It's the 100th episode!! Yay!! Thank you so much for all your support. Cheers to another 100!
This one is all about double weave - specifically, weaving 2 layers so the finished fabric is twice the width. To do that, we need to connect the layers on one side and keep them separate on the other, giving us 1 double wide project when it's complete. Just like magic!
If you are unfamiliar with double weave, I have a few previous videos that will get you up to speed!
Ep 18 - Double Weave Overview ( • Double Weave (Weaving ... )
Ep 63 - Creating a Tube Using Double Weave ( • Creating a Tube Using ... )
Ep 99 - Planning for Double Weave ( • Planning for Double Weave )

I see that you have the top layer on shafts 1 & 3 the bottom layer on 2 & 4. Does it have to be set to every other shaft or can it be done top layer 1 & 2, bottom layer # & 4? Thanks for all your help and advice whether it comes direct from you or form your other viewers. I can't count the number of ways you have helped me learn to weave.🥰

Well, my sample is coming out in double width ok. But, instead of dark on top and light on the bottom it is coming out a mix on both top and bottom. I did something wrong. Now I have to figure out what! Lol. This is actually fun!
@karlahernandez5750

I figured it out. I threaded the heddles in the wrong order. And I figured out I have been dressing my loom wrong for years! Couldn't figure out why I always had such a shallow shed. Duh! The warp goes over the front and back beam not under! I will get this figured out. I did manage to get a really nice fold line in my sample! Thanks!

congratulation on this100 episode. I have a question regarding the fishing line. Do you include as a warp end or as a floating selvage?
@ActonCreative

Thank you so much! I would recommend incorporating it like a floating selvedge. So, it goes through the reed, but not through a heddle.

Could you suggest a simple draft for warping double width fabric? Excellent videos!
@ActonCreative
@ActonCreative 10 месяцев назад
Hi! Great question! If you've never tackled double weave before, I like the idea of planning for 2 layers of plain weave in 2 different colors. That way you can keep track of which one is the "top" and which one is the "bottom". To create the fabric, you can simply tackle it like a regular plain weave project, except that you have double the amount of warp yarns. All that to say that I don't have an actual draft to offer, but I don't know that you need one, either! I would keep it really simple the first time out and then grow into more complicated options afterwards. Mostly, have fun!!

Should I learn on a ridged heddle loom or an 8 shaft loom? The ridged has a stand but I’ll have to wait for one for the 8 shaft loom. I want to make blankets.
@ActonCreative
@ActonCreative Год назад
Hi! I'm afraid that's not a simple question to answer. It depends on what you want to create, how much space you have and your budget! If you think you will want to do a lot of pattern work, I would suggest a 4 or 8-shaft. But the rigid heddle loom will be quicker to learn. It's up to you!

Congratulations on 100 episodes! A question about the fishing line . . . Does it act like a floating selvedge or is it actually a part of your warp/are you replacing a warp thread with the fishing line?
@ActonCreative

Thanks, Dawn! I would recommend using the fishing line like a floating selvedge. Once you're finished, you want to pull it out!

You dont mention the lifting of the shaft sequence, 3 then 1,2 4 etc.
@ActonCreative
@ActonCreative Год назад
Hi Judith! The treadling will vary, depending on how you set up your loom. For instance, I assigned shafts 1&3 to the top layer, and shafts 2&4 to the bottom. So when weaving the top, I either have shaft 1 or shaft 3 lifted. To get to the bottom layer, I lifted the entire top layer out of the way. In addition, I then lifted either shaft 2 or 4. I hope that helps! Let me know if you have follow up questions!
@clarissasullivan8942

To create the fold are you always lifting all but one or half? If I am using a 4 shaft pattern on an 8 shaft loom. Lift 7 for the fold or 6? Not sure if I am being confusing. I can clarify if need be
@ActonCreative
@ActonCreative 3 месяца назад
Hi Clarissa! With a 4-shaft loom, I can dedicate 2 shafts per layer of fabric. So when I come around the fold to weave the bottom layer, I lift the 2 shafts for the top, plus one of the layers for the bottom. Because you have more shafts, you have more choices. So your pattern will dictate how many shafts are lifted when you create the fold and weave the bottom layer. Imagine you are weaving a 1/3 twill for both layers. To get to the bottom layer, you need to lift all 4 shafts dedicated to the top layer. Then, you only need 1 of your bottom shafts to lift to create that particular twill. Does that help or make it more confusing?

If you had an 8 frame loom, would it be possible to triple weave, using an S pattern instead of a C pattern?

Hi! I'm guessing you could do triple layers with an 8-shaft, although I've never tried it myself!
@zoemax63

so is the loom threaded differently than if you were just weaving one layer? do you thread two ends in each dent?
@ActonCreative
@ActonCreative 2 месяца назад
Good question! Yes! You thread the loom for 2 layers. Depending on your reed & your yarn, you could easily have multiple yarns in each dent.

I have a question about double width weaving. I finally got my first double warp on the loom and it honestly feels like absolute magic. I am however having a bit of trouble getting the bottom layer to stay aligned with the top one. One aspect is that my reed beats at an angle, so that even when I’m weaving the bottom layer I’m also pushing on the top one. Another is what happens when I advance the fabric. This seems to pull on the top layer more than the bottom. I think I remember reading that you can stitch the two layers together with long stitches that you remove afterwards. The fold, which is what I was initially worried about, looks nice and even though ❤️
@ActonCreative
@ActonCreative Год назад
Hi Tenna! Great question! When I've done this type of project in the past, I noticed the slight unevenness of the 2 layers. So, I know what you mean! I think what's tricky here is the fact that it will come off the loom and relax, helping with some of the discrepancies. I wouldn't recommend anything drastic, especially because it's meant to be one cohesive piece. Sadly, I don't have any tricks for you, just a recommendation to be as consistent as you can. Ultimately, the yarns will shift around a bit when it's off the loom, and even more if/when you give it a wash. If you find an effective suggestion, please let me know! I love hearing about helpful tips! Thank you so much!
@tennarhiger532
@tennarhiger532 Год назад
@@ActonCreative thank you so much for the swift reply ❤️ I think I’ll give the long stitches a go, and give the bottom layer a slight push with the shuttle when I’m on the lower level 😉 I think, me using a slightly thicker yarn (used for furniture fabric usually) is making the discrepancy slightly bigger than if I’d used a slimmer smoother yarn. But it’s still magical

I listened to someone who did this as a tube and she said have odd number of warps. Can you tell us about the warping process and what that was about please?
@ActonCreative
@ActonCreative 2 года назад
Hi Bella! Great question! I'm guessing she said that because of the connection at the sides of the 2 layers. When I've done double weave tubes before, there have been times when the sides looked seamless and other times when it appeared I had 2 warp yarns in the same space - in other words, the weft floated over 2, instead of 1 warp yarn. Now, I'll be honest. I haven't played with double weave tubes very much. But, if I were a betting woman, I'd say that there is definitely a trick in planning the warp! An odd number makes sense to me! If you give it a try, will you let me know how it goes? I would love to hear your feedback!
