UPDATE: March 2019
"How to Make Money Shooting Stock Footage" • TRAILER for WORKSHOP: ...
I've just completed a new 5-hour Master Class workshop that teaches how to make money shooting stock footage. If that is a topic that interests you, please check it out.
Note: My 4.5 hour Z150 training video is now available for on-demand streaming at Vimeo.
vimeo.com/179567188
Sony’s PXW-Z150 and HXR-NX100 camcorders bring high-quality performance, adaptability, and ease of use to a compact, handheld body. Suitable for corporate video, documentaries, news, reality TV, government & military, schools, and houses of worship; the two cameras feature large 1”-type sensors, a Sony G lens with individual rings for focus, iris, and zoom, a 12x optical zoom range, 24x Clear Image Zoom, XAVC codecs, and much more. And the Z150 offers UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution, XDCAM recording formats, and amazing 120 fps continuous slow-motion shooting in full HD.
But, like all professional cameras at this level, the Z150 and NX100 are extremely complex and have a steep learning curve if you hope to take advantage of all the great features they offer. And that’s why Vortex Media produced this Master Class --to help Z150/NX100 owner-operators get started off on the right foot. This 4.5-hour training video series is simply the most thorough and efficient way to learn both the fundamentals and the advanced features of these great little camcorders.
Doug Jensen, a director of photography with over two dozen Sony camcorder training videos and books to his credit, leads you through all the major features and functions of Z150/NX100. Not only does Doug tell you "what" a feature does, he also explains "why", "when", and "how" to use it. This is as close to a one-on-one training session with Doug Jensen as you can get without actually hiring him yourself for personal instruction. In no time at all he’ll have you up to speed on all of your camera’s most important features and functions -- plus Doug shares his favorite custom settings, picture profiles, best practices, and dozens of tips and tricks.
In the no-nonsense style for which Doug Jensen is known, he cuts through the clutter of confusing, misunderstood, and undocumented features. He demystifies the camera and explains each of its functions while providing practical, step-by-step instructions for how to use them. His suggestions and advanced techniques will improve the quality of your footage, streamline your workflow, and make you more productive.
Topics include: Getting Started, Understanding the Menu System, choosing the right Recording Format, Paint Menus, Picture Profiles, Setting Exposure, White Balance, Markers, Memory Cards, Clear Image Zoom, Digital Extender, Nightshot, Zebra, Peaking, Video Monitoring & Output, Slow-Motion, Assign Buttons, Audio Recording, Camera Profiles, Audio recording, Timecode, Time-lapse, Wi-Fi Control, Playback Operation, Ingesting & Archiving, the basics of Catalyst Browse, and much more.
This master class is a completely independent production with no sponsorship, input, or approval from Sony. It delivers unbiased information and professional advice that can’t be found from any other source.

Very well done and informative video. I had ben considering a Z150, looked at others from Sony, JVC and Panasonic but kept coming back to the Z150 for my needs. This video made the choice easy. Mu Z150 arrived last week. Very happy with it, have used nothing but Sony in the past, PD150, Z5u, PMW200, the Z150 is another welcome family member.

Hi Doug, Thanks for your review of the Sony Z150 and NX100. As always, a masterful review. I wonder if you have ever done a training video on the Sony NX5R. If you have, I have not been able to locate it. Would you mind doing a comparison review between the Sony NX5R, the Sony Z150, and the Sony Z90V. I am particularly interested in knowing how each camera performs in picture quality… particularly in low light. Also in knowing how the NX5R does with its 3 1/2.8 sensor chips compared with the 1” chips on the Z150, and the Z90. The NX5R does have the advantage of having a 20X zoom, as opposed to a 12X zoom, but perhaps the other two cameras have better picture quality so that it would be more advantageous to get one of them. It seems to me that the NX5R and Z150, would have the advantage over the Z90, with dedicated rings for aperture, focus, and zoom, but on the other hand, if you don’t use manual aperture, focus or zoom, perhaps that doesn’t matter as much. Perhaps the auto focus on the Z90 is so good, that you don’t need manual focus. I wonder what the other differences are between the Z150 and the Z90. Do they both record to the same codex(es), and record at the same bit rates, or does one have an advantage over the other. Would you recommend the Z150 over the Z90? I believe that the Z150, costs about US$500.00 more than the Z90. What benefits do you get for that extra $500.00? Thanks very much for your help with this! Steve L.

