I said I would go first and leave a comment about my favorite yarn to spin and my favorite wheel to spin it on, but I can decide! It's like trying to choose my favorite child! 😜

Ok, I just found this channel today and I am going to say that it is by far the BEST instructional channel for spinning I have come across. I have only been spinning for a year and a half and already want to go fast on a double drive wheel. This makes the new “to me” drive system COMPLETELY understandable. Thank you for taking the time to teach. You are so easy to listen to and you know just what you are talking about. Much appreciation!!

I just bought an antique double drive (flax wheel) at a thrift store today, so this is very helpful! Prior to this I have only used a drop spindle. My favorite yarns to spin are goat and llama fibers. I get it for free at work (I work at a zoo), and I love getting to spin fiber from animals I know personally!

I am a spinning virgin based in the UK and acquired a double drive just before lockdown (I didn’t even know it was a double drive). Your explanation here is invaluable I have watched it twice, you are a natural presenter. Spinning is like learning to drive - several skills to synchronise and I’m now on that journey. My second skein of just 2-plied wool (Jacob) is actually useable - but will be kept for posterity. Am now drying some fleece after scouring which is from a friends ram - my next adventure - yes I’ve watched your fleece videos too. Subscribed & fully engaged - go girl!!! ps- i’m not Roy Burch (that’s my dad) not sure how his name appeared here, I’m Wendy !

Just what I needed. I brought home a Matchless that was already set up in double drive. I’m an experienced spinner but new to DD. Was feeling a bit defeated by this very different method. I learned pretty much everything I needed to know to get spinning and making nice yarn. I found it tricky to finesse the take up when doing long draw. It seems like keeping a bit of tension on the yarn during take up keeps the yarn from developing pigtails. Thanks for posting this. 😍🥰❤️

Just inherited(saved from the dumpster) an antique double drive wheel that originally belonged to my husband's great great grandmother and was just nearing frustrated that none of the tutorials I could find actually explained how to set up the drive band and how to change the bobbins. This one had to be reverse-unscrewed, and I've been too scared to use force to get it apart, so it was a relief when it just. Unscrewed easily when turned the right way, as you showed. So thank you! ❤️

I've had a Columbine wheel sitting in a corner since I fell on it (tripped over the dog) and warped the frame. I decided I want to fix it and use it again...and since the original drive band is gone (who knows where, not me) I couldn't remember how to put a new band on it. Your very clear explanation of how a double-drive system is set up and works has given me the drive (pun intended) to make a new band and hope against hope I can get my Columbine back in use. (By the way, I learned to spin on a Turkish drop spindle from Louise Green of Greentree Ranch in 1973. I bought my first Columbine wheel in 1974, but in a period of prolonged insanity, sold it. The wheel I'm trying to fix was purchased in 2006 when I turned 59 1/2 and could pull off of my IRA without penalty. I've been using my spindle and an Ashford Kiwi for the last few years...I'm almost 76 and am determined to fix my Columbine!!)

You explained the ingenious and ancient subtleties of the double drive wheel beautifully. Imagine a modern spinning machine with variable speed bobbin and flyer servo motors and an optical system to watch the fibers twisting. It would need software, a computer, and months of programming. The old spinning wheel and a skilled operator however, produced consistent, even yarn hundreds of years ago. Today I inherited an old double drive spinning wheel which was made in Saskatchewan. It needs work and the whorl turns oposite from normal because it sits on right hand threads, but it's going to be a great wheel.

Your tutorials are excellent. I am looking into buying an antique spinning wheel, I believe it is a Cadorette CPW. Since I have never used a spinning wheel before, I needed to understand what is in front of me when I get there. Most of the wheels on the market are either decorative or genuine but have been purchased as a decorative antique, or came from a grandma's attic. This means that the person selling it will not be knowledgeable about spinning. This tutorial and the others you have on ratios, buying an antique and CPWs are very helpful. I am watching them over and over so that I will be able to buy a good wheel - or pass on the dust collector. Thank you so much Evie. ❤

