Privilege was brought home to me some years ago seeing 2 (of the many military amputees from afghan) in hospital. Both were early 20s, both white, and Both had lost their legs. One was from a reasonably wealthy background with a messed up family life who joined up to get away from all that. The other was a poor bloke from a shitty estate in Middlesbrough who joined up to get away from the circle of shit he found there. Both came back from there in the state they did. The wealthy chap was surrounded by his bickering awful family who literally argued over his bed about how they would spend his compensation money. He despaired because he was going back to that life. The poor bloke was also surrounded by his family who were supportive and understanding however he also understood that he had lost his chance to get away from that life he knew in Middlesbrough. Which had the privilege there? Who can even measure it. The people that spout about privilege need to grow up.

A coworker was very jealous of me because of my looks. She is Caucasian and is very intelligent and had a very ideal upbringing but she isn’t very attractive and can’t control her weight. I’m Mexican and suffered from unbearable abuse in my childhood and had to struggle for every ounce of self-worth I have. I was envious of her. I felt her happiness was handed to her on a silver platter - she never had to fight for her sanity! Well one day she shared that her husband had an affair and now has twins with his mistress while I am happily married to an honest, dedicated man. How can we judge each other just by skin color when life is so complicating and difficult for EVERYONE.

The Privilege Game is essentially unwinnable because no person can really know another’s pain in all its ramifications and permutations, just as none can know another’s joy or other emotions fully either. So then we are reduced to what can descend into a sort of silly or doctrinaire oneupmanship. In fact, we now see that this is what has happened, and is continuing to happen in increasingly alarming ways.
@Corz0
@Corz0 3 года назад

@uptoncriddington6939
@uptoncriddington6939 3 года назад
The other problem inherent to this Privilege Game is that even if one could theoretically depose people from their privileged places in society, one would either reduce everything to the lowest common denominator, or one would, perforce, create new classes of privileged people who had been under privileged before. They would, by definition, then become the privileged and would presumably have to be dethroned as well unless one simply wanted to set up a reverse hierarchy. The trouble then would be that people would grow dissatisfied with the new inequality within society. This gets back to one of the problems with egalitarianism brought up by Tocqueville: under revolutionary democracy, as in France, which he was surveying, the principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity, are not all of equal appeal. Humanity may love them all to some degree, but what they really hate is inequality. Demagogues see this and call for equality at all costs. This kills first liberty and then fraternity because it can only be achieved by the imposition of equality from on high by a relentless oversight of society by a busybody bureaucratic tyranny in which nobody can be free and resentment and suspicion are rife leading to the death of any fellow feeling. This then creates a situation where the vast majority are reduced to radical competing individuals fighting to make sure no one gets ahead or is even free to attempt to do so. This then leads to the control of the masses by a state which proclaims equality to be its highest goal in which all but the controlling elite are reduced to slavish adherence to the requirements of equalisation whatever they may be. History shows us time and again that this leads to monstrous regimes in which, to borrow an image, the boot of unrelenting tyranny is stamping on a human head forever. This is the outcome of the Privilege Game taken to its logical conclusion. It is a dead end which must be avoided at all costs for the sake of the wellbeing of humanity.

@@uptoncriddington6939 You say that deposing people from their privilege reduces everything to the LCD. If people of lesser ability rise too far above their capabilities, they drag down the morale of the whole society. Deposing them raises standards in public life. The lack of social mobility, for the more able, also holds back economic growth. I would argue that sometimes, if the right people are deposed from their privilege, higher standards can be achieved.

It isnt privilege. Its progress. Some families have more evolved structures than do others. The relationship between parents and children has an impact on how much the child's innate capabilities are expressed. Some parents have more issues when it comes to family dynamics. Those problems have a negative affect on the performance of their children which in turn has an effect on literacy and graduation rates, which in turn has an effect on employment opportunities. Which then leads to underachievement.

Having lost his mother so terribly young has left a humility in him and I don't think he ever asked for sympathy. I know too many people don't care what the Bible says, but it say, a man should leave his father and mother and be with his wife. His mother has already left him so he left his grandmother. I'd argue that playing this "evaluating the validity of Privilege" game is already a loss. It concedes that the concept has value, and turns the discussion to the details. Rather, let's attack the validity of ANY concept that confers a benefit on ANYONE for being LESS good at something. Let's think that through... The concept of Privilege is a penalty for success, and since everything is comparative, it is also a boost for failure. ...it grants advantage to failure... That's bad. In fact, that is as bad an idea as any that has ever existed. It is not hyperbole to say that it is an existential failure. If we confer benefits to failure, we produce more failure and less success, which does LITERALLY jeopardize out long term existence.

A person's birthright is not the results of chance, it is the results of CAUSALITY not privilege. You exist as you are as a direct result of the countless choices your ancestors made, therefore you justly deserve your birthright. That being your innate talents, your personal achievements and your family inheritance. A poor person in another country could have been born here in the United States, had their parents moved here before they had a child. Take that back as many generations as you like. It still holds true. Recipients of affirmative are not entitled to the benefits they receive. The outcomes do not reflect the decisions made by their ancestors.