Last night I purchased (rented on Vimeo) and watched all of the videos from this tutorial. I do not have either of the two cameras. Because of budget limitations (SSI Disability), my experience has been mostly with consumer video cameras. My goal is to understand more about professional video cameras and use that information to help me with the not so professional video cameras. The closest video camera I have to being pro is the Sony CX-900. It is the only video camera I have that allows full control of manual exposure. Without going into a lot of details, from a pro video camera point of view I can see a lot of his points. From my years of experience with the Consumer/Prosumer cameras I have used, I would have to break a number of the rules he mentioned to work with the limitations I have had to put up with. I feel that a lot of his advice is more for guidance not as an absolute. The most important thing I have learned from 25 years of experience is one must know their video cameras to get the most from them. Especially before one does an important shoot! I have done mostly Church videos where I did not have control of the lighting and sound. And the Churches I have done videos at are NOT setup for video. Sadly, they are not even setup for worship. Too much vanity is the shameful goal instead of worship! So, even if one only has a consumer/Prosumer video camera, I would highly recommend watching and learning from these videos. I use most of my spare time learning new things. I wish I could afford the Sony PXW-Z150!

Doug, I recently purchased a HXR-NX100 Sony HD Camera and have used it to film 3 ice hockey games this past weekend, and I do play by play through a lav mic which I plugged into a VXLR+ which I purchased seperately. I pulled the 64gb memory card out to view and hear my voice...the picture was very impressive, but my audio was very faint. It upset me at first, but I then turned my attention to focusing on the problem. Before the games even started, I made sure there is a new battery in the mic...secondly, I made sure the power switch was in the On position, and then we did a mic check by me speaking into the mic and the cameraman was watching the audio bars on the screen display and they were moving so we thought we were good to go. I now think that the bars were moving on his screen because as I was talking during the mic check, the sound was being picked up by the mic on the front of the camera, causing those sound bars on his screen to move? I also believe that had he had headphones on (which I have yet to purchase) he would have known right there and then that something was amiss. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike.
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 5 лет назад
Mike, I believe that you have already figured out the problem on your own. I agree that you were probably recording the internal mic. BTW it is inconceivable to me that anyone would attempt to record important audio without using headphones. You get a big slap on the wrist for that one! :-) Get some headphones and also setup the audio configuration and check everything out before you even leave for the arena. Good luck next time.

Thank you for all of the time you put into this, Doug! If I will be mainly shooting in 1080, are there any advantages to getting the PXW-Z150 instead of the HXR-NX100. The main focus will be live production recording in a concert type atmosphere with medium light.
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 7 лет назад
You think you don't need 4K now, but what about tomorrow? Buy for the future. In fact I almost never shoot HD anymore. Almost anything worth shooting is worth shooting in 4K even if you only deliver the video in HD right now. Plus, the Z150 is simply a better camera than the NX100. The viewfinder alone is worth the extra cost, but you also get 120 fps slow motion, a better sensor, SDI output, more assign buttons, a better XAVC codec, XDCAM codecs, and the list goes on. Bottom line -- get a Z150.
@shanearmand7572
@shanearmand7572 7 лет назад
Doug while filming can you go straight in to slow motion while recording, or must you stop recording and then press the slow motion button and start recording again?
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 7 лет назад
Shane, no you can't do that. In fact, none of Sony's cameras allow you to change the frame rate while the camera is recording.

Thank you Doug for a thorough and great presentation. I have been looking at the z150 for a while now, but really couldn't find adequate specs on this unit until I came across your tutorial. I do have one question in regards to the z150. Is it possible to hook up a wireless video transmitter on the z150 to transmit to a wireless receiver hooked up to a monitor (flat screen)? Thanks for your help!
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia Год назад
Hi Doug, I'm glad you liked my video. Thanks. I don't really have any experience with or insight into wireless transmitters. I know there are quite a few options out there but I have never needed any of them. I would assume that any transmitter that takes and HDMI or SDI input would work just fine with the Z150.

I'm glad that you liked the video. Whenever I talk about NLE compatibility it is always with the assumption that someone is using the latest version of their NLE. And as far as I know, footage from the Z150 is indeed 100% compatible with the latest version of all the major NLEs. But I have no way of testing (nor any interest in testing) footage to see if it is compatible with older, outdated software. There are many, many great reasons for a professional to upgrade to Premiere CS besides just file compatibility.