Just came home with the P. Cadorette wheel today. It is gorgeous, and even though it has not been used for spinning for a very long time, it is in great condition and it is very eager to get back to work. Beside adding oil to the friction points and putting in a new drive band, it works like a charm. For the drive band, I used a cotton/linen blend yarn from Yarn Bee; it is very strong. The instructions in this video were helpful, and I did the following to easily thread the drive band alone: a) I used a piece of rope to tie one of the spokes to prevent the wheel from turning b) I tied the first end of the drive band to one of the maiden, and which allowed me to keep enough tension on the band to help it stay in its grooves c) I ran my fingers over each groove as I threaded the band to ensure it is correctly placed. After a few tries, I nailed it. The part that I struggled most with, is that I could not get the practice yarn to wind on the bobbin after spinning it. Adjusting the tension did not seem to help, then by chance, I managed to get it t to wind once. That's when I knew the problem was me. It took many fails to finally figure out that this wheel wants me to slow down slightly when the treadle is at its highest point, and only then will it take up the yarn. So excited to be so close to spinning my very first yarn on my very first wheel! Thank you so much Evie for your helpful videos❤

I did not purchase that particular wheel (a very pretty Paradis) because of probable dampness exposure. BUT…. because of your wonderful tutorials, and some luck, I am now owner of several wheels that I will lovingly restore to their full beauty and functionality. (The wheels make my heart leap with their beauty.) This is my current double drive question: I purchased a like-new Country Craftsman and set up the cotton cord per your instructions. The cord touches where it crosses! (Remember, this was my very first double-drive set-up, as I have only spun Scotch tension.). I thought I was doing something wrong, so I did a cord set-up on my CPW (newly purchased; not yet fully ready), and that worked out perfectly, not touching. Could this be a flaw in the design of the CC? There is not a lot of info on CC’s, although there is a group on Ravelry, which is not very active. Do you have any information? Thanks, Guru.

I don't know anything about spinning wheels, and I just love that you're giving a spinning wheel anatomy and physiology lesson! (And yes, my spinning wheel is a double drive). Weirdly, my parents also bought me a spinning wheel that I have to assemble, which I think is single drive, so I'll have to watch that tutorial some day too!

I have a Schacht Ladybug that I was trying to use in double drive, but I need some drive band suggestions (mine didn't have the DD band when I bought it). I've tried #10 cotton thread and fingering weight linen yarn (not enough tension) and a thicker cotton yarn that was too thick to go into the bobbin Grove.

Thank you , thank you, thank you! Between this video, and your video on SWSO, I have managed to get my spinning wheel functioning! All the parts were there, someone had just painted over them, so everything that should move, was stuck together, and if it shouldn't move, it was loose and flying around! Between your two videos I have everything working great now! Just finished adjusting the tension so that the bobbin takes up the fiber neatly. It is a castle wheel, double drive, so a little different, but your videos have helped turn it from a (nicely painted) decoration into a functioning wheel! (BTW I got it for $20 or else it was going to become kindling for a fire! A couple hours of labor and it works like a charm!)

They both have that screw on whorl, and I haven’t been able figure out how to do both Z and S twist, or why the drive band keeps popping off. I’m pretty sure I have a lot to learn from you. How do I get to the Friday thingie?

I like it! I am a beginner with a Majacraft rose . Everything is new to me. The thing that you said on the end of the video, that the yarn is beginnen to twist on the bobbin, it happend to me but with your advice I am back on trail. Thanks!!

I learned a lot about my spinning wheel in this video. It doesn’t have any markings on it so it is difficult to do any research about it. I got my wheel from a friend who was cleaning out her garage and she happened to be looking for a new home for her wheel around the same time that I was getting into spinning.

I recently found a beautiful kromski mazurka on offerup. I abandoned double drive almost immediately and converted it to the single drive. This is what I needed! And as a new spinner understanding the details of tensioning this type of wheel is so incredibly helpful!

I watched this again, and realised some things I was doing wrong. But this is because I now have more experience and it’s making sense now.

Hiya! Just what I needed! I bought an antique spinning wheel like the one you showed. I cannot get it to work, but now I found out it's because it has to go double 😊 Thank you so much. I'll try right away... though I would have loved to actually SEE you put on the cotton band❤ You are great🤗

Evie, thank you so much for this video. I just purchased an antique saxony style spinning wheel and have no idea how to get it to work but with your video, I think I can get started on this. I now need to watch your video on putting the drive band on, hopefully I'll do that part okay. I'm looking forward to trying this wheel. I love your videos!
