My mum would almost certainly have used some of those caves as an air raid shelter during WWII. The open ground you walked over at the start was once (I can just remember it as a kid) slum housing where my mum grew up and the family used the Trevanion Street caves even when they moved a few hundred yards away. She told me about her and her mum holding her nan up between them as they ran back to those caves when the air raid sirens started to sound, and also about one Irish chap who used to put on a really broad accent to help stop the kids from being frightened during the bombing. He was killed by shrapnel while he was by one of the entrances.
