Dover Western Docks station was originally called Dover Marine. It became Western Docks sometime in the 1980's. The station closed to passenger use in the early 1990's.
Brilliant film footage.i spent many many hours there watching the locos shunting away.just wished i had taken more pics, its all gone now.Progress i think its called oh yeah sure more like dame right murder.thanks again for posting anymore of the same ??
I used to be a signalman in that area years ago and it is very sad indeed to see what has happened. The main station area is still there but is a cruise liner terminal now and all the sidings are just car parks.
Only just found this film. What a busy place it was. Now all that busyness has been transferred to the road, with approach roads jammed with trucks. A train could bring in as much as twenty truckloads or more. No logical sense to it. !!
had some of that as a dover fireman, when it all went I was going to be a driver at the priory but the thought of driving electrics for 30 years did not appeal to me, so quit and went to Australia, had a great life for 35 years in oz
man this brings back memories of the motorail service to stirling when i was a lad in the late 70s and early 80 , we would cross the channel on a british rail ferry to boulogne maratime and wait for the auto- couchette to take us to st rasphael . what has happened to this great world we used to live in eh?
The NSE station nameboard was taken at the passenger station but for some reason, I did not photograph the station on that day. I guess I got carried away with the slim jims in the yard. I'll post some footage of the station later that was taken on another day.
@Panarail Oh right. all you get at Dover Priory these days is London Victoria, London Charing Cross or St Pancres International Trains other than ones running though to Ramsgate.
what a lovely video 👍and it's only 30 years ago loads of diesel's and freight now what have we got lorries to glog up our roads instead of it being on rails who ever decided to close Dover western docks wants shooting it's not to late to put it back as it was and remove those lorries have you anymore video's please
@kratos32godofwar There is nothing there but a empty yard with not tracks or anything, its a car park infront of the station building and a criuse terminal is housed in the station.
Can someone advise please.I am sure trains albeit freight ones used to run along the public road between the Eastern and Western Docks many years ago.I am sure I have read about it somewhere accompanied by a photo.
I just looked at the area on Google maps and I was horrified. Everything has gone !!!! No station buildings... NOTHING !!! Look for Lord Walden Square in Dover on Google Maps. I am actually sorry I looked.
And its called progress(not) i can never fathom why the train ferry was scrapped what happens to hazadous loads now,oh yes send them down the tunnel nice move!
