The first piece of chamber music I've ever had performed, Shattered Structure is a post-minimalist work for vibraphone, glockenspiel, triangles, cymbals, cello, and bass. It was written at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute for Triplepoint Trio and New Morse Code, and premiered at the University of Kansas on November 19, 2017.

Last year, New Morse Code approached my trio (Triplepoint) to see if we would be interested in collaborating with them as composers. New Morse Code is a cello/percussion duo that loves to work with composers to create new music, and have worked with many composers that I have the utmost respect for. Needless to say, we were flattered when they reached out to us, and enthusiastically agreed to work with them. We spent about two weeks together at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute, where Jonny, Sam, and myself went into full-fledged composer mode and started writing. It was a really valuable learning experience for us, and we were able to come up with a few works for them--either for just their duo, or the five of us together.
Shattered Structure is, for all intents and purposes, the first piece of chamber music I've ever had performed. The instrumentation of our combined ensembles tends to lend itself well to big, bass-heavy sounds, so I wanted to write something that would focus more on the higher-end of the timbrel spectrum. I've also always been a fan of minimalism and the composers influenced by that movement--with respect to this piece, David Lang and Arvo Pärt were major influences.
