Alec shows unique double hose regulators from the 1950's and 1960's.
To see old do-it-yourself scuba sets, watch Alec's "Scuba Tech Tip: Home Made Scuba Tanks and Regulators - S03E11"
• Home Made Scuba Tanks ...
** In this episode of Vintage Scuba **
- Good: an engraved "Nemrod Snark 3", by Seamless, made in Spain
- an autographed "WaterLung Hydro-Twin" by Sam Lecocq, founder of Sportsways and Aqua Lung
- a "Northhill Air Lung" in cast bronze, built in "J" valve & venturi assist
- a "Viking" beer can regulator with low pressure outlet
- a Dacor "Clipper" with "Dial-A-Breath" venturi assist
- a "Aqua-Lung" "Aqua-Master" 2 stage regulator by U.S. Divers
- Rene Bussoz brought French made regulators to California in the US west coast and founded U.S. Divers and Aqua Lung
- Popular Science in July 1953 showed how to make your own diving lung
- parts needed: surplus WW2 oxygen diluter valve, 2 aircraft compressed air tanks, brass plumbing fittings, gas mask hoses and webbing
- Bad: hard to breath, brittle hoses, not reliable, no purge button, very hard to clear
- first popular training book "The New Science of Skin and Scuba Diving"
- Alec's scuba course in the 1960's was 26 weeks long

Hi Alec - I really appreciate your series. I'm only 53, so I missed out on the double hose era. My main reg is an Aqualung Mistral, but I dive vintage double hose for fun. Just about to do a trip with Spirotechnique Mistral and Royal Mistral regs. One of my Royal's was given to me by Colin Doeg, who holds the SSI Platunum Pro award and co-founded the British Society of Underwater Photographers in 1967. I also have a Dacor Clipper 3 donated by the late Peter Scoones, the underwater cameraman. I really value the regs these guys gave me for their history. I'm really enjoying your insights into the pioneering days of the sport. Great show. Thank you.

I was trained on an Aqualung Mistral. Does yours still have the yellow hoses? They were good old regs, tough, not great breathers by today's standards but, as you say, a lot of fun to use. Execpt the Clipper. It was a tough breather. You had to suck the air out of it! You ought to join some of our 2 hose events. You'd be thrilled to see 50 guys all decked out and diving in gear from the 60's. Thanks for watching.

Hi Alec - annoyingly, I'm a Brit based in the UK. I learned to dive 'informally' at 14 or 15 on Spiro Aquilon and US Divers Calypso single hose. I also used to disappear into the shallows on my own with my mum looking on in fear...I should have thought of two people divided by a common language! My Aqualung Mistral is the 2005 hydrid, not the real thing you mention. However I'm diving Royal Mistrals for sheer pleasure with a J valve and just a back pack (no BCD). That is useful to know about the Clipper. When I first started on vintage double hose, I had no idea what was normal. I think it is brilliant you are running double hose courses. I an hoping one of my Healthways masks will seal or at least seal a bit for my vintage dives later this month. Your vintage rallys sound fantastic. At the risk of sounding like a stalker, I'd like to say how fascinating your shows are. It is great there is something accessible out there to learn from and rfer back to.

You contact me anytime. I'd love to be able to help you if I could. I'm glad you find the videos fun because I'm doing them for fun. If you learn something that's great too. Where are you in the UK? My dad was from Bridge, near Canterbury and we have visited there several times. I'm old, almost 70 and we love to travel, have been around the world a few times, dived everywhere and we really enjoy Britain.

Thank you very much for this video. Although I was fully equipped with modern stuff, now and then I enjoyed using my Royal Mistral two hose regulator, at least until it was stolen from me. It was fun to shallow dive, 12-15 mt, with little equipment, no BCD or pressure gauge, no redundant equipment, just the 18 Lt - 220 ATM - tank, the two hose regulator, mask and snorkel, fins, short wetsuit, knife and weight belt. No dive computers either, they were not so common yet, just US Navy tables - when needed -, a watch and a depth gauge. A bit of tech dives, with no much space for mistakes.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter Год назад
That is exactly how I started diving in 1960 and I thought I was super high tech. Losing a Mistral is sad day and hope some of my vintage double hoses bring back better memories. Thanks for watching and surviving the stone age days of diving. A

