Near the beginning of the video when talking about virtual ram and how it acts as slow ram there are 2 things i would say, 1. i do not recommend letting the system manage virtual ram automatically. If you look into the default details this will only allow a maximum of about 300mb of virtual ram which is way too small. I recommend manually setting your virtual ram, in the setting you choose the minimum and maximum set your minimum AND maximum both to EXACTLY the same size as your total physical ram. Do this once on each physical drive you have. This will give you the most bang for your buck on virtual ram and it helps. The more physical drives you have in with those settings the faster your virtual ram will work since each drive has its own independent speed and it can store half of something on 1 and the other half of something on the other to cut load time in half or more depending on the number of physical drives. 2. Also an important detail about the speed of virtual ram is the hard drive speed is the virtual ram speed so the faster your hard drives can read and right the faster the virtual ram will be. Reason for this: If the virtual ram min-max is set to a variable amount, it starts at the min and expands to the max if needed and each time it expands that requires CPU use so it can drop frame rates in a game for example, so by setting the min and the max to the same number you get a lot less kicks to the CPU since the system will never have to allot more virtual ram on the fly. Also having the amount set to the same as your physical ram gives your system somewhere to dump the ram if an error occurred and that dump can handle the entire load without a blue screen so it can make your system more stable having enough virtual ram to eat all the data in your entire physical ram no matter how much it has. If you do this on a normal hard drive that isn't SSD i recommend optimising/defraging the disc after you set the virtual ram and restart the computer so it can be as fast as possible. All in all hes right though there is no better solution than to just simply replace/add more ram chips.

This was a bit of a walk down memory lane. I remember the ram doubler software but back then it was very flakey. The Apple 2 software relied heavily on paging which made their software more powerful and robust. The question comes down to this, how much memory do you need? I agree with Linus, just buy more.

I find it incredibly ironic that my system crashed while watching this video and the cause turned out to be a bad DIMM I just bought off eBay.

For the longest time I thought increasing RAM would greatly increase the speed of my CPU's processes. Glad I replaced the hard disk with an SSD first. I did buy more RAM after the SSD installation in my 6 year old laptop, but the doubling of 8GB to 16GB didn't really make a noticeable difference. Unfortunately my computer is really only bottle necked by my NVIDIA 635M 2GB GPU. Nothing I can really feasibly do anything about as far as I know.

I actually recommend using SSD as RAM. I have a laptop with 8GB and a 1TB HDD, and since I don't have many files I have a smaller SSD but 64GB of RAM. I promise you, it works (but it does depend on how fast your SSD is)

PRO TIP: i managed to find 4 gigabytes of ram in a public dump once, i brought it back at my place, shoved it in my computer and... it worked! if you absolutely need some more ram be shure to check out these kind of places. One day i even found a gtx 970 in a trashed computer! people don't understand that when a computer is broken, it's often just one part that you have to replace... (just be discreet or ask nicely if you can take a piece, sometimes you end up with a nice member of the staff who lets you leave with the booty)

When he said DDR5 in the coming years and i said there already is DDR5 until I saw this video was made 2 years ago- Edit: DDR5 will be released in 2021, and was introduced to the world in July of 2020.

Oh god, looking at this video back. I used to have a crappy acer laptop that only had 4gb of ram and low power i3, I was getting into pc gaming at that time because all the youtubers are playing gmod and tf2. I actually downloaded a pirated copy of gmod which ran horribly on my laptop, it always crashed and the laptop will die because of it always thermal throttling, and the fact that my specs were very bad i couldnt run it over 10 fps. As a kid i searched for ways to improve my laptop performance and found that thiojoe video on how to double ram, I followed the steps and it did nothing, I cried and forgot about it. Then I started to play on my dads computer which was significantly better than the crappy laptop. Took like a year or so to realize my dumbass was scammed by this dude with his "double your ram" video, anyways i got a gaming laptop since and I love pc gaming. Looking back, that crappy laptop was the first spark that led me to pc gaming i guess, maybe it was crappy, but it was good in another way which led to this awesome experience. anyways, if you read through all of that thank you and i hope you have a good day

It's always best to pay the extra for reliable RAM, and make sure you get TWICE AS MUCH as you think you need, because you WILL NEED that later on. Another top tech tip, is to buy ram in pairs, then sell the ram as a pair when upgrading (there's a highly technical reason why RAM that has been working together in a pair, works better than two sticks of the same make and size that aren't. It's similar to the mystifying non logic of charging routines for Lithium Ion Exchange batteries). So, in short, the best way to save money when doubling your RAM is to either sell it to get money to add to your fund for your RAM upgrade, or buy TWICE as much as you think you need in the first place. ....because you WILL be glad you did.
