Professor, I have taken up your voicing exercises and I can't thank you enough for them! I have reached up to the 6th partial overtone on Bb-Db and it's all thanks to you. I wanted to ask if you could PLEASE make a video on exercises that help with the smoothness of tonguing/articulation. That is to say, the attractiveness of legato tonguing, the speed and coordination between tongue and fingers, how to correctly staccato tongue, and any other exercises that overall can be used to help improve the tongue positioning for not just voicing a put articulation as well. Please and thank you in advance

I am going back to working on articulation rudiments. I'm an advanced jazz player but articulation is something I have badly overlooked. Doing the double tonguing clean and fast will take me some time as I'm just starting out seriously working on it. I've been working on speeding up my singly tonguing for a couple of months now and I've made amazing progress with that. Doing the double tonguing BACKWARDS with a goo-doo-goo-doo pattern never even occurred to me! Like I can't really do that at all. It boggles my mind and will work on that also. Thank you Robert.

It’s something like whip-cracking; when we flick the whip in forward, then in backward motion, we hear two cracks, although just one of them is from the forward motion. Similarly with double-tonguing; the forward stroke releases the air via the tongue tip at the reed tip. But the backstroke does not hit the reed with the tongue tip; the tongue is retreated back, and then it releases the air pressure from the throat. This backstroke is always softer.

Hello, the tongue does not hit the reed twice. The technique that you are referring to is a separate technique. In my video, the tongue only hits the read on every other stroke....

Awesome video! Thanks for the tips, Dr. Young! Do you have any tips for double tonging in the upper register? I tend to start scooping the rebound once I reach high B.
@robertyoungsax
@robertyoungsax 7 лет назад
Thanks, Mark! Im glad it was helpful! Absolutely, I am planning to make a Part 2 of this video this week. Double tonguing in the upper register is quite problematic for a lot of people. If your rebound stroke is too far forward in your mouth then you will scoop a lot. Try moving your rebound further back in your mouth once you get up there. Try puffing your cheeks out while you double tongue...you may notice that you can immediately double tongue much higher on the instrument. This is because when you puff your cheeks your rebound stroke is not striking in the same spot as if you were not puffing. If puffing works for you, then the trick is to try to create that same motion when you are not puffing your cheeks out. Let me know if this helps!

Thanks for the awesome video! Totally unrelated to the content, but I was wondering what kind of harness that is? Do you find it really helps with the weight of your sax? I have problems with stress on my neck, and as a performance student on saxophone I'm really trying to find a way to relieve some of the neck stress. I've tried the Jazzlab saxholder, which I love for tenor or bari, but I don't care for it on Alto (my major instrument). Any advice would be appreciated!

Hey, even though I have been playing the saxophone for about 9 years, I have never really learned to double tongue. If I really start practicing, starting with the syllables (which goo is harder to say than I thought!),do you know how long will it be until I have the technique somewhat solid?
@robertyoungsax
@robertyoungsax 7 лет назад
It all depends. I think the best answer I can give is to try to designate some time for double tongue practice everyday. If you are consistent with practicing it you will get it in no time!

I love at the end how you phrased having to learn double-tonguing, making it seem like a virtuous goal. Moreover, I'm wanting to learn this to help get into collage band having zero musical knowledge to make me seem more, I don't know, attractive as a member. Yeah, insecurity it be a thing. Anyway, the song I'm going to learn is Trumbology by Frank Trumbauer. The sheet music didn't seem that devilish, but the details might be in the tongue.

Hi Dr. Young, I have a huge tongue and always thought that it impedes my progress in tonguing and double tonguing since my tonguing is slow and is almost impossible to improve. I have asked some of my teachers and gotten mixed answers. What do you think? Does the size of your tongue affect the speed of tonguing or am I just naturally slow? If it does hinders my progress, what suggestions do you have to help overcome it?

Hi, Whenever I do the 'googoo' on the saxophone, my tongue doesn't actually touch the reed. Am I doing it wrong?
@robertyoungsax
@robertyoungsax 6 лет назад
Hi, it actually should not touch the reed. "goo" is your backstroke. It should not touch your reed - it should touch the top of your mouth.

Hello. Thank you for your comment. Unless you are unable to say goo, the middle of your tongue should be making contact with the top of your mouth to get the "G" sound. This is what I am referring to as the "backstroke". Hope this makes sense!

How are you biting your tongue? The second attack has the part of the tongue behind the tip rising to the spot in the mouth cavity where the soft palate rises up from the hard portion (behind the upper teeth). Try saying the word ‘gullah’ with your lips almost sealed; the tongue almost closes off the entire cavity. When the tongue moves down the air is released for the 2nd attack.
