This chapter introduces the double-time ride pattern in a 10/8 feel.
By removing every other note from the ride pattern, the entire groove takes
on a half-time feel. This is also an important building block for moving
between half-time and double-time within the 10/8 feel, which will be spelled
out more thoroughly in the next chapter.
Keep the metronome in a fast five to start with (5/8, 5/4), and move it into a
slow four (4/4) once you have these grooves internalized. Focus on keeping
the backbeat feel strong while navigating the rests in these ride patterns.
Once you get the hang of these, speed them up. The double-time ride pattern
should make them easier to play at fast tempos than the standard 10/8
groove.
Variation - Play the opposite ride pattern by starting it with an eighth rest.
Also, try playing every snare ghost note as a double-stroke or 'diddle.
