This double bass exercise shows the tempo I start to transition from thigh to ankle technique is 160bpm. I still use a mix of thighs and ankles at that range. Above 200bpm it's full ankle technique. This is just a guide, there are many ways to do this as with everything else. And this is just what I've practiced and am comfortable with.

That’s one of my practice reigments for foot technique. I often practice this around 140-180 bpm for mid tempo feel. It also works for 220-270 bpm using swivel technique

Nice, I don't know swivel at all, perhaps I should try :D Any tips on swiveling?
@swivelken248chan6
@swivelken248chan6 Год назад
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ Work one foot each on swivel. I found that helps me. I would set the spring tension maximum for faster response to the pedal for the swivel.

I like this one too, I like to play the 8th notes foot-to-foot like you did here, but every other cycle I play the 8th notes with just the right/ left foot, and I also ad one bar of triplets sometimes before the 16th notes, but sometimes after, I like to mix it up to avoid playing habits. Nice drill though.

Technically you can't truly isolate the hip from the ankle what happens is you start static contraction of the abs to hold your balance which shortens the motion at the hip but you are always moving both parts
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 2 года назад
Yes Damian you're right. It's never 100% isolation of course, more like a transition into which muscle group you use more of.

Tech question: Is it normal for the right pedal to be more flexible and have less resistance
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ Год назад
Yes it is. Try playing your left pedal with your right leg on a couple of different pedals and you'll see for yourself. Also since the left pedal can never be the same, it's attached to the main beat through a long shaft, so every pedal hit needs to move the beater+the shaft, instead of your right pedal which only needs to move the beat. So the only way to truly get double pedals feeling the same is to get 2 bass drums and 2 single pedals like some drummers do.

Would you say it’s better/easier to play 100-130 bpm with high or low spring tension? I’m really struggling with those tempos
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ Год назад
lower tension is easier to play 100-130bpm. high tension helps the beater rebound quicker but needs more effort to start. But I do recommend setting medium - to high tension at least because if you get very used to lower tension to get to mid tempo 140-150bpm, it will be harder to get past that to 180bpm and above especially when you have to re-train to a higher tension. Check out these few videos to help you understand all that I'm talking about 1. spring tensionru-vid.comAbr1OzI_Ovk?feature=share 2. training leg muscles ru-vid.comH-Iu3bImsJE?feature=share 3. double bass technique ru-vid.comKf72e5PvZnU?feature=share 4. 3 key exercises and explanations for double bass ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-seZmjYkvIBw.html

How do you get that high of a volume when using only ankles
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 2 года назад
I'm tensing my thighs to get more power above 200bpm. And it's probably the phone that's making it loud. I didn't use a mic for these videos. Just the sound from my phone. But you can tell they're noticeably softer and with less attack at 210bpm. Before that I can still use my thighs to help with the volume. I don't know above 220bpm what it's gonna be like. I can't consistently play those speeds yet.

When you start playing at a tempo of 160, do you start rocking the pedal? So it's not a heel-down technique anymore?
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ Год назад
Oh I don't play heel down at all if you observe. My heels are either going up and down with the stroke, or staying kinda suspended. So it's all from a heel up perspective. But I also don't keep my calves tensed and I don't lift my heels very high
