I've watched a ton of his videos. 3 years ago, i bit the bullet and built 2 4'x4' cabinets using his activated carbon technology. I found a video of one of his customers showing the building process of a cabinet they made, and found a seller on ebay that sells carbon pellets in bullk for air purifiers. Cost me about $500 for 250lb of carbon. I was amazed by the low frequency control... my room is 11x12 with 8 ft ceilings, so its far from perfect, but those cabinets did a crazy amount in a small space. Like, they work down to around 40hz, which is totally fine for me, considering room size. I don't know if his services are worth it for most people, but trying some of his technology in my space made a drastic difference.

Did you compare Acoustic Fields carbon to the air purifier carbon?
@thesamplejunkie4225
@thesamplejunkie4225 7 месяцев назад
@dougb5028 I did not. There used to be a link to order carbon from acoustic fields, but it was not there ar the time I made my panels. I think the main point of the concept is the surface area of carbon pellets themselves, so I took a chance and bought some good quality pellets. I was happy with the results.

Nice topic!!! Dennis is the ultimate Guru of sound physics! I've been watching his channel for years and love his techniques. Unfortunately, His technology is far beyond most of our scope. However, that particular video made me rethink my personal space. My room is down to the stud and I will probably be trying a budget friendly sandwich 😅 Regardless, I appreciate both of your knowledge within this crazy vibration transmission space.

It’s confusing on the internet. I recommend reading published books as much as possible. Try to get a varied view of acoustics and don’t stick too much to any one persons views.

@@soundproofyourstudio I'm building a vocal booth for a podcast I'm working on and am hoping it will work if I try to transition to voice work. I listened to the sample voiceover booths he has on his site, and I am not super impressed (they were submitted by the clients). I assume since they're on his site that he approves of them. They just don't sound great to me...especially considering what they must have cost.

Is it useless to build a double wall if I only have one door (attached to the inner wall) ? This is for a bedroom (with TV occasionally playing pretty loud)
@soundproofyourstudio
@soundproofyourstudio 6 месяцев назад
You will need to soundproof the door too. A double door will be better or a roughly 300 lb single door

@@soundproofyourstudio double door for bedroom will be a no-go with the missus. I know it's not possible to know exactly but looking to understand if I'm wasting my time with a double stud wall with a simple solid core door or solid wood door (that I will sound proof as much as I can)

Any difference between using wood studs VS steel studs?

Not that I know of but a good question.

Gotta think wood stud work is more dense / more absorbant
@Architectureguy
@Architectureguy 2 месяца назад
@@soundproofyourstudio I think this is in Rod Gervais' book...maybe I saw it somewhere else. Steel studs offer a little more sound control because you can put more STC material in the space. I'm not sure if it's a huge difference.

Hey I'm building a drum studio in a detached garage with a window. I'm using a double wall system with a 5 inch air gap. I don't want to include the window in the system but I don't want to tear them out either. What do you recommend I do before building my second wall in front of them? Should I seal them with MLV, put insulation on them.. or put dry wall in front? Thank you..
@soundproofyourstudio
@soundproofyourstudio 7 месяцев назад
You need to fill them with as much mass as the outside wall would have had there not been a window. Make sure it is air tight too.
@paulk9534

Im just making a cinema room now, I thought we had it nailed when you taught the double drywall technique….. did you now just imply it doesn’t really work for those low bass movie sounds? 😮
@kinguin7
@kinguin7 7 месяцев назад
It's less effective for lower frequencies than it is for high frequencies. It's not as if it won't block it at all, though.
@soundproofyourstudio
@soundproofyourstudio 7 месяцев назад
It does, just need more mass. 3 four layers of drywall, concrete wall double wall or two brick walls. The double wall is not the problem it is a mass issue.
@paulk9534
@paulk9534 7 месяцев назад
@@soundproofyourstudio isn’t that just ‘getting silly’ though 😳… Im sure a concrete bunker is quite effective but making walls four layers deep and filling with sand is going to be more effective than two layers of drywall. My understanding was that you’d got a great result using two layers and appropriate gap as shown when you built your studio… certainly I didn’t hear noise on your RU-vid video tour, did that turn out not to be the case? There is a limit to reasonableness when dealing with a home build listening room or studio.

Just vacuum the air out from between the walls, no more spring. Thermos studio, good for temperature insulation too! 🤣

This was really entertaining, and I think you hit the nail on the head: budget makes a lot of decisions for us, and the double wall technique works enough for most of us. I’m almost done building a studio in my basement and I’m getting more than enough isolation for my needs. I can use my guitar amp at 70-75dB when the family is sleeping and no one hears me. I haven’t even sealed off the studio doors yet, or installed the flooring! (Concrete slab for now) Like you said, it’s all the little details like HVAC and air sealing that makes the difference. I’m excited to see how much isolation I’ll get when the doors are fully sealed and the flooring is installed with insulated subfloor.

So I caught this video just as I'm starting my drum room build. I'm a loud drummer, I need all the soundproofing I can get. So I called Acoustic Fields and Dennis answered the phone. Ha! We chatted. He's awesome. He guaranties 90 STC on frequencies from 40hz to all of it. He gave me a quick ball park price at around $20,000 for my 12x12 x 8' room in a detached garage.. This is using his design and me building it DIY. He said the wall thickness would be the same as my "room with in a room" design with better outcomes. Actually he said my design will fail.. I'm building a completely decoupled wall and ceiling system at 11 inches thick for about $6-7k. But IDK? I'm gonna cross my fingers and go with my design. we'll see. If I had the budget I'd go with Dennis.

Be very careful with Dennis. After posting this vid two people came out and told me he stole thousands of dollars from them and never delivered. He spent 7 years in Maricopa county prison for fraud from 2000-2007. Do a lot of background research. In my opinion something is very off.