Enjoyed the classic style regulators. Alec your wonderful to listen to, I'm here in Nevada and they have on Cox Cable Sea Hunt with Lloyd Bridges 4:30 am ran from 1958 to 1961 i still love watching Mike Nelson using his double hose reg. Another show from early 60s it says in credits diving equipment furnished by Dacor, yes they were huge. Wasnt there a company called Healthways making masjs & fins ? I can sit having some coffee and your deep knowledge of scuba's early years. I find it exciting and brings back many fond memories. I see us divers still makes same mask from 1972 purge valve, always liked them. This is a hobby i am considering getting back into again, I've been out of scuba since late 70s and wow so much change. I still like the old style double system. Everything was made to last and often overbuilt and beautiful looking. Be well alec and stay warm. 👍

Great to hear from an old-timer Mark. There were many dive companies back then making wonderful scuba gear. You may remember the names - VOIT, yes, Healthways (very big), DACOR, Sportsways, Farallon, Tekna, etc. The biggest change in gear is the materials used. Back then everything was rubber. Now it's almost 100% synthetic - looks good, lasts forever and usually works better too. Personally, I think that the gear today is superior in both performance and reliability. Hey. I'm old and I like chrome but really it was heavy, didn't do anything worthwhile and eventually got worn off. The basics of scuba hasn't changed. It's probably safer now with Safe Seconds and BCDS, but otherwise, it's the same - easy and fun. Jump in./ I guarantee you'll be glad you did. Take care. Alec

Really fun video Alec. You always make me laugh the way you tell some of your stories. One of the things I enjoyed the most when I attended the Sea Hunt Forever event at Silver Springs this year was seeing your collection of gear, and all the vintage gear the club members had. I was probably a nuisance walking around taking pictures of tanks, regs and all the other dive gear everyone had. But I thoroughly enjoyed it and really appreciate how you and the group put all that vintage dive equipment to good use.

Alec I just found your channel and watched a few of your clips and am impressed by your wealth of knowledge. I started diving back in the 70's and am a Padi Divemaster. Haven't been going diving much for the past few years but have been getting the Bug again. For a long time I have wanted to try a Double Hose Rig but had been put off by the fact that you couldn't attach anything to the first or second stage. Then I found the Kraken..it wasn't too long until Bryan had a special deal for the unit with a pressure gage and a safe second so I ordered one. Then the fun started..My goal was to end up with a modern tech style rig but with the double hose reg. Long story short I ended up building two rigs because I had to use bits and pieces from a variety of sources and had a lot of parts left over. The end result is a VDH backplate with a Hog wing and a harness that is part Dive Right and part Hollis. It has a Scubapro Cumberbund and backplate pad, an Air2 inflator and I ended up using my old Scubapro G200 second stage as the safe second. So far I have only had it in the pool a couple of times and each time I make a few more changes and now it's ready for the ocean. It is quite a bit different in use..I wouldn't recommend one for a novice. There is a big difference in the ease of inhalation depending on your attitude in the water. Getting the reg down between your shoulder blades helps a lot but after using it I started thinking of all the times going head first down the anchor line hence the old G200 second stage. Just shut off the DSV on the Kraken and switch regs ..problem solved..Kind of a hybrid solution. All in all a single hose setup is a lot easier to use but not near as much fun as trying to make a modern rig with a double hose reg..Also it is really interesting seeing how people react to seeing it..it ranges to disbelief to I want one..

Every video is wonderful and a wealth of information. Thanks so much for doing these Alec! I grew up using double hose regulators at a YMCA camp in Wimberley, Texas, where as a nine/ten year old we listened to a record narrated by "Mike Nelson", after which we strapped on a small tank and off we'd go. But I wish there were safe and reliable double hose regulators for use today, if only to remove the bubbles to behind my head so I wouldn't so easily scare the fish when photographing. Would that be a reasonable proposition today Alec? One wonders where to obtain a double hose regulator and how to keep it maintained.

Great to hear from you Lloyd. Several of my 'vintage' friends dive exclusively with 2 hose regs. You have 2 choices. A vintage double hose regulator properly serviced can be used provided you observe standard safe diving practices or, and this does not suggest you can disregard safe diving practices, you can purchase a brand new, modern, made-yesterday, double hose regulator. Check my good friend Bryan's website - www.vintagedoublehose.com . Thanks for watching and good luck. Alec

Tanks so much Alec. (that was a typing error, but then it seemed appropriate, so........) But your friend Brian's website is another terrific resource! I'll soon be an Argonaut Kraken owner. It's exactly what I have been looking for for years!!! Maybe I'll even throw out my BCD, strap on a simple safety vest, and Sportsways Waterlung Backpack that I was so proud of when I first bought it. Everyone got one of those, didn't they? Please keep the videos coming. I started my wife on watching them with me and now we're quite addicted. Long live Mike Nelson and Sea Hunt! Oh, and Alec Pierce!

