Douglaston Salmon Run, NY And The Hardest Fighting Fish I've Ever Hooked on a fly

Made our first ever trip to the Douglaston Salmon Run (DSR) section of the Salmon River in Pulaski, New York. There were good numbers of Chinook and Coho salmon in the river, and despite a good number of hook ups, it was quite a challenge to land a few. These were easily the hardest fighting fish I've ever hooked on a fly rod. Kept one for eating. Olive colored woolly buggers and egg sucking leeches were my hot patterns. Will definitely be going back here in the future.

Awesome! Those fish definitely put up one hell of a fight. Great job!

It was the first video where i can see the hookup process nice and clear and uncut, great video thanks.

Oh it's real simple. Just keep your line tight, feel the bottom, if your line stops or jumps, set the hook. Remember, hook sets are free. Glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching!

Great looking fish! I love when the salmon run. It is absolutely insane how many massive fish go flying past. It is also crazy how many people are fishing alongside you. That combat fishing is the only thing I don't enjoy... but I do miss it being down in Florida. Great video. Will be watching for more. Gave you a sub!

Thank you for watching and the sub! Although, in the DSR, people were more than helpful, and the guys across from us where I caught the first fish in the video actually invited us to cross and fish the same pod of fish they were over.

@@JohnPascavageFishing That is really cool! Usually fishermen are not that friendly about sharing their spots.

You are a braver man than I. Although DSR seems a lot less hectic than the public places up there. Hope to run into you guys in Erie again in a few weeks.

The DSR is a lot less hectic, and the people there are very helpful polite, definitely worth it in my opinion. And we booked an AirBNB for a small fraction of the cost of a lot of hotel rooms up there, which was even nicer, so the cost of the trip was still low. Hope to run into to you in Erie as well, Tom. Probably going to try it myself next weekend, unfortunately I've heard the run is behind schedule due to hot weather and little rain.

@@JohnPascavageFishing Well I bit the bullet and did it. Local fly shop is hosting a trip... 4 days, 3 nights... staying in some house (maybe AirBnB). Was amazed how fast the DSR passes went. Was lucky to snag mine. Sold out in the first few hours for those days. I noticed you were using your normal steelhead rod. Any modifications other than upping the leader size? I'm taking my old reliable 7 WT and I'm building a new 8 WT to take as well.

@@reelguysfishing Sounds good, I used my 8 wt rod with no issues, probably a bit underpowered for some of the fish, but with decent fighting technique did ok. I would also use a bit more weight than I did, unlike the Erie tribs, these fish seemed to be right on the bottom. Some guys were actually using a three way swivel with their leaders and tippet tied and almost a drop shot weight clipped on, and others even were using a slinky style weight and doing well, although it's debatable whether they were just lifting fish.

@@JohnPascavageFishing Thanks.... The shop organizing the trip does this a lot so I'm expecting they will have a lot of what's needed with them. Will be a little different than fishing the Niagara for them. Will be fun no matter what.

Can you explain you're leader setup please ?
@JohnPascavageFishing
@JohnPascavageFishing 4 года назад
Yes, I used a 1x fluorocarbon leader, 12 feet long, and a swivel with my sinkers above it, tied to 1 or 2x tippet under that. On the DSR, you have to have a swivel, knot, or break in the line with any added weight above it.
@aaberetta33
@aaberetta33 5 лет назад
you need heavier rod ! I use ten weight and don't chase !
@JohnPascavageFishing
@JohnPascavageFishing 5 лет назад
Yea, I probably should get something heavier in the future, just hard to justify buying another rod for one trip.

Nice job bud. May have trade venison for salmon if you kept any. My mom loves salmon

Thank you, unfortunately did keep one but already either ate or gave it all away. Definitely need to do this again.

Is it hard to secure an opening in the DSR , we briefly looked into it , just wondering if u could tell me the best process thanks!
@JohnPascavageFishing
@JohnPascavageFishing 5 лет назад
It depends on the time of year, and days of the week. We got our passes on the DSR website (link in the description), but it appears alot of days for early october are sold out. They sell walk up passes and afternoon only passes on site if you go there and they have them left. Also, would recommend following their Facebook page, they provide fishing reports and updates on pass availability each day.
