DoubleMint House is a meticulously crafted renovation and two-story rear addition to an Edwardian-style semi-detached home located in Toronto. The project beautifully merges contemporary design with the classic charm of the original structure, creating a cohesive and inviting space for a growing family. The primary goal of the renovation was to add an extra bedroom for twin brothers and create a flexible dining area that could serve multiple purposes, from hosting family dinners to providing a space for games, schoolwork, and other activities. One of the standout features of the renovation is the transformation of the third floor, where a new rooftop deck extends from the primary bedroom. This outdoor space not only compensates for the lost green space at ground level but also serves as a peaceful retreat for the family, perfect for relaxing with a book, sipping coffee, or enjoying evening conversations. The design also incorporates a double-height volume in the twin bedrooms, enhancing the sense of space and light while maintaining privacy for both the family and their neighbors.Inside, the ground floor was extended to align with the neighboring dwelling, creating a seamless flow between the old and new parts of the house. The existing kitchen now opens up to a spacious dining and living area, framed by custom millwork and wood paneling. A long millwork piece on one side of the room serves as both a display for books and vinyl records and hidden storage for dining wares. The warm tones of white oak contrast with sleek blackened steel elements, which form a niche for a wood-burning stove and shelves for firewood, adding a touch of industrial elegance to the space. The use of large windows and sliding glass doors invites natural light deep into the home, while the thoughtful placement of mirrors and glass elements creates interesting reflections that enhance the sense of openness. Upstairs, the design continues to explore the relationship between old and new, with a small open area aligned with an existing skylight, allowing light to filter down into the lower floors.Throughout the house, the design strikes a careful balance between functionality and aesthetics. The new additions and renovations are neatly dovetailed with the original structure, creating a sense of continuity while introducing fresh, modern touches. Millwork, wood paneling, and carefully chosen materials connect the different spaces, offering a warm, cohesive atmosphere. DoubleMint House is a testament to the power of thoughtful design, blending old and new to create a home that is both timeless and perfectly suited to the needs of a modern family.
