The first place I ever fished was off his dock on Lake Keystone. His wife Linnie made me doughballs to catch bluegills. He gave me my first baitcaster and taught me how to cast it when I was 12. I still have it, a Shakespeare PresidentIal II. He had a bricked in pool in his yard and he kept several huge bass in there. They'd come out of that dark water and snatch a shiner from your fingers. It would scare the hell out of me. I was saddened to learn of their passing. They were great people. A legendary angler his wife was an amazing artist. It was great growing up in Florida in the 70s and 80s. Always a big deal to visit the Hannon's for the afternoon!
Thank you for sharing that memory! I grew up in FL and this is the first I ever heard of Doug Hannon, I tried looking him up online but there’s nothing on him even wiki doesn’t have a bio, I really wanna learn more about him
Dude's catching monster bass in an aluminum jonboat with a depth finder that would probably cost $49.99 today and probably a 35# thrust trollin motor.......meanwhile you got dudes buying $80,000 bass boats and $50 dollar lures.
Damn Yankees they're hundred-thousand-dollar boats with two three types of sonar power poles and GPS guided trolling motors still fishing right up next to somebody else Wade fishing or in a kayak instead of going to find new spot with all that technology
@@walden6272 I don't quite understand it, because in some regards with certain species like Crappie, we've done a great job in conservation. In some places, guys are catching more quality fish and the population of said fish than ever, despite more pressure and the quality just keeps going up, but you take large mouths and certain other fish and they are just not there in the numbers, despite stocking, strict creels etc. You can catch 1-2 pound bass sometimes seemingly at will, but the larger fish seem to be so elusive that you could conclude they simply are not there in numbers conducive to catching them. The largest bass I have caught since 2015 was 6 pounds. I was so protective of that fish I hurried up and put it in the livewell with G Juice until I was convinced that it was ok to go back in the water. We used to catch those all the time when I was a kid and the creel was much less strict, but a fish like that is now more valuable to the spawn than ten times that number in smaller fish.
I started seriously bass fishing in the mid 80’s at the age of 20, this man’s articles and videos were a major source of knowledge to us for many years. He pioneered many products that are still widely used today like the weed less prop with Motor Guide. He will always be held high and sadly missed by countless anglers 🎣🇺🇸
I have been reading and studying bass for a very long time. If you really are serious about learning about bass you must read Doug Hannon’s books. He is a biologist and a fisher man. Who has a love for bass fishing. He takes it to whole nother level. Love this channel. But it makes me want to go fishing!!!!!
Yep.......ole Doug Hannon was one of the greatest teachers for catching giant bass. I've watched & read just about everything he ever put out. R.I.P. Doug Hannon........."the Bass Professor".
Thanks for posting this. These videos were made on Rainbow Springs and the Rainbow River in Dunellen Florida. I remember watching him film some of his videos and catching bass that we could both see and they would ignore me. A wonderful man with a passion for nature and bass fishing. RIP buddy.
I met Doug who was in the audience at a Bass conference held at SeaWorld in Orlando. Nicest guy in the world. Super intelligent. He died way too young.
My name is Thad Lacinak and I worked at SeaWorld in the Animal training Department. I put together the SeaWorld fishing expos for several years. I got to meet and fish with Doug. I agree he was one of the nicest and most intelligent people I have ever met. He truly was the Bass Professor.
@@thadlacinak3775 I remember you, dude! You were in Bass Master Magazine (back when it was 'B.A.S.S.'s Master Magazine, before it became 'Bassmaster' magazine. I distinctly remember that your had in you hand a Lew Childre and Sons BB-1NG reel; the grandfather of all modern reels. That impressed me. I had an original 'Shimano/Lews' Bantam 10X SG; the reel that Lew developed with Shimano.
I still use mono for certain application. Knots tie down better and it's got good stretch. Today's mono is pretty good. Overall though, I use braid with FC 100 leader which is a fluro-mono mix and it works perfect.
The effort they put into keeping the fish healthy and lively from the time they get them into the boat to the time they are released is amazing. It should really open our eyes on how we should be taking care of out modern day fisheries. Maybe then we'd wouldn't have such a hard time when it comes to landing a monster bass!
This is so amazing. Tips that are still useful today, old smith wick rogues and the way he breaks down the fish behavior in water color that people simply don’t look at anymore.
I sat next to Doug at a bass fishing symposium put on years ago at SeaWorld. He was incredibly nice. I remember seeing this video years ago and people were complaining he was using electronics to catch these lunker bass. This is like the naysayers today complain about FFS. Anglers need to learn the technology or get out of the way. Rick Clunn says FFS is " beautiful" and he is actively learning it.
Fishing is still great. I am 55 and have been fishing for literally 50 years. I am still out there at least three times a week catching fish. Same as I did in 1971.
