Here he is again, that ol' good-for-nothin' Joe Bonamassa taking the time out of his day to share his knowledge and wisdom. One of the most maligned guitarists in the business, and one of, if not the most generous musicians I've ever seen. I've learned so much from the guy from his instruction, and been inspired by his incredible playing. From one nutcase recluse nerd to another...thank you, sir.

I remember seeing Joe as a chubby 12 yr old on 60 mins or some show like that, the day it was aired. I recorded it on VHS. As the yrs went by one of my best friends in high school, Andy Hall, who plays w the Stringdusters now and is arguably the best dobro player on earth, watched the video w me. Like me, he was blown away too. Andy and I jammed a bunch over the yrs, but I remember his first week at Berklee and saying that Joe B was in his class and way an asshole. Then Andy and I lost touch for about a decade. I moved to NYC doing session work and he moved to Nashville. Then we caught up at one of his shows and he told me how cool Joe ended up being. Spoke nothing but praise. I said, "what happened, thought you hated the guy haha?" I think I was just a young jealous kid," Andy said. *Mind you, Andy was a fucking shredding demon and could play any style. He learned cliffs of Dover by ear in a matter of a few hrs -- he had nothing to be jealous of in terms of talent comparison. My story doesn't really have any substance, just that my friend said Joe was one of the nicest guys he knew in the biz and it was not an act. Joe genuinly loves teaching and spreading his knowledge, as you said. I just thought I'd back up your point w the opinion of a Grammy award winning dobro God. 😉

My only citique of Joe is that he more or less turned his back on his hometown and the people who helped him find his tone and gear. The stories I could tell... If you know Utica, you'd think I was Joey Diaz talking about Joe's old man and his old producer.

This is why Joe is legend. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the amount of amazing guitarists out there, there are so many... but I only need my right index finger to count the amount of them that would sit in with a pair of guys that have less than 20k subscribers on RU-vid, in their house, and chat like buddies on camera. Let's be clear, this was done for two reasons: 1. Because Joe loves talking about guitars, and 2. for the benefit of Doug and Pat. That's selfless class, Joe. Good on ya. Congrats on a great episode, Doug and Pat!

The last time I was home I ran out of time and did get over to see his dad's store, maybe next time. In fact, I never even made it to Big Apple Music. I'm always waiting for Joe to say this is how I do it. I have a few guitars, and amp and a volume pedal, simple and sweet. Life's journey has taken me to some wonderful places. Unlike Joe, I don't have 10,000 hours. I'm glad you made this video and I love to hear Joe talk about tone. However, I'll stick with my 10`s on the Les Paul. I was there at the Ryman show in Nashville when Jack Pearson showed up with a Squire and came out and played a few at the end of Joe's set. You know that stupid, happy grin we all get when Joe rips out one of his impromptu masterpieces? Well, Joe had that same look on his face when Jack Pearson came out and played! We all did. One of the best shows I've had the privilege of seeing at the "Church" in downtown Nashville. Jack did this weird "rolling note sustain" trick that floored me. I'll never forget it. Nice that he took the time to appear on your show. What's sort of unique about Joe is that for all of his expensive gear, he is no gear snob. He definitely doesn't come across like one. He just happens to have access to the older guitars -- and the fact that he plays them instead of just hanging them up on some wall or locked up in some vault is very cool.

WE talked the owner of the festival which was success full and still happens every year into booking him against his better judgement because he was and still does stick to very traditional stuff and standard artists that pretty much just do the blues festival circuit all year round. Joe was very young and it was likely his first solo band a few years after the Bloodline thing. He didn't know it but we were fans then. lol what a nice guy. He was very polite.

I love how Joe describes making your situation useful no matter what you have or play. I like how he described less distortion and more pick attack and using the amp and guitar instead of pedals...Neil Giraldo comes to mind for having a hot sound without distortion.... but then Gary Moore used his 80s metal tones in his rendition of blues.... it is all subjective and in your own hands period.... I can make a Squier sound amazing too.... it is all your individual perspective on what you are trying to get on that day or minute when it feels right to you.

