The cheapest way to double the size of your home is to vigorously de-clutter the place! Just imagine how much most people spend just to have enough space to store their junk they hardly ever use!

I've mentioned this on other episodes: Don't ever think of your house as your "forever home" because life happens. It's a lot less traumatic to move on if you think of your home as your "house." I had a really hard time leaving my first "forever home" because my emotions were so wrapped up in it. I still felt homesick even after building and moving into another very beautiful custom home 25 miles away. I would still drive back to my old neighborhood to look at my first "forever home." I made sure I thought of this second home as a "house' or a very nice rental. After four years there we sold it a few months ago and have moved into a smaller, older and less expensive house. I've had zero upset over the move. I no longer pine over my first house. It's finally in the past. Thank goodness. Now I'm having fun refreshing the interior of our "new" old house. You'll just save yourself a lot of heartache if you don't tie up all of your emotions within the four walls of a house.

Please get rid of all your junk before deciding to add on to your house!. The couple with one baby had a three bedroom house to start with. Why was his desk/office in the kitchen and not in one of the bedrooms? Even if they had another kid, the had enough bedrooms. The could use another bathroom but the rest probably not.
@happydays1336

I've been thinking a little bit along your lines, but it's more about what the interior looks like at present. If I knew my home was going to be on television with 10s of thousands of viewers I'd make sure my house was very tidy and clean. The IVF homeowner has messes in her rooms. Some people on other shows are messy, too. You'll see the same messes in houses that are listed for sale. Maybe this is tidy and clean for them and it was a lot worse before the house was filmed.

✨💖✨I love what these two young families have done to keep/make their houses their dream homes. I wish them many happy years. One thought I have. Swapping the front “grownup space” with the play space was genius on several levels. It is a cozy space, secure and more easily baby proofed. Later, play dates in there while parents have coffee at the bar. And as the twixt and tween and teen years come barreling along, a “private” yet safe place (read supervised) space kids crave. But at the very gut level, I’m a practical person. All those beautiful double windows and doors with all that beautiful gleaming glass will have fewer little hand prints, nose prints, lick marks expressing whatever artistic mood happens upon babies and doggos alike. (Written with love by the mom who was thankful for every little finger and nose print. But I was also the one who cleaned them. lol)

It's not just about the cosy toes. It's cheaper to heat, as it runs on lower temperature, hence more environmentally friendly. No need for radiators taking up wall space. Heat spreads evenly throughout and there is less chance of condensation on windows increasing humidity, because there is no convection/ air circulation heating you get with radiators.

They should have built the ecological heating system along with better insulation, that would be a good investment into the future of the kids. In the long run you safe a lot of money for gas or oil. If it would have been my house I would have safed on furniture and other things, maybe postponed one of the bathrooms, and then this would have fit in the budget. As an architect I can say that this is a classical case on not doing the planning in the right order. You should get your priorities straight and know the cost of it before you even think of starting the building process. If the budget is too small for what you want, then you can simply reduce the project, until it fits. And yes, the cost of an architect might be worth it.