Complicated? When I was diving in the early 60's, I took my tank, regulator, mask, fins and knife. No BC, no gauges, no safe second, . The first regulator I bought was an Aqualung Aquamatic - tiny first stage, 1 hose to the plastic, side exhaust second stage. That's it. Complicated? I clamped the reg to my tank, strapped on my knife and jumped it. It was incredible. Alec

@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter it is a tendency in design profession, you begin by doing something that function neatly ( prototypes and early production runs ) then you merge functions and parts to reduce the production costs, where early regulators were massive and mostly metallic construction, today,s regulators are mostly done of plastic injections, even in critical parts as valve seats so the cost is greatly reduced for the mass production, the single hose regulator is a good example of that, the hose on the single hose regulator is much simpler to fabricate as the fittings are relatively standards CNC produced and the hose is bulk fabrication.

How did old divers learn about the effects of nitrogen build up in the body? Also do you have vintage dive tables and how were they developed in the early days of diving?

Alec, have you seen the Argonaut Kraken new double hose regulators by Vintage Double Hose? Just came across them recently and wondered what your thoughts were and/or if you've ever tried one. Looks like fun. Thanks!

My brother and I built my own regulator 20 years ago Still have it somewhere... we had access to shop tools. Used a tire shrader valve. A piece of aluminum tube and part of a plastic yoyo. And a diaphragm was a piece of tire tube.... it looked like an Poseidon Cyklon. We built it out of our head and and encyclopedic.... we did not copy anything...

It must have been fun to make one from scratch. Very few divers today have any idea of the process from tank air to inhaling. Hope you had fun and learned a lot. Thanks for sharing Rol.

I'll speak to Kevin my producer, cameraman and video mentor to see what we could do. It might be a short series of videos to deal with all the issues. Thanks for watching. Alec

Simple gear for simple diving. We didn't go deep like today, 30' was deep to us (no SPG's). It was fun with lots of changes every year. You know, like that new darn fangled contraction called a BCD!! A

Alec, again thank you for a great video. I, of course, have another question for you. How did you fill your air tanks? Was it like it is today and you had to find someone with a purified air compressor or did people just take the risk with the one in their garage/shop? By the way, I looked up those old dive gauges you mentioned in your last video, very interesting, thank you.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 8 лет назад
Well it was a bit of a risk. I got air from the fire department in my small home town. That was a common source for divers for many years before dive stores started to open. Some divers had their own little compressor, often home made. Also, there were lots of dive clubs then and many would pool their resources to buy a compressor. That's not so much the case now. I recall that many years ago while diving in Mexico, my group would sit in front of the dive shop in the morning with a few beers and snacks and, if the divers who went out in the morning all came back in the evening, we knew the air was safe!!
@joshuawade8319
@joshuawade8319 8 лет назад
Great story. Since you brought it up, what is your feeling on getting a fire department to fill air tanks now if someone (me) dose not live near a dive shop? Thanks again.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 8 лет назад
Sure - if they will do it. The air is fine but many are concerned about liability. Give it a try. If you know a firefighter or can get a contact in the department first, that might help. Thanks for watching Joshua. Alec

Apologies I should have said early divers not old divers. So I will ask in a better way. How did early divers learn about nitrogen effects and do you have early table that you can share in a video about vintage diving?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 8 лет назад
No problem Lucas. Any early divers are now old divers. All we had were the US Navy Dive Tables which were based on very sketchy data backed up by real dive experience. Essentially, before computers, the dive tables were planned in theory and tested by divers to see if they worked. Divers were Guinea pigs. The tables were certainly not designed for recreational divers. Navy dives generally involved going down to a certain depth for a certain time and then coming up. They didn't do multi-level dives so sport divers who do almost exclusively multi-level dives were at a real disadvantage. If we went straight down to 100' and then right back up to 40', we still had to surface within 20 minutes. That's what the tables said. Divers today have no idea how lucky they are to have all the research and computers. Thanks for watching. Alec

thanks, but what was the benefit of double rather than single one in design?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 3 года назад
Doubles were the first scuba regs. Single hoses came years latter and soon took over the market. A double hose reg breaths different, has no mouthpiece purge button but is very difficult to free flow (a 4" diagram), exhaust bubbles are behind you so nothing obscures your view and most important, are super cool. Check out my Vintage Scuba playlist to see these in use at our Sea Hunt Forever events.

can a smoker scuba?
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter 5 лет назад
If he can get the cigarette lit, sure!! Smoking is not good for anyone - surprise!!! A scuba diver who smokes is at an even greater disadvantage. He will have shorter dives and the possibility of s pressure-related accident is slightly higher. So the answer is yes - and no. Take care Boris. Alec