The first incredibly fraught problem with the discussion of "privilege" is that they are using this word, which carries all sorts of implications, namely that those things being called "privileges" are arbitrary and explicitly provided perquisites established by some institution (which could be anything from a government from to a private club). And that word, much like many of the words that the wokists twist to their ends, carries some moral implications, but also more crucially that everyone who is so "privileged" benefits from said "privilege". And that's just wrong at the start, because most of the things they are talking about (with the notable exception of wealth) are usually inherent and immutable characteristics that in some situations, historically, have statistically implied some kind of advantage. Most of the things also suffer from apex fallacy. Maybe the elites of some society have xyz characteristics, and are doing pretty well for themselves. Maybe the majority of people in that society have xyz. There are also some people in the society who are abc, who aren't doing so well. So statistically, you're more likely to be doing well if you're xyz than abc, but the situation on the ground could still be that the vast majority of xyz are just as bad off as abc, because these letters aren't the ruling feature. The ruling feature is usually wealth, just btw. This is a huge problem with this "privilege" model without even getting into particulars. When you get into particulars, the "privileges" are generally just various kinds of advantages, which are always going to be distributed unevenly and willy nilly through any society, because most of them are either biological (smarter, stronger, etc.) or situational (good parents, well connected) and aren't generally correlated with what the woke call "privilege".

It’s sad that just because someone is rich or famous or beautiful that them losing a loved one is for some reason no longer sad because they have “privilege”. And don’t get me wrong they do have privilege but I put air quotes around it because I feel like they’ve changed what privilege means. Privilege means that you have advantages in things that others may not but that doesn’t make you any less of a person or make things any less sad.

Somewhere there's a book that gives us the roadmap to see and be happy with our own level of privilege or in spite of the lack thereof. It's celebrated and decoded regularly in many, increasingly under-visited, venues, all of which are open to every one of us. The stability of our very society depends on our thirst for its knowledge, passed down to successive generations. The insanity around us resides in the place beyond the tipping point, where the measure of that collective knowledge has shifted into negative territory. That book may be gathering dust on some shelf in your own abode.

Lacking humility enough to accept that they can't win in the short term, they play a game of comparative grief, sacrificing their chances at succeeding later, in the long term. I didn't do that. I let others have their rightful glory while I scavenged in solitude for knowledge and advantage. Eventually, I earned privilege. I won't stand for people that can't accept humility because they won't stand for anything when they get privilege.

Privilege is the result of making good decisions for oneself or others making them on your behalf. Misery is earned the same way. It’s simply reaping what you sow

Not only do people not know how to prioritise different kinds of privilege from their own perspective, it changes from person to person, making it completely subjective too. Ironically, the same people who complain the most about hierarchy are the ones also attempting to build one, albeit a much, much poorer version.

Mr Murray, it's simple you look at how the sun reflects off the person's skin and that tells you how privileged they are. It's very scientific and relieves people without the ability to think but with big Twitter accounts from being found out.

What I like to do is go into the hospital burn unit and talk to straight white males with 3rd degree burns and try to get them to acknowledge their cis straight white male privilege. That's preposterous of course since I, like 99,94% of the population, have non-burn victim privilege. But somehow that does not stop high income people from hectoring low income people about their privileges.

Whether or not anything serves as a privilege depends almost entirely on the environment in which any particular trait finds itself. For instance, France during The Revolution was not a great environment in which to be a royal. Even Sam Walton died of Cancer.💯

I don't agree with DM on many levels and I feel he is much more right wing than I like, but he seems a sensible chap and I would happily enjoy a meal and a nice glass of wine with him. His views on privelege are quite understandable, and, I would say, even agreeable. 😎 If most right wing people were more like him, the world would probably be a slightly better place.

We're told some people are "under privileged",and some other people are "privileged",so what's the word for all of us in the middle,the majority of people who are just ok,getting by,not having much but enough,there is no word. Where I live I'm often in propinquity to Muslim ladies,at the bus stop,on the bus,in the shops. Now I'm the white lady so I'm the "privileged" one ok,so how come they all got top of the range mobile phones while I got a 20 year old simple black Nokia,but that's from my choice but I'm just saying. Anyway due to work needs I'm getting a smartphone soon so I'll be joining them. I held off as long as possible. I hate being sucked into The System. I spent most of my life keeping outside it. As an Unattractive Female I have an inbuilt tendency to think Beautiful People have it made,but I do know that's not true, but I always resent THEM having problems,how dare they,they should try being me for a bit! Harry is a GINGER! And he's the spitting image of his Dad,he looks nothing like the Prince of Wales. Lol,ha ha!

Since there is no objective truth, who is anyone else to judge another's oppression level? What you think is a relatively low level of oppression might be higher to the person experiencing it. You might consider Harry's privilege diminished by the death of his mother. But he might say that her death was more devastating than you thought. So the privilege of being born into royalty pales in comparison. That's his truth. You can't argue that a person's truth is invalid.

I have to admit I get shitty with people who moan about being broke when they have have enough to see them through the next year without any worries. People would slag me off for whinging about being broke when I have a roof over my head and an internet connection. So it goes right down the line. There's always someone worse off etc. i think it comes down to choice. If you choose to be a loser then you deserve nothing. So if you work hard do you then deserve good-things? I don't know. Does it really come down to whether you're a good person, and who gets to judge that? It's a right fucking mess. Just be decent, that way when you do get crushed by society at least you'll be justified in feeling good about yourself..

Thanks to DM and FP. Interesting. The Windsors and their spawn should really keep to their core business and try to stay as far out of the limelight as possible; it will not end well for them. The Rich are particularly assumed to be 'privileged', and yet what does that even mean. I don't dislike them because of it; the reaction is more along the lines of 'good for you', except in those cases where revelations show that they cheated their wealth out of less fortunate people, in which case it turn to anger. On the other side, who's to really know if those revelations are real or fake news published by their competitors? Irrespective of the source of their wealth, it leads me, at least, to take their advice on life with more than a grain of salt. If they have mental and health problems, then they can at least afford the best that money can buy and don't need our sympathy.

True, if you're being earnest and honest about the privilege-calculus it is an impossible task, but they are not interested in that. Such calculus is only good to them insofar as it serves its function as a tool to redistribute power according to their aims. They need no complete reduction scheme, but only the parameters that achieve their aim. They will pick the parameters.
