Hey Scott, Being an old chippy in Australia, plenty of experience with hardwood. Old Ironbark and the like, are harder than a bulls forehead. So; drill holes as per Rimu, then swipe some grease, candle wax or soap on screw threads. Let me know how that goes. Btw, love my "But can he hang a door T shirt". Keep up the good work, you guys are great. Cheers Crowy

Hey Scott. After watching your videos I want to thank you for inspiring me to do my renovations and to take safety around dust particles seriously. I never would of thought how much better I would feel using a full face mask when imitating a roof possum running cables or how much easier clean up is by collecting dust with a vacuum during circ saw use instead of after. Love watching all the small things about the building trades you show and explain and I can’t wait for episode 1000 sometime in the future.

I also don a mask and hook up a vacuum to my saws now after watching Scott. I think about all those years of thinking that I didn’t need a mask at blowing sawdust out of my nose at the end of the day and how dumb it was.

OK - as someone who has worked a bit over the years with old dry timber...both native and boric treated pine...Yes, you will need to pilot hole every screw, but you also need to scrape your screw threads across a cake of Sunlight, or similar soap. Makes all the difference in the world. Yes, a planning / scheduling episode would be great. We all know from experience, especially current experience, that a plan is no more than a plan as there will always be circumstances, whether it be supply issues or 'discoveries' along the way, that will disrupt the plan. Planning however is essential. Thanks Scott and Jess, I always appreciate your videos. Ian
@markphilpot8734
@markphilpot8734 Год назад
Pilot holes are great and really help. Boric treated and ultra hard wood can benefit by soaping the screw threads prior to insertion. You wanna talk hard, red gum. That wood bends even good nails. Absolutely have to predrill prior to nailing on red gum. Don’t see this wood any more as it was used in Craftsman style houses in the States. Lived in and worked in this style of house. Saw a lot of knob and tube wiring in them. Good luck with your refurb mate! Was an old timer that taught me the soap bar trick. The old timers know a lot of time saving tricks.

The AQ21 seal is meant for door frames with the AQ63 the window seal (the manufacturers info). I prefer the AQ21 for both and use on all my windows and doors i make. There is a router cutter (for 1/2 inch routers) to make the correct groove for the seal with a small rebate for the seal to sit in. Worth a look (about £60 in Uk). Really enjoy the videos BTW

Tip on driving screws into hardwood. Once you drive it in and back it out twice. Remove that screw and use a fresh one at room temperature. Every time you drive the screw in, it heats up. Causing fatigue in the screw.
@theessentialguideforblokes7960
Pilot drill and don’t use an impact driver. The impacts work harden the screws which are already hardened steel and brittle, smooth force from a drill driver works better, or just buy purlin screws!

Quality of buildings in NZ is truely terrible. I’m on holiday in Europe for the first time and first 2 days I was amazed stopping and looking / playing with every mundane thing. Doors windows etc. The indoor temperature isn’t just the outdoor temperature? You can hardly hear things outside the house when you’re inside?? Wild. Most kiwis have just simply never lived in a house that is warm in every room all winter, there is little concept or understanding of just how good housing can be. And I’m in Central Europe, way lower income and gdp per capita than NZ. Can only imagine Sweden
@rikardekvall3433
@rikardekvall3433 Год назад
@@jackgibbons6013 You are so right. Housing in NZ, Auz and US in the warmer region don’t understand the gain with insulation. Keeps the house warmer in winter and keeps the house cooler in summer. More economical in the long term for the heating/cooling costs. Saves electricity. In short term, better indoor quality.

That was totally awesome. We're looking to buy another place in Golden Bay and most probably we will have to renovate - so it is great to learn from your experience with double glazing. Having seen the price of (beautiful but horrendously expensive) new aluminium joinery that has wood on the inside, I am convinced that double glazing old windows the way you're doing them is vastly better than replacing old windows with new aluminium joinery. Thanks for the excellent content. Hugely appreciated.

Keen on planning episode for sure. We need to sort our bathroom and kitchen now (we shuffled around to get everything else done) I cannot think how to do it and live in... except for digging a hole in the back yard and erecting a shelter for the loo and sponge baths... (we have two kids... we are also from chch - lived through an earthquake, no loo for a week and a house full of friends whose houses were not safe afterwards, we know about makeshift loos, but it really does not appeal outside of a natural disaster if I'm honest!!) I am really stoked to see a sealing option on the older house windows tho, i hate the foam sticky ones with a passion. I do wonder how hard ours might be to do for diy renovators... esp with a 90 + year old house where NOTHING is straight. NOTHING. Our awesome builder who does our random complicated work never suggested it as an option to us... so I'm wondering if that was on purpose!! Ha ha!!

Rule number one. Pre drill all holes in rimu. A clearance hole in the bit being fixed and, for a size 8 screw a 2mm bit for the thread to bite into. Use Glue as well and it'll never move.

Scott - I observed your issues w the Jams and adding the additional wood frame... as your screwing into the Old Wood of the window. Here is a trick my Uncle and Dad taught me ( in a galaxy far far away ). After drilling the pilot hole through the filler piece and into the old frame add some liquid dishwashing soap to the screw threads to assist in screwing into the wood. You can also use an Bar Soap stick and drag the screw over the soap bar so the threads gather soap flakes in the groves of the threads. I also recommend using "SPAX" wood screws as they are High Quality Steel made in Germany. Also greating's from "Merica " Again thanks for the video's.

Good video Scott. To eliminate that closing contact (13:30) I would have notched each upper Left and Right edge of the sash windows; or broken the full length. I too have always used wax/ soap/spit to lubricate fastenings into timber.
