degree, she didn’t need to carry the pain alone.

Of course to lose her husband and be left with three babies to rise alone shoked her... But are you realizing that she had to leave everything behind, they had a home and it was burned, they had a town and the violence swallowed it... The pain that she is feeling now of course has relation with that terrible experience but she is afraid of having to live the same thing and not being able to do anything against that... What do you think is outside Encanto?... Violence, the movie is depicting the situation of Colombia at the beginning of the last century when civil wars started to make people to scape of their house or losing their children who would be recruited in armed and illegal groups... To have to lose everything again is what a lot of our grandparents had to live at that time, but if you don't understand this historical background it's harder to understand her.

@@user-ry1cc1im6f Of course I realized that later, now I know the background and overall picture, but I cannot mention every single detail, otherwise this would be an essay instead of a short comment LOL Yes, many have lost everything, Abuela lost a lot like them, but she had a lot of miracles and blessings in the form of the candle, gifts/powers, a living casita, but most of all, a caring family whom takes care of her... yet I'm saying her personal biggest pain THAT WE ALL CAN UNDERSTAND is: the death of the love of her life, especially a young love. Losing your partner, your half, your true love is painful beyond compare. Nothing can bring him back. Casitas can be rebuild, but people have one life only.

@@japtakito8551 indeed you looked quite interested on this character and since you tried to do an analysis about her I added this very crucial detail that is necessary to have a better view of how deep is this movie indeed... Of course a lot of people may not feel related to that problem, but it's the reality of thousands of people in the world right now, maybe we can try to understand the pain that is not related to us, and open our eyes to those realities that we ignore... It may be material for an essay indeed haha... I recommend the documentary called "Ciro y yo", it's about a real man who lived what this character showed, it's particularly interesting that the river that appears in Encanto (Caño Cristales) is the same place where Ciro's story began... I strongly recommend it. Thanks for this nice conversation!

@@user-ry1cc1im6f And that is something a lot of americans don´t understand. I've seen many people being angry because Alma was forgiven, and yes it was pretty rush and whatever but they also had to understand the context of Colombia at that time, she's not a crazy grandma who wants everything perfect to keep appearances cause she cares about what other people think. Shes a grandma who knows a whole town depends of her family to be secure, she knows without their gifts Encanto (the town) would be victim of violence. She saw her husband being murder in a very violent way, of course shes gonna be terrified. Yeah she was a jerk and I don't justify her actions, but Colombia's refugee situation is complex and so is Alma's conflict.

For those who doesn't speak spanish, "dos oruguitas" means literally "two little caterpillars": A metaphor about the adaptability to changes, even the cruel ones. I cried so much with this scene. People were saying that Abuela had been forgiven too easily, but the message of this film wasn't about letting someone off of their mistakes in a snap. It's about sympathy and understanding. It's difficult for me to hate my grandmother who's always been so strict and so close-minded when I know that these traits are only a product of everything she's gone through. Her wounds are yet to heal. She's still bleeding. It doesn't mean that all her wrongs are okay, but it does remind me that she wouldn't be like this if she had grown up in a healthy environment that allowed her to be herself. This film is not about holding people accountable. Most POC families don't do that. It's about swallowing that pill, and being brave enough to break that cycle, all the while showing care and compassion to those who had not been able to bare this mindset before. It's tough work, but it's love. True familial love. Sobbed so hard during this sequence. Encanto has to be one of my most favorite Disney films to date.

This was something I noticed and thought was very interesting also. You don't think too much about it after she explains it in the beginning because Abuela still feels it's her burden to carry, no one else's. Every single familly in Colombia has stories of their abuelos and abuelas fleeing from violence, leaving their home and everything they had to find a better and safer place. Since the 1900's Colombia has been sumerged in multiple armed conflicts and civil wars, we've had guerrillas and paramilitares, we've had liberals vs conservatives, and always the most damaged are the Colombian people, the peasent's, the campesinos. There's the beauty of Encanto, the familly Madrigal and the whole town found that safe place that many had died looking for. When you know Colombian history, and have been drown with this kind of stories, this scene in particular is devastating. In them I see my own abuela, who had to flee when she was really young in that exact same scenario. I can't stop praising Disney's decition to include this in the movie.

