A lot of people love to see Mainline Steam locos operating in pairs - Double-Headed..
See a mix of workings from the last couple of years with pairs of locos at work at various locations on the British mainlines.
Hope you enjoy this mix! Thanks for watching.

Nice pair of green and black Red Staniers. To avoid further confusion, Blue Peter has been painted blue.

It must be incredibly difficult for the two drivers to pair up to increase and decrease power so as to create a smooth ride for the passengers, no link up via electrics or hydraulics it’s all about sound and touch, l take my hat awf to them !!!!

That's the first thought that went through my head as I started watching this video, and then I saw your comment!

Anyone know what that weird repeating squeaky sound coming from the 2nd of the two castles was? Beautifully videoed BTW, as ever 🤩

My guess is it’s from the motion, maybe something in the crosshead assembly isn’t getting lubricated well enough
@melodymonger
@melodymonger 2 месяца назад
@@andrewreynolds4949 Well I wondered whether it was something to do with lubrication but then I thought "what do I know!? I'm sure the people who run these engines know what they're doing". But I've never heard that before.

The four front bogie wheels aren’t going round on Sir Nigel Greeley!,!
@andrewreynolds4949
@andrewreynolds4949 2 месяца назад
@@melodymonger That's just my best guess. There's only so many things that could cause a reciprocating squeak like that, and it vaguely looks like it matches the rod movements. Whatever it is it's not a big deal, most steam locomotives I've seen make some sort of clanks and squeaks when running.

This is probably a stupid question and I’ve never asked anyone before but I guess now is as good a time as ever , how does this setup work ? When it starts off does the front loco do the work then the rear one gives it a bit of throttle? If the second loco gives it a bit more than the front does it’s wheels loose traction ? It might just be over thing the whole thing

Yeah good question

Whistle codes used to be used, but I would think radios are now used?

In theory the lead locomotive should be working slightly harder, otherwise if it’s not pulling out the slack it’s not actually pulling the train. I believe the front locomotive eases on the power first followed by the trailing one.
@peterw2845
@peterw2845 2 месяца назад
@@andrewreynolds4949 thanks , one more quick question if you don’t mind , if one loco is pulling harder than the other , isn’t the “slacker” loco having its pistons “engine braked” if you like , like a car going down a hill , or doesn’t steam work like that ?

Is the diesel being towed or is she working?

It provides train heating and support if needed. Plenty of power on the front 👍