I am not a huge fan of Joe's music but do like his music and have a huge amount of respect for him and I could listen to him talk guitars and tone for hours. I like listening to him talk gear and tone more then listening to his music . Again I like his music but it's more of a passing interest. But he can play insanely well and I do enjoy Listening to him jam by himself

Hilarious intro. Joe's knowledge and sincerity as a collector and musical almanac is evident in his love of the narrative and story of the gear, be it guitar, amp etc. great pis ode.

Wonderful video. Love the discussion about vibrato. As one who plays both fiddle and guitar, one of the reasons you can vibrato a on a violin is because you can sustain a note with the bow for a long time. Likewise, with the advent of electric guitars and more powerful amps, suddenly an instrument that was barely audible in a jazz orchestra becomes loud enough...and notes can be sustained. And naturally with the ability to sustain notes, suddenly vibrato technique becomes more important......hence the evolution in blues and rock. Just my thoughts on the subject.

A lot of the blues style vibrato comes from slide players back in the late 20's and 30's and you're right, amplification gave us that sustain and "bloom" to the vibrato- ed notes which became a staple of rock guitar and we're happy about that. D&P

i'm a pedal guy. i grew up on nirvana, siamese dream, dinosaur jr, etc... i love fuzz and stacking pedals and it is *completely* true about focusing on technique on the guitar itself. billy corgan, kevin shields, thurston, J, robert quine -- these guys are *phenomenal* guitarists and have unique ways of controlling the instrument that is in some ways pedal-driven, but in other ways really is not at all pedal-driven. it'll always be fun for me to end up in outer space with pedal button pushing. (but there is even *technique* there. learning how pedals work and why.) there really is just no replacing sitting down w/ an un-pedaled guitar & un-amped guitar, and just getting to know the guitar as what it is. editing: i also love the little post-script you guys put in there. really fantastic interview & discussion/s.

@@DFraserHomes I somewhat disagree. The guitars (histories) from 13 on up seem to have the right carve finally. With that said. They were hand made guitars and no 2 old ones are exactly alike.

Super cool! To Joe - I tried to do this thing with 10's on an SG tuned down 1/2 step plus drop D and I'm like "this doesn't work at all". Rather than putting different gauge strings on the guitar, I tried a dunlop .60 nylon pick (think fender thin that doesn't fall apart)... it worked! I then found I really liked the sound of that pick, even with heavier strings. Now a fender medium feels like a fender extra heavy to me. Something to think about as you get older. Thank you for doing this, you taught a lot in a really short amount of time.

Happy holidays guys ! Too bad Joe puts his hands on all vintage guitars during his safaris :-))) wouldn't have the means anyway ! BUT: I recently acquired an R9 from the same guy that sold Greeny to Kirk Hammett and I have to say - although I did not play Joe's guitars - this one is absolutely a treat !! CustomBuckers, neck profile, weight, signal chain through caps & pots as close to historic as can be, even the smell: everything feels and sounds like the real deal ! Plugged into a Vox I get all the tones I need just fumbling through the Vol & Tone pots... Just LOVE IT ! Have a good 2019 and keep those episodes coming ! Cheers :)

One can pick up a 1971 or 1972 Gibson Les Paul for $7,000- or less and 3 or 4 years, that guitar will be 50 years old and considered an antique.

Ben Hackett True that but I have a 72 Goldtop Les Paul Deluxe that I’ve had since High School. I can tell you it is a an extremely usable instrument. The minis have a sound all their own and to my ears, they just sing. They take overdrive and growl with the best of them. Just like Townsend played a Deluxe and Hendrix played a CBS Era Strat, didn’t seem to hurt their sound much. By the way, I do have a 67 Strat and t’s fantastic. If you ever played it, I promise there would be no complaints. I’m sure there were quality issues with both CBS and Norlin era guitars but I guess I got good ones. Fender especially used parts across multiple years. You could have 64 pickups, a 65 body and a 66 neck.