I don't even fish much but I dig hanging out as you fish .!!!it's quite peaceful ...Thank you Not that the original fisherman will get this :) Is that an eyeglass case in your pocket or full of lures? ..out of curiosity
My dad recently passed away. Last weekend I had a yard sale to get rid of some of his possessions. In a storage room I found 4 huge boxes full of VHS tapes. Many had never even been opened. I figured someone would take them for free. Not one single person was interested in them. VHS was going out when I was a young child so I don’t have any super fond VHS memories... except for one Winnie the Pooh tape that I watched religiously when I was very young. 😂 sadly I can’t find that VHS anywhere around the house. But... if you know anybody that needs some VHS tapes... I got all you need! 😂
@@5PercentTint hey bud. Sorry I ended up taking all the VHS tapes to the landfill. I even advertised them for free online and couldn’t even give them away. Ran out of time and had to get rid of them. Sorry 😞
They say, "old school," but what is old works exactly in 2021 fishing, it may be new to some, but it is the same basic principles of catching fish. Professional fishermen know and apply these techniques to catch fish, salt or fresh water. I pay attention to these principles because they are effective. Doug Hannon is a great teacher on catching fish.
He "was" a great teacher. Doug passed away at least several years ago, I believe from cancer. I agree with your comment though. I fish for trophy bass as often as possible here in east/central Florida........since 1969.
He was obviously a great influencer too, as I bought and still buy Quantum reels and Rapala Silver minnows. I also had one of them camo hats to try and be like him.lol.one of my idols.
Good, clean and wholesome. A video I can watch with my 12 year old baby girl. Not one cus word. Taking my little girl fishing this memorial weekend. 💪🏾
One of my fondest childhood memories is Doug Hannon on TNN. Whenever they had that block of 3-4 fishing shows, they’d play those short “bass professor” video presentations and it was always *ridiculously* informative. This was in the 90s when information was a lot more scarce and any little tip you could get was gold...Doug Hannon was always my “shut up, shut up! I gotta hear what this guy is saying...”
I still have my snake bait kit. The only thing I don't care much for, is the thin wire hook used with the kit. ( switching to a heavier gauge hook doesn't allow the snake bait to float as well ) An extremely large or powerful bass can straighten that hook right out. I know, because it's happened to me a few times with thin wire hooks. Even in 5/0 and 6/0 sizes. Notice how all quality grass & swimming jigs now come with extra heavy duty hooks.
@Dan Reid, Jelly Worm in Blackberry, Grape, Blueberry, and Strawberry- scented, too! Mann's Augertail was one of my favorites; a Motoroil one caught my 1st 5lb spotted bass, 6/22/87.
A remarkable bass angler. Had a talent for being able to find double digit largemouth bass & actually land them. Huge loss to us all who looked up to him for what he was...... The Bass Master. RIP sir. Blessed to meet you in 87. I'll remember the conversation always
I watched this as a kid, and have a VHS copy still. As an adult I used to talk to Doug over e-mail. He was an incredibly kind and knowledgeable person. RIP Doug.
Rip Professor. I can remember seeing VHS tapes of him and soaking up all the info I could on the tapes he had put in the early 80’s. I watched them so many times I stretched out the tape 😆 I still to this day remember most of those techniques.

As both a kid who fished and played video games, I got into bass fishing by happenstance, playing Bassin's Black Bass for SNES. I thought to myself, "This is fun. I wonder what it's like actually fishing for bass? All these cool lures and all the technical stuff trying to trick these predatory fish." I checked this video out from the local library. I watched it endlessly for the week I had it, then checked it out again for several weeks thereafter. I was obsessed, and since then, have spent countless hours on the water, trying to live up to the expectations I developed through watching Doug. I doubt I'll ever get there. What a legend.
@@bruliet ... have to disagree , using your analogy then there are two groups of people , the nobodies who don't care and the somebodies who do care ... I care so I'm a somebody , you don't care so you're a nobody then ... of course this only pertains to those who enjoy fishing , in other topics you might be a somebody and I may be a nobody , lol ...
Caught my pb largie yesterday. I uploaded a quick clip of it on my channel. I dream of being a RU-vid fisherman someday. Would be amazing Making a living off Something I love to do more than anything.
It was bed fishermen in the 80's that caused the decline in big FL bass. They used to actually install scopes in the bottom of their boats to see the beds better to take large females. I've seen boats with holes cut in them, a magnifying lens glassed in the hole, then a sun shroud around it that looked like a traffic cone. The days of constant 10lbers ended almost overnight. 😢
Wonder what they'd think to know that we're still mainly using graphite and fiberglass rods, just way cheaper now. Graphene rods are probably the future though, we'll see.
I wonder what Doug would think about the chatterbait it goes against his philosophy of attraction and triggering the jackhammer is the most rude obnoxious loud water moving bait out there, bass fricking love to hate it, I wonder what Doug would think? I know that he would love that trd ned rig, interesting how this game evolves, I wonder what he would think of live sonar, would he think it is catching the last frontier in bass angling the suspended bass, definitely the kast frontier in bass angling