Hi Doug. I have an FS5 (and bought your masterclass). I'm looking to get a second camera and was considering the z150. Besides depth of field differences, how well would you say it would match with the FS5 for interviews / event sort of work? It's the same codec from what I understand and footage online looks very similar. Have you used the footage from both these cameras in the same project at all?
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 7 лет назад
No, I haven't used the cameras side-by-side and I honestly don't have a feel for how well they would match up. The fact that they have the same codec means nothing because the codec doesn't have much to do with the look of the camera unless you push it to extremes. Outdoors or in high-contrast situations I don't think the Z150 could compete with the FS5, but indoors, under controlled lighting, and if the composition of the shots were different enough you might get away with it. But it depends how picky you are. The best advice I could give you is to rent a Z150 for a day and come to your own conclusions. Obviously your best bet is to get another FS5. Think of how much time you'll save matching cameras. Plus when you go to sell the camera someday, it will be worth more than the Z150 so the actual cost of ownership difference is less than you think.
@mattjeh
@mattjeh 7 лет назад
Thank you for your reply Doug. I can't afford to stretch to another FS5, but renting for sure makes sense to try my own testing.

Hi Neil, yes as you suggest, S&Q Motion is the method you need to use for shooting time-lapse video because the camera doesn't have an interval record mode. Unfortunately, the Z150 cannot use S&Q Motion in 4K so you'll have to shoot in HD. In my opinion, this one of the main advantages the Z90 offers over the Z150.

Doug, I recently found your RU-vid and Vimeo channels and immediately started watching your intro’s to a few of the masterclasses you offer to the Z90 and also the Z150, and a few others. I have to first say, that these are without a doubt some of the very best tutorials on any cameras I have ever seen, and I’ve seen many, having just come back from Venice Italy on a workshop with Scott Kelby and Mimo Medany, two of the best instructors for photography I’ve ever had the privilege of working with. I have a couple of questions, which I would appreciate getting your input on: 1. Does the Z150 offer the same focusing system (the new Sony “hybrid” system offered on the new Z90) that seems to offer a better focus system? Since it is older than the Z90, I’m not sure it would...2. Do you offer - an instructional course on the AX100 camera, or any of the still shot Sony cameras, such as the A9 or the new Sony A7Riii, and if not are there any plans to offer them in the future? Thank you so much...my direct email is: paindoctor@mac.com - - and would greatly appreciate your response sent to that email directly as well. Again - these are absolutely fantastic courses, very well written and organized and I would buy them in a heartbeat if they were offered for my Sony A9, or A7Riii if they existed. I look forward to your replies.

Thank you very much for the compliments, you have put me in good company with Scott Kelby. 1) No the Z150 does not offer Fast Hybrid Auto Focusing and it never will since it would require a hardware change in addition to just a firmware update. 2) No, I don't have any training for the AX100, A9, A7R, etc. and probably never will. The AX100 is too much of a consumer-oriented camera and the "A" cameras are not camcorders. I have no interest in trying to shoot professional video with a DSLR or mirrorless camera, nor do I want to try to teach other people how to do something I wouldn't want to do. I am a camcorder guy. Period. :-)

may i bother you with one more question then is the Z90 and the HXR-NX80 the same except for the SDI port ? thank you
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 6 лет назад
No, there are more differences than that between the Z90 and NX80. For example, only the Z90 can shoot XAVC-L (10-bit 4:2:2 in HD). My 5-hour Sony Z90 / NX80/ AX700 training video will be released next week and it begins with an explanation of the differences and similarities among all three cameras.

Hi Doug, very nice presentation! I would like to know what size your StormJacket is for the 150? I'm not sure wich one would be better, the Medium or Large ? Thank you, cheers from Luxembourg ;)

Hey Doug love your videos and Masterclasses. I video mainly lectures and events with a couple of EX1Rs and am looking to upgrade sometime in the summer. Would it be worth it to wait and see if Sony comes out with another comparable camera or to go ahead and buy a couple Z150s to replace our current cameras?
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 6 лет назад
I think the Z150 makes an excellent upgrade from an EX1R. Is there a better camera coming down the road? Absoultely, because there always is a better camera coming down the road. But even if Sony announced a new camera today it would be months before it would be available, so my advice is to buy what you need when you need it and not worry too much about what is around the corner.