Right now I'm guessing that because she had three children to raise on her own and she never went back to the river either because she never felt ready to do so or because she didn't have time to do so she wasn't able to properly mourn Pedro. And maybe she even started focusing on the family being 'perfect' and focused on the miracle that took place afterwards so that she wouldn't have time to focus on his actually being killed or on the fact that she still misses him and would've wanted to live a regular life with him and their children even with no gifts, no miracles and no magic. And because she hasn't been able to face that memory properly and hasn't been able to mourn him properly she hasn't been able to move on with the next stage of her life properly.

Abuela reminds me a lot of Mama Imelda from Coco. Both are women who lost their husbands at relatively-young ages with very young kids to take care of, both had to immediately shoulder a lot of responsibility, both run their families and households with the intent of doing right by them to protect them but develop ultimately-damaging zeal. It's a very human, nuanced perspective, and I'm glad Disney is branching out from "Disney villains" to tell more stories like this.

This is the darkest Disney has gone in a while and again I’m amazed at Disney allowed this to be in the script. It’s just all the better for it kids can handle little bit of darkness and understand this. And again that there is no true villain in this Film you can’t even blame Abuela too much because you understand why she did it why she was like this. And when she finally realizes it she fully admits her mistakes and knows she did The wrong things for what she thought was the right reason. I'm not really familiar with the history of Colombia, but the fact that their village was attacked and they needed to flee their home, was that an important historical event? Like, I can't really figure out why people would ravage a town but than also actively persue the people who've fled if there wasn't any beef there, so if someone could explain that would really mean the world to me💕

Hi, Colombian here. It was a historical event. We called it La Violencia. It happened as a civil war between Liberales (democratic party equivalent) and Conservadores (republican party equivalent). Armed people from both parties went town after town torturing and killing all the declared members of the opposite party, which sometimes were the entire population. Thats why they fled in Encanto.

Though It's not specifically said in the movie, it seems like it may be referring to "Thousand days' War" from late 1800 to early 1900 or "La violencia" era ("The violence") around the 1940's. Both political conflicts, there were numerous and terrible acts of violence by political armed groups and supporters from rival political parties having as a result a lot of deaths and course a lot of collateral damages; people from rural areas were forced to leave their homes and everything behind to survive, as depicted in the movie.

Abuela forgot that the miracle wasnt the magic. The miracle was her and her children. It was their lives. They were supposed to die that night, but because of Pedro they got to live. She became so caught up on the gifts she forgot that the fact that she even has grandchildren is a miracle.

yeah it is really obvious in the way that normal people when they have a new baby in the family will clearly see the baby as a little miracle and will be so grateful to have them. While the Abuela, when the grandchildren were born, was more focused on the day when they would 'become' miracles.

I wish more people could try to understand how complex Abuela Alma is as a character. This isn't one of your 'emotionally-easy' disney films, where there's a clear cut good guy and bad guy. This is a film about generational trauma. Not to mention the historical/real life ties to Colombian history of people suffering from violence + displacement. Abuela lost everything and had to rebuild an entire life for herself, her children, and her village- all by herself. Did that give her the excuse to be emotionally abusive and neglectful toward her own family? Absolutely not. But my point is- she's a complex person. She's not a "bitch" or whatever. And what means the most to me is that (unlike most real life people who've hurt their families) Abuela Alma actually ends up listening to her family when she realizes that her behavior has only hurt + made things much more difficult for them. As someone whose family has a history of generational trauma (allbeit, not comparable to Colombian violence + displacement), I wish some of the people in my family could do the hard thing that Abuela Alma actually managed to do- take the time to finally listen to each other and work to make things better.

A little bit of context: this depicted an actual historial event that happened in Colombia, from the looks of it it's most likely La Violencia, it lasted from 1946-1958 (but it's effects can be felt to these days, the current problem with las FARC and all the terrorist Group and la guerrilla are a direct consecuence of those years) and it was basically a war between conservatives and liberals, and as you can see each side would go to towns or villages of the other side and massacre them. For example: if a town was conservative then the liberals would go and burn down their houses or kill the people there. They would come in the middle of the night and everybody had to run until they left (my grandfather has told me some stories of that time and how it was to live in those days, and it was really awful, I couldn't begin to describe it like someone who lived it). And back then they would either take the men or kill them, women and children were not so in danger, so in this moment he was basically surrendering himself knowing they wouldn't chase after them anymore. As an added bous the whole conflict with the grandmother was more than just grief, it was trauma from this time: being afraid of being scared and alone like that again, so the miracles were a way of making her family stronger and thus never being in that position again. The last few minutes hit really deep with the colombian history and generational trauma, and you don't fully comprehend it unless you understand a little bit of colombian history.
