The Double Garrador boss fight is undoubtedly a major challenge for anyone playing Resident Evil 4 Remake for the first time. I still remember when I first got to that point. As soon as I entered the room (the Antechamber), I immediately knew that the Double Garrador boss fight was about to happen. The atmosphere was strikingly similar to the original RE4, where you face the twin Garradors. What really reminded me of the original was the room's symmetrical structure, which instantly triggered a little PTSD episode for me! But kidding aside...
After barely surviving this boss fight the first time, I thought to myself that I wouldn't be keen on replaying the game anytime soon. I doubted I could find any solid strategies to deal with those clawed berserkers. But as things go, I soon got hooked on the game, like I always do with Resident Evil games (except for the third one - Nemesis really wasn't my thing). The numerous bonus items and challenges were motivation enough to keep facing the Double Garrador boss fight repeatedly.
Before long, I had achieved pretty much everything there was to accomplish. By the end, after around 450 hours of Resident Evil 4 Remake, I did a few 100% Knife Only runs (yes, that includes taking down Verdugo, Krauser, and Saddler with just a knife). I also completed the game with each individual weapon. The only exception was the Bolt Thrower, which I overlooked without even realizing it - until it finally hit me in the end. That’s when I decided to tackle the Double Garrador boss fight using only the Bolt Thrower. Even though I had my doubts, in hindsight, it was the best decision I made because the Bolt Thrower delivered the most action-packed gameplay ever.
The challenge in this fight is to take out the Garradors without getting distracted by the Ganados. Of course, there are various strategies for this boss fight. But with the Bolt Thrower, things are different. With it, you can kill each Ganado without the Garradors breaking free from the wall. This is because the Bolt Thrower is essentially silent. That’s why I titled the video STEALTH ONLY.
The title is, of course, a bit problematic. Strictly speaking, STEALTH ONLY should mean that you remain completely undetected by your enemies as the attacker. However, once you enter the room, the Ganados obviously see you-this can’t be avoided. So, you can’t really call it stealth. But the Garradors don’t hear or register you, which is why I chose that title.
Some time ago, a user commented that it still can’t be called stealth, whether or not the Garradors could hear me, because I used attachable mines. I replied that, for me, the stealth criterion is met as long as the Garradors can’t figure out my location. Clearly, it’s a matter of interpretation… It probably would’ve been simpler if I’d titled the video ‘Stealth Weapons Only’... But enough philosophizing!
When you enter the boss fight, you’ll initially see three Ganados in your line of sight. In the background, you can already see the two Garradors chained to the wall. Now it's important to stay calm. With the Bolt Thrower ready, start taking out the first Ganados right away. More will soon follow. Contrary to a common belief, the Ganados do not spawn endlessly. Exactly 17 Ganados will spawn during this fight unless you kill the Garradors earlier. Then, you can finally leave the room.
While dealing with the Ganados, you can run, perform melee attacks, and parry with the knife. None of this will trigger the Garradors. You just need to be careful not to get too close to the Garradors. There’s an invisible line at about halfway down the benches. If you cross that line, the twins will definitely break free.
The Double Garrador Boss Fight is designed so that you can use a maximum of two flash grenades, and there’s a specific reason for this: at one point, two shielded Ganados spawn, and at another, two Ganados mutate into a Plaga Guadana/Mandibula. In both cases, the use of flash grenades is ideal as it will stagger or kill the enemies.
The plan is to use a flash grenade to stagger the two Ganados with shields. Then you can slam them to the ground with a melee attack, causing the shields to break or be left on the ground, or you can finish off the Ganados with the knife right away. Of course, you could also shoot the shields with bolts, but that takes time, during which more Ganados can spawn and surround you.
As for the two Plagas, you could skip using a flash grenade by either preventing the mutation altogether or shooting the parasites directly, but this also takes a lot of time. If you watch closely, you can spot which downed Ganado is about to transform into a Plaga Guadana/Mandibula, but you’d need to be right up close to quickly stab or shoot them.
Once the Zealots are out of the way, you can calmly focus on the Garradors. From that point on, it’s just a walk in the park.