Nice presentation. I've had the Z150 for about 6 months and I love it. I had the NX5U for years before that. That is a great shooter's camera. Even though I've had the Z150 for awhile, I'm thinking of treating myself to your full course. There's just a lot about the Z150 that I'd like to hear your take on. But there are two things I wonder if you discuss in later chapters ... two things I find really inconvenient. First ... if I'm not mistaken, you cannot turn on the D Ext while the camera is recording like you could with the NX5U, the V1, and even going back into the Sony DV cameras. Even if you have assigned the D Ext to a button, you have to stop recording, hit the button, and turn the recording back on. If you're shooting news or a scene you have no control over, you don't know you need the D Ext until you've hit the end of your zoom. I had a real situation where I zoomed into a small fishing boat struggling on the reef. I zoomed in all the way (with Clear Image)... needed more. I had to shut the recording off to turn on the D Ext, making a jump cut. With prior cameras, I could hit the button and just jump to it ... sort of like dropping in the extender lever on a BetaCam lens. Strange Sony changed this. Second ... I guess this was spelled out in the manual but I didn't really grasp it until I needed it. I have a Lilliput monitor connected via HDMI. If I'm shooting HD, no problem. In 4K, however, there is a strange limitation. When you're NOT actually recording, you see the image in the external monitor. But the moment you hit Record, the screen goes blank. This was a shocker when it first happened. It's been explained to me that in 4K, the camera only has 2 image streams. Maybe there is some menu work-around for this, but I haven't found it yet. All in all, a very nice camera at a very nice price. I'll check out the rest of your course.
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 7 лет назад
Hello. Yes I discuss both of these topics during the master class training video and you a correct on both accounts. You can't turn on/off the Digital Extender while the camera is recording, and you cannot use the viewfinder and an external monitor at the same time while the camera is recording in 4K. In standby it is okay, but once you hit the record button you're going to lose one or the other. However, as I show during the class, you have the option of giving priority to the viewfinder or the HDMI output.

Doug, great program, thanks. I like the HXR-NX100. However, Sony is releasing the 2 new 4K models in December - HXRNX80, ($2300), and the PXWZ90V, ($2800). I'm really torn between these 2 families. Could you compare these as well? Thanks!

Hi Steve. I am currently working on a five-hour Master Class training video series that will cover the PXW-Z90, HVR-NX80, and FDR-AX700. It should be released in January for streaming on Vimeo. In the mean time, here is some demo footage I have shot with the Z90. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7Bk2JkNdbUM.html

@DougJensenVortexMedia

Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video. The Sachtler FSB-6 system that I have cost around $1600 a couple of years ago. It is well worth the money and will last me for a decade or more for my smaller cameras. Cameras come and go, but tripods should last you for years and years so it's worth getting a good one.

What is the life expectancy of the Z150? If I buy it in 2017, and purchase your course, how long do you anticipate the technology will be relevant or updates available for it?
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 7 лет назад
If I had to take a guess, I'd say that that the Z150 is a camera that could be earning money for an owner for at least the next 3-4 years. And if someone hasn't made back their $3100 investment in just the first few weeks or couple of months they are either a hobbyist or don't know much about running a profitable video business.
@CTSCAPER
@CTSCAPER 7 лет назад
Thanks Doug. I fall into the hobbyist category. After using a high end Handycam the last few years and becoming intimately familiar with Premiere the features of the z150 are hard to resist.. The Pxw-70 caught my eye for less but the Z150 is the whole package (4k) without getting super high end stuff. I look forward to watching the rest of the course.

Dear Doug, one question, as per your lessons, can we find any similarities in Panasonic hc x1 with this z 150? I mean money wise cheap, colour quality ( without any post production colour management)? May be I am wrong? Thanks.

Hi Joy, unfortunately I have no experience with the Panasonic camera. Keep in mind that tjhe service I provide is very in-depth training (4-6 hours) for specific Sony camcorders. I do not do product reviews or product comparison videos, there are plenty of other people who are do that already.

I'm not an expert on live streaming (in fact I am the complete opposite of an expert in that area), but the Z90 and NX80 are a couple of very good cameras that cost less than the Z150.

Hello, may I ask you about camera Sony HXR NX100 system recording? Can it switch between PAL and NTSC? Like 1080 50i and 1080 60i....Thank you so much!
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 7 лет назад
The Z150 can shoot PAL or NTSC but not the NX100. An NX100 is either built for PAL or NTSC at the factory and that mode cannot be switched later by the user. Get a Z150!

Excellent presentation. I am very interested in the rest of it! How do I use the Z150 to record continuously, (not switching to next card, but making one long AVCHD file), instead of starting new clip every time I push record. (So that as long as the camera is on, it records up to the file size limit, then starts a new clip...no matter how often I push Rec button) JVC Cams can do this, but I can not find the way to choose this option in the menus ANYWHERE. Thanks!
@DougJensenVortexMedia
@DougJensenVortexMedia 6 лет назад
The feature you want is called "Continous Record" and the Z150 does not have it. I think the last Sony camcorder to have that feature was the PDW-F800 about eight years ago.
@SantaAnaUnifiedSchoolDistrict

It is not that difficult to merge the clips on the Premiere timeline, but it still make sense that sometimes one wants to have a long clip (like for musical events that need to synch up...etc. Thank you!!
